Yeah, that was a "wait, wut?" moment for me too.
Really, I was thinking 3rd or 4th, and I'm thinking, NF, after all he's been through is going to be done with the Browns for blowing a 4th round pick? That's the least of our worries.
To be honest. to me, this year is the one where we need to expect improvement... I understand that its the NFL and people are impatient. But by any objective measure, this team overachieved in '09 and '10 compared to the talent level as a whole. We sucked in '09, and somehow, with the benefit of some late opponents that were other wise distracted, the Mangenius got them motivated, maybe to make sure they didn't all get fired, dunno. Last year, Hillis caught lightning in a bottle... whatever.
This year ('11) was about what they were capable of. the Defense is much better and much more consistent, though we will need a few upgrades.
The bad part is that the '11 draft was more of a "maintenance" draft than an "add talent" draft. Took Taylor to replace Rogers. Little to replace, well whatever average receiver he replaced. Cameron wasn't a position of need. Marecic to replace Vickers (in an attmept to get a more WCO type FB, I guess). And the rest of the guys were kind of see what we can get. That really leaves Sheard as the only obivous upgrade over the position he replaced and part of that was schematic. (Little should have been an upgrade, but, whatever)
But, the good news is, in drafts like that you get younger if they pan out, and really, compared to the past, there haven't been too many misses. Hell, you can't even get pissed about Hillis, he wasn't supposed to do anything and we got to get rid of Brady Quinn to get him.
Couple things I'd like to see regardless of who they pick. I think we need a veteran WR. the younger recievers on this team, and I include Cribbs in this need a mentor, to shoe them how to do things in the league. When was the last time we had a vet receiver that had any real success that didn't get a staph infection or run over someone in the street? They need not be the #1 on the team, and you could still draft another one. But, we need some help there.
Also need to get faster, generally, at linebacker. And another CB. I think we do that, and Sheard and Taylor having a year under their belts and the run D should improve.
Seems like they want to bring Stienbach back, probably at a pay cut, so, need some help on the right of the OL...
So, then it all comes back to RB and QB. That's the trick. I think they are gong to play up RGIII like crazy, hope someone thinks he's Cam Newton and trade down.
Still leaves us with Colt, but, I think Holgren probably beleives in the 3 years to blossom rule... so... we're stuck with him unless a deal too good to turn down comes along. If they think Trent Richardson is the guy, they should try to get him I guess.
I'm still curious how this whole Peyton Manning/Andrew Luck thing is going to shake itself out. This is different than Favre/Rodgers. I mean, Rodgers was quite a bit later in the first and Favre didn't have a long term deal at the time. So, we're talking a lot more resources... a #1 pick and its cap space and big contract, long term at one position. Not to say that the Browns should try to get Peyton, I'm more saying that there will be downstream impact, who does try to get Peyton and what dominoes does that knock over? Random thought. (They also need to pay some other folks on a bad team, dunno what they do there)
