Cleveland Browns (2011 season)

AuTX Buckeye;2091413; said:
I hope the brain trust (using the term loosely) in cleveland are just putting this shit out there about trading up to get RGIII so the redskins will give them the farm if he's there at #4

which would be a fine strategy if cleveland was not sold on rg3 at all and wanted to ensure that one of kalil or claiborne would be on the board. they probably wouldn't take kalil, but their phone would be ringing off the hook if he was on the board.

a few exerpts i chose...full interview on the link

Quotes: Randy Lerner Talks Cleveland Browns with WTAM?s Mike Trivisonno

Regarding rumors about Mike Holmgren not being dedicated or ?stealing? the Lerner?s money.
?There?s absolutely no truth to that. Nothing could be further from the truth. Look, in this business it?s unforgiving. People are going to voice their feelings and they?re going to do it on an unfiltered basis. I understand that. It comes with the territory. But, I can say with total personal clarity that Mike Holmgren is as honorable and committed a football leader as I?ve been around. I know he wants this team to do well. I know that he suffers the losses miserably. The impressions that you?ve outlined are just not accurate. They?re nowhere near my personal experience with Mike.?

Let?s say that Mike Holmgren doesn?t get it done, what then?
?I don?t think it?s a ?Mike get it done? equation. You?ve got Tom Heckert in the building. You certainly have coach Shurmur in the building. And there?s a lot of other guys. I would like to think that what we?re trying to do is spread responsibilities across guys with varying degrees of experience and an awful lot of hunger and commitment for the Browns. That?s going to grow and become more intense over time. I think Mike?s role as a mentor is very important almost as much as his role as an architect.?

On needing patience for Mike Holmgren and his staff.
?This is not an industry or business where you?re going to get time. I understand what you?re saying (Triv) and I understand that you?re trying to be sympathetic for what we?re trying to do. I think there are some basic things that have to get done that this organization is very focused on. The most fundamental is settle on a quarterback. Now far be it from me. I?m not a talent evaluator, to say the least, or anything like one. At some point as a Browns fan when you look around and see Pittsburgh needing a quarterback and dealing with Kordell Stewart or dealing with Tommy Maddox or whatever? They made a move. They committed to the move and they?ve succeeded with that move. And Baltimore with Kyle Boller and that didn?t work out. And they tried and made a move and got Flacco. I think one of the things that is crucial right now is to take a significant step forward is to try TRY if you can to get this quarterback situation settled.?
Can that quarterback, from the owner?s perspective, be Colt McCoy?
?(Joking) I suddenly lose the ability to speak when I?m asked that question.?
On longevity in the front office being important to all NFL franchises.
?No question. And a coach if you can. That continuity is without question the ultimate sign of strength within this business. No question.?

sorry - drafting ANOTHER QB is retarded.

Moving up to do the same stupid thing is nearly criminal if this was really that important. It's the Clowns, so it isn't.

The biggest issue is playmakers on both sides of the ball and talented people on the offensive line. I don't give a shit if they had Peyton Manning, this team would be no better than 6-10 or maybe 7-9 on the outside.

Granted defenses would have to account for RGIII, but in the NFL that's not a huge deal when you don't have to worry about literally anyone else on the field.

hate to rain on your parade but i feel its going to happen in the draft next year whether its round 1 or round 7...With McCoy and Seneca Wallace as our QB's i dont see how we do not draft one
QB, in all likelihood will have to be addressed soon. I don't think McCoy is the answer, but it's hard to feel 100% that way when he's played behind a pretty bad OL and has had no weapons to work with. I'd like to see what he can do with a legit #1 receiver and decent running game. Drafting RGIII this year is foolish unless they plan on addressing WR and RB as well. Not to mention the OL.

Drafting a QB in the 1st round with the needs this teams has virtually everywhere else is retarded and exactly what the Browns will do.

No McCoy won't be Joe Montana anytime soon, but no QB yet born would make this group of "playmakers" into anything more an a slightly less horrible version of what it is now. Throwing a rookie who played in a conference that doesn't play any defense whatsoever into the mix and expecting him to be able to contribute immediately/at all seems pretty risky to me given the other options that are bound to be on the table at the #4 pick.

ok so ive heard what u wouldnt do...so what do u suggest the browns do with the #1 pick in this scenario

1. Colts - Luck
2. Rams - Blackmon
3. Vikings - Kalil
4. Browns -

Fleece Dan synder for this year and next years entire draft. Thats my option 1  all other options are moot under these circumstances because dan Snyder cant help himself

Trade down to where you're comfortable Trent Richardson will still be available.

I've advocated drafting Richardson previously. I'd rather have Blackmon at 4 if all else fails and then maybe try to move up with the ATL pick to get Richardson.

Under no circumstances do I see ever thinking drafting RGIII as a good thing unless he falls to the ATL pick later in the first round and we know that won't happen.

so you are advocating taking a WR from a conference that doesnt play any defense but not a QB?....just wanted to be clear on that....and i take it your saying you would just trade down and then take richardson...i would be cool with that...just as long as the team we are trading with is within the top 10...no guarantees when u trade down u get the player u want...obviously switching with the redskins would be ideal to take Richardson

Flame me all u want but i would take RGIII at #4...if he was available and blackmon was gone...until the combine comes and school workouts i think luck is clearly #1 and Kalil is #2 with RGIII at #3...i have no faith in colt mccoy whatsoever...i think RGIII already has a better arm and he obviously can run a hell of alot better...if we are sitting at the #4 spot with no way of trading out, i take RGIII and hope to get Floyd or Jeffery

i love richardson but as ive said i hate the idea of taking a RB at #4...and i also love blackmon as well but his size scares me...he is only 6'1...everyone keeps saying we need playmakers on offense and RGIII, if he is there waiting for u to draft him, is the best playmaker in the draft
