Cleveland Browns (2011 season)

The defenses faced by RGIII this year and their Yards per game ranking (stats from USA Today):

32. TCU
Stephen F Austin (1-AA)
111. Rice
74. Kansas St. (Lost)
99. Iowa St.
66. Texas A&M (Lost)
107. Oklahoma St. (Lost)
61. Missouri
120. Kansas
62. Oklahoma
115. Texas Tech
14. Texas

94. Washington

So we have 2 legit defenses (Texas and TCU), a few mediocre defenses and a lot of BAD defenses including a bad 1-AA defense.

Hell against that schedule of defenses even the Walrus would have had Braxton in contention for a Heisman. And notice that Okie State had the 107th "best" defense in the country, yet Baylor with RGIII lost that game pretty convincingly.

numbers is a strawman argument. otherwise, every wr from hawaii and texas tech would be taken in the 1st round. justin blackmon has no business being mentioned with andre johnson, megatron, fitz, aj green, or julio jones. he's nowhere near as physically gifted as those guys. then, there's the whole thing about him having no idea how to run an nfl route tree, which is where the dez bryant comparison falls into place.

Funny, I can't seem to find anyone saying that anywhere in the interwebz. Care to link?

Blackmon not being able run routes? You serious bro? Did you not watch the kid play at all this year? Dude can run, catch, and beat defenses like its his job. And it's for damn sure we need a WR ASAP.

Does anyone have any favorites for rounds 3-7, maybe a sleeper pick you'd like to see the Browns pick up? I honestly think LaMichael James if you can manage to get him in the 3rd or later depending on his combine would give you a great check down and skat back to play with in the WCO. Obviously the need at RB is heavily dependent on how the Hillis situation plays out, but I'd love to see a guy like James come in and contribute as a Lesean McCoy type of player. Obviously small backs like McCoy, Bush, Sproles have a place in the league and that's personally one of my favored pick-ups, although the need to fill more needed spots certainly makes the pick up of him unlikely. Any other names anyone cares to throw out?

now were talking...im sick of talking about our first round pick...championships are built in rounds 3-7...i love LaMicheael james...depending on how he does in the combine i could see him being a late 2nd, early 3rd round pick...browns could use him in a sproles type role if they wanted...dont see james carrying a load as a feature back especially if they are having him run between the tackles unless he bulks the fuck way up...Doug Martin from Boise is another i like around these rounds as well

At WR in rounds 3-7 i like Tommy Streeter from Miami, who had a huge year for Miami last year...he should be in the round 3-4 range especially if he runs a 4.4 40 time standing at 6'4...Jarius Wright from Arkansas and even Posey in rounds 4-5 i like

other names i like in rounds 3-7 randomly: Leonard Johnson, CB (Iowa State), Cam Johnson, DE (Virginia), Shea McClellin, DE (Boise St), Terrell Manning, OLB (NCst), Brandon Mosley, OT (Auburn), Nate Potter, OT (Boise St), Bobby Massie, OT (Mississippi)

it all depends on who your talking to...these guys say he is a good route runner

or that he needs to polish on his route running according to these guys

i believe he is a good route runner...i watched him closely during the stanford game (why not he could be a future brown) and i thought he did very well running routes...some of those post routes were run perfectly and i know one post route to the left end went for a TD

dez bryant also didn't have issues running the routes he knew. the issue is that being in okie state's offense, they didn't know most of the nfl route tree.

So basically you are implying because Dez Bryant didn't do his homework before the combine that means Blackmon is the same guy?

Riiiiigggghhhhhttttt......

it's a product of the offenses they run. dez bryant had the same problem. so did crabtree. marty gilyard from UC only knew how to run 3 different routes in the senior bowl. they all run the same type of spread offense.

i get you're desperate to draft the shiny new toy, but taking a lesser prospect simply due to position is bad draft strategy period. there is no getting around that.

Have you actually said who you favor drafting at #4?

several scenarios:

1. if cleveland is sold on him, take RG3.
2. if not sold on RG3, trade down.
3. if not sold on RG3, or RG3 is off the board, morris caliborne.

look around the nfl. taking wr's in the top 10 is generally bad value unless they are total physical freaks like the AJ, Fitz, or Megatron.

1. Ehh I don't know about that
2. Only if we get some sweet picks in return
3. Who the hell is that?

I was revisiting my thoughts about Crabtree in the 2009 thread and ran across this post.

If the Browns had a defense and were set at QB, I'd be ok with getting Crabtree in the 10-15 range.

IT's a top 5 pick. A WR doesn't touch the ball enough to warrant the pick that high IMO. You need to get an impact player there that either touches the ball every play or almost every play (A QB or RB), a guy who is a stud OL who will anchor your line for the next decade (Joe Thomas), or a pass-rusher who will get 10 sacks a year out of the gates.

Orakpo seems like a good solution although Aaron Curry would be a steal at 5.

I agree with 2009 BM80 (about receivers). I really don't like WR at #4, unless he's a stud like Calvin Johnson.

he meant Morris Claiborne...and i could easily see a scenario where the browns take Claiborne at #4 if RGIII and Blackmon are gone...Heckert loves DB's and the kid is a stud...Haden and Claiborne with Ward as FS....i can deal with that

1. if you don't have a franchise qb and you think a guy is a franchise qb, you take him. that philosophy will never change.
2. if cleveland trades out of #4 so a team can take RG3, they will plunder them.
3. i don't know if you're knocking my typo or are ignorant to who the top draft prospects this year. claiborne is a better prospect than haden was coming out of college.
