Cleveland Browns (2011 season)

I hope like hell they wouldn't do that...I think you need to get more for moving down 6 spots than a middle second and a 6th or 7th, plus I think Peterson would be worth taking over that deal.

I'll be [censored]ed if Peterson is there and they trade out...you don't pass on the oportunity to take, arguably, the best player in the draft at #6 if he's there without issues. Him and Haden together at CB would be awesome.

Don't shoot the messenger:wink:

From what I've been reading, the Browns are focused on two positions at #6, DL or WR (Dareus and Green are my guesses and I don't think either will be there). Is it a smoke screen? It's hard to tell at this moment. But I'm like you, if Peterson is there you take him without a second thought.

If Dareus, Green and Peterson are off the board. I hope Cleveland would trade down if the right deal is there. I think it is contingent if Gabbert (Vikings) or Miller (Pats) are still on the board. Are there other suitors for the #6 overall? I'm sure there are a few, but none that I have seen discussed on the forums.

Yeah, and I'm usually a "draft for need" kind of guy, and there are definitely bigger needs than CB, but I don't see how you pass on a player of Peterson's calibre if he falls to you. Hopefully, if it happens, Big Show/Heckert feel the same way.

Anyone who has seen Eric Wright play against Boldin knows corner is a need...and Sheldon Brown is like, what, 100? We will need a new stud corner very soon, as in now, and that's a position that the FA market tends to dictate overpaying for mediocre talent. Getting one in the draft to pair with Haden for 6-10 years would be monumental for making this team compete week in and week out.

Immediately, I'd say WR and DE are bigger needs, but CB is one as well. Pairing Peterson with Haden is a championship pair of corners. We haven't sniffed anything in that league since Minnifield/Dixon and these guys could be better. My IMO, of course.

The one negative, and you guys probably have heard the same thing, that I have heard about drafting Peterson is that in the past couple years you have put an awful lot of money in the defensive backfield and have not shored up any other position. With Peterson, other teams might not be able to throw the ball against us but they will be able to run like hell because we do not have anyone on our DL (I know this draft is deep but it will take a while for rookies to catch on).

The reason I mentioned the swap with Houston was because Cleveland would get Julio Jones plus additional draft choices. I won't be disappointed if the Browns draft Peterson because Heckert is doing the drafting:)

Yes, and yes, but the thing is though, DL are usually part of some sort of "rotation" in this day and age...rarely does any DL play more than, I dunno, 60-70% of the snaps anymore? Corners are out there all the time (even in goal line situations) and a lot of times they are on an island. Now I am in no way minimizing the need for DL, nor do I think that is not a greater need by volume than CB...but give me a championship CB and then let me fill my rotation with finds like Rubin and some guys in the upper middle rounds and then maybe a serviceable free agent or 3. Hell Schaefering can be a perfectly good DE at the back end of a rotation...if we get a couple of solid 4-3 veterans or maybe a tackle in rounds 2-4, we could still be in good shape. I also look at it this way...will one really good DL make our entire DL an elite unit? No. Will one really good CB make our DB one of the most feared in football? I think it could. Do something really well, and then shore up the rest as you can, which is why I say stick to power running and shutting down the pass, and then get WRs and DL in rounds 2-6 and maybe a FA or two. But that's just me and my IMHO, IMO.

I will not even blink if we draft Peterson with our sixth pick and I certainly agree with you regarding how to fill our DL vacancies. Now all we need is a WR and RT and here we come NFL.

If a teams gets good enough at one area, it can dictate what opponents do and can help mask deficiencies.. A great secondary can help the front seven. They can create more opportunities for coverage sacks. They can allow you to blitz more often. They can make the other team closer to one-dimensional.

If the DBs are great, I don't fear other teams going to the run game against the Browns. I mean, if other teams are running the ball because they have to and not just because they feel like it, isn't that progress?

As far as DL go - I'll admit I'm a little gun shy because of busts like Courtney Brown, Gerard Warren, etc. - and perhaps that's not sensible. The point about DL rotations also has merit though. For as little sense as it would seem to make to tie up that much first round money in players at one position, it makes even less sense to me to tie it up in positions where they players aren't playing every snap.

My Falcons are trying to move up to snag either Julio or AJ.

Any news if the Browns would trade all the way down to 27? (More picks/future picks included, obviously).
Doubt they'd want to go that far, and also depends pretty heavily on how the top-5 shake out...

I might think about it if your Falcons would make the Mike Ditka trade plus give us your #1 and #2 next year along with Michael Jenkins and then I would still have to think about it.

If I can get Green or Peterson I pull the trigger and don't look back unless another team is willing to trade the farm to the Browns to move up. If those two are taken I look to trade down to the 10-12 range and take Jones. I don't like the trade up to get 2 in the top 12. This draft is too deep to trade away 2nd and 3rd round picks.
If I could get 4-5 extra second or 3rd round picks I wouldn't have any problem with multiple trade downs and then draft Heyward at the bottom of the first.

I'd do it for 1-4 this year, 1 and 2 next year, and Jenkins. Even better if the Browns trade down to a lower pick and then make this move for Jones.
