Cleveland Browns (2011 season)

Twelve hours later and I still hate it. The trade-down, the trade-up, and the selection. I'm gonna have to see how the rest of thie draft shakes out and look at it from a step back, but instinctually, I'm not happy...right now. There are innumerable reasons this franchise has been a joke since the God forsaken rebirth, and I don't see what happened yesterday as a real step forward unless Matt Ryan blows out a knee and Atlanta's picks end up higher than the late 20s.

Hey guys! What should we talk about today?

How are Atlanta fans thinking of the trade? Pay too much? Or they don't care since they got Julio Jones?

And hate to do this to ya, but us Browns fans are hoping for a Matt Ryan injury and Atlanta going 4-12 next year

Speaking of the trade.. is it just me... or does Julio Jones remind anyone else of the 2nd coming of Braylon Edwards... dude has stone hands... that trade was brilliant.

Hated the trade up for Taylor... but what else is new with this team... This is the one thing that blows about the new 3 day format... now we're left to analyze every little detail without being able to see the full picture laid out. Atleast with the old style we'd have had our 3 pics and have a better idea what was going through their heads... or maybe not.. its cleveland after all.

The consensus from Falcons brass is that they felt the team was much closer to a "Finished Product" and just needed one more big piece to push them over the top. Julio should be that piece.

Realistically, we weren't going to get anyone with #27 this year and a mid-low late pick next year in the first that would help us immediately. We've went defense in early rounds last two years, now its time for them to grow up a bit and play.

Some Falcons fans are unhappy cause they thought we needed defense after getting smoked by the Pack. The counter argument is - we couldn't stay on the field with the offense and we had to make a move to keep Rodgers on the sideline, so that was the more pressing need. Julio probably needs to catch 40 balls and 5 TD's to make this seem legit. The Falcons have ALOT of size and strength at WR now.

Worst part of the trade for me - losing this years 2nd round pick! Now what the hell am I gonna do for the first two hours tonight? Ha!

This.

This pick makes no sense.

I challenge ANYONE to make this make sense.

Because it doesnt. The Browns are idiots. They have been since they came back. This move looks absolutely retarded.

Nothing impresses me about Taylor. Wilkerson looks like a MUCH better player, and he lasted to the Jets at 30.

My negatives for Phil Taylor:

-work ethic
-inoperable condition in both feet that causes pain, will have to deal with and have to play through entire career
-conditioning issues
-no pass rush whatsoever, similar player already on roster in Rubin
-no impressive game film, had an impressive senior bowl, but then again so did Charlie fucking Frye

Defend this pick. Someone. Please.

Well, the trade down, I think was good... First, Peterson and Green were off the board. (Despite my shots at Peterson earlier in the thread, his talent is undeniable) Obviously the Falcons like Julio, Holmgren liked a bunch of draft picks more... and, yeah, to Wolf's point, the Falcons are in impact mode, the Browns in Build depth mode... good for everyone.

The trade up... First, I'll say that Browns fans, somewhere in their deepest darkest psyche, will never forget that there was no fucking way Matt Millen wasn't taking Roy Williams... taking WR's is what he does. He wasn't taking Winslow... period... we got fucking taken by Matt fucking Millen... Oh, wait, back to this year... my problem with small trade downs (5 or fewer slots) is that I don't see why there aren't more pick and trades, rather than trade and picks... I mean, is there a reason you don't see, more often, your guy get taken and then an immediate offer for them? I don't know... I have no idea how many teams Taylor would have gotten a look from. What is certain though is that I don't remember seeing such a run on Line players ever... the big bodies were coming off the board like crazy.

The pick... who the hell knows... if we don't hear a thing about this guy for the next 8 years and he just plugs up holes.... probably worked out pretty well.

End of the day, we've got 2 seconds... and there are a ton of pretty good looking players on the board... Ryan Williams stands out...

Finally... remember this. We did not, last year, draft the golden Emu, thus forcing us to this year draft the icon. I miss hatehineygate right now. It could be worse.

