Cleveland Browns (2011 season)

Browns agreed to terms with S Usama Young, formerly of the Saints.

The signing allows the former Kent State star to return home and compete for a starting job with Abram Elam leaving. We suspect hard hitting T.J. Ward will be moving to strong safety with Young battling for the free safety job. The Browns may not be down tinkering in the secondary.

Honestly I wasn't even paying attention to Elam because he coverage skills are that garbage.

I just remembered the Santonio TD against the Jets was on Ward's side of the field :( He was playing FS at the time. I guess I forgot.

That said. Kiwanuka re-signs with the Giants. That's a little dis-heartening.

For a year our front office said they would make a little 'splash' given our cap room... I haven't seen much from it. Landing Edwards would be fantastic right about now.

With Young, I assume that means they are out of the market for Whitner...means DL is now our biggest need.

Dawson to sign franchise tender, report to Browns
of CollegeFootballTalk.com. Taylor reports, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, that Browns kicker Phil Dawson will sign his franchise tender and report to Browns camp on Friday. Dawson, a 12-year veteran and the last member of the original reconstituted Browns, has had periodic issues with his contract over the past few years.
The deal is expected to be in the range of $3.25 million, guaranteed, for one year.

Browns agreed to terms with RB Brandon Jackson on a two-year, $4.5 million contract.

Jackson offers no upside as a ball carrier, so the move is curious. He's a blitz protection specialist with very limited explosiveness with the ball in his hands. Jackson should slot in behind Peyton Hillis and Montario Hardesty as a third-string back.
wtf

Starks blew right by him on the DC after he had a couple of shitty games as a feature afterr Grant got hurt...I dunno, that's an awful lot to pay a guy that will rarely ever see the field. If Hardesty stays healthy (I know big if) then he may never play at all.

On one hand it seems to me like they overpaid. The truth is though, at this stage Cleveland probably has to overpay a bit for any free agent to come and play for a perennially bad team. This transaction certainly doesn't set the world on fire from a talent standpoint, but I like it better than the idea that some others had floated - picking up a rookie UDFA to fill that role.

Remember, because he was injured all year Hardesty is essentially still a rookie. He hasn't played a single down or real NFL football in his life. Is that the guy you want trying to chip James Harrison or Terrell Suggs when McCoy drops back to pass on 3rd down?

brandon jackson is a good blocker and a very good receiver out of the backfield. that's what you want from a 3rd down back. at about $2 million a year, that's a fair price.

^^^this^^^

as a packers fan hes done a great job as a 3rd down back for us.