(Also, keep in mind that Free Agency hasn't happened yet... so... the holes aren't as bad as they seem)

I can only hope when the Browns traded up they know that someone higher than 27 wanted Taylor. We'll never know if that was the case. I still would have sat at 27 and taken the best player rather than give up their 3rd round pick to move up a few spots. I would have traded the Falcons 4 at best.
I know others disagree with me, but I would have loved to take Heyward because I knew the Steelers liked him. I know he is more of a DE in a 3-4, but I think he could do the same thing with the Browns that he did with OSU and line up outside on early downs for better run stuffing from and end and move inside on passing downs for a better pass rush for a tackle. I think at 27 there were still some very good players on the board and the Browns didn't need to trade up for a guy that would have probably still been there. I do think they need to get Taylor on a diet when he gets to Cleveland. Get him to lose 20-30 lbs of baby fat and he might be a better fit for the 4-3. I just hope this move does open up the LB's to make more plays and helps stuff the run. I think they need to find a rush end with one of the next two picks.
I've said it a few times, but if they know Michael Floyd will be in the supplemental draft this summer I would target him as my WR and give up the 2nd or 3rd round pick next year to get him. If not WR should be their other 2nd rounder today. I think through the next 5 picks they need a DE, a WR, a CB, a LB, and a OL. Give me Bowers (he's a top 5 talent in the second round so the knee isn't as big if a deal), WR(tall with speed Doss?), Mathews, Chekwa, and Boren and I would leave the draft happy. Of course since I want these players there is no chance the Browns take any of them. Aside from Joe Thomas the only time they've ever taken the guy I wanted was when they eventually picked McCoy last year.

Off the top of my head, these are guys I hope we target during the second round with our two picks.

Akeem Ayers OLB UCLA
Bruce Carter OLB UNC
Dontay Moch OLB Nevada
Rahim Moore FS UCLA
Martez Wilson ILB Illinois
Greg Little WR UNC
Brandon Harris CB Miami
Aaron Williams CB Texas
Leonard Hankerson WR Miami

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until they screw up. Maybe the mix of Taylor and Rubin will shut down an opposing interior running game and then they reply on DE's and LB's to provide the pass rush. If you have 2 guys that require a double team in order to block I can see that opening up some gaps for everyone else. Last years draft wasn't impressive in April, but it worked during the season.

you can replace the name phil taylor with joe haden or tj ward and you get exactly what was in this thread about a year ago.

Probably the only pick people liked last year was McCoy. Looking back the only change I would make would have been to take Kurt Coleman rather than the other safety that they drafted. I just don't understand why Browns management has to be anti-Buckeye. There should be a rule that they need to draft one player from OSU every year.

I will admit, I was not a fan of the TJ Ward pick last year. (I do not think anyone was...)

But if they hit on this pick, and Taylor plays like a #21 pick should, then next year they could draft Willy fucking Wonka and I will have faith in the pick. That is how little faith I have in Phil Taylor.

Uh...The Browns were picking BEFORE the Jets prior to the trade.

Cleveland at 27

New York at 30

Hmm, yeah, nevermind.

Perhaps the Jets were looking to move up themselves.

The Taylor pick only makes sense if we get a pass rusher tonight. That's what we need most now. We need a DE to put pressure on the QB more than anything. H&H look like geniuses if they are able to get a pas rushing DE to compliment Taylor and none of us will be questioning them.

Without a doubt.

The way I see it, they're trying to build their own version of the Williams Wall in Minnesota. I'm not sure if this was the right pick to do that, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt for now.

We've been begging for the Browns to address the trenches in meaningful numbers for years now. Let's see what happens tonight. In years past, even when they'd address the OL or DL with an early pick, they'd pat themselves on the back and then start picking possession receivers and project LBs. If they truly continue to address the the DL with their remaining picks in this draft (and maybe divert one to find somebody for the right side of the OL) I'll be happy with the Browns' approach.
