Cleveland Browns (2011 season)

Conspiracy theory here, but maybe the browns trading up is what fucked up the ravens pick enough for them to miss, after all, they probably didn't think in their wildest dreams Taylor wouldn't be there. Just a thought, probably not true.

 "THat's just what they'd be EXPECTING us to do..."

No, they said the reason the Ravens missed is because they had a deal worked out with the Bears that fell through at the last second.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezk5xKe_vHg"]YouTube - Phil Taylor vs Oklahoma[/ame]

It probably isn't a good sign when a professional Dart player named Phil Taylor is the first thing you find when searching his name on youtube...

This video is very underwhelming....Just a few things I saw:

  • His strength is apparently against the run, so this tape doesn't show many of his strengths as Oklahoma was a shotgun spread team last year
  • He gets moved off the ball quite a bit for a supposed elite DT in college
  • Some of his run stops are "luck" hits...he gets pushed off the LOS and the RB finds him rather than Taylor tracking down the ball carrier
  • He does like pretty smooth for a guy 340lbs
I don't know...I'm not fond of the pick. They have been picking in the top 6 for a while now for a reason...they don't have elite talent. Tonight was a chance to gain ground.

I think there is a pattern in how the Browns operate these trade-ups. I think they target a guy ahead of their "choice" player and when that guy is taken they strike to make sure they get their player.

This year their "target" was Adrien Clayborne and when he was taken the Browns moved on Taylor. My guess is the Browns circled Taylor as their choice and were willing to wait until the 27th pick unless Clayborne came off the board. At that moment they moved on their man to make sure they got him. Last year Toby Gerhardt and Ben Tate were taken right in front of Hardesty and the Browns traded up after the Tate pick to lock up a RB.

The Browns also reached on TJ Ward although it seems to have worked out, but Nate Allen was picked directly in front of Ward forcing the Browns hand early in the second round.

I think its more of a strategy they incorporate. They're willing to reach on a position of need if he is the highest rated player left on their board and that includes trading up.

Not saying Phil is a bad pick but he would have been there at 27. I had Wilkinson out of Temple rated higher. Stupid trade to move up 6 spots for a guy that would have been there and give up a 3rd round pick.

This was just as stupid as the move to get Hardesty last year. Damn you guys stop trying to out smart yourselves. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

I'm another one who would have been much happier with Wilkinson. I also want it noted, I hated the TJ Ward pick last year. Here' the story on Taylor.

Maybe it's just me, but after looking at players left for the second round, I'd have preferred Drake Nevis over Phil Taylor, straight up. Especially in a 4-3.

At least Nevis could provide a pass-rush from the tackle position unlike Taylor. Now you've got 2 defensive tackles in Cleveland who pose zero threat of getting to the QB.

I'm pretty disappointed, but definately hope the kid proves me wrong.

look at jauron's defenses in chicago when they were dominant. then you'll understand this pick.

kc, philly and no were all possible landing spots. the reason baltimore was trading out was because taylor was gone. if cleveland acquires a rush end, then you'll be able to see the plan.

So it's not OK to miss out on Phil Taylor, in fact give up a third round pick to move up 6 spots. (4th rounder woulda been nice since they just picked up an extra but oh well that's the Browns) I just don't see what the fuck they were seeing. Sure he had a good senior bowl...Charlie Frye was the MVP of the sr bowl in 2005 if I remember correctly. Atleast he was a third rounder. So what if the Jets picked him there were plenty of other players to take...Wilkerson, Bowers, Ingram or how about Cameron Heyward at 27!?!?! for instance and they'd still have their third rounder.

I really didn't like the move ALL the way down but they did get an extra 1st rounder next year (which they'll more than likely fuck up too) and a handful of other picks so there's that.

Picks 37 and 59 should be interesting...

I see the plan BUT why trade up, give up a 3rd round selection when Taylor (maybe), Wilkinson, Stephen Paea (2), Casey (2) all would have been there and fit the same need AND give you a more well-rounded player.

I like Taylor but Cleveland has multiple needs and in order to do that besides FA is via the draft. That 3rd round pick could have been used for a Right Tackle, Corner, or Safety. Just saying we need the dudes.

THIS

There were so many DTs that they could have picked at #27 or even in with their 2nd rounder I just didn't like giving up their 3rd rounder to get a 3-4 NT.

Then again, if we can get Bowers at #37. I can live with this. But then again he could be one of those guys that aren't even on the Browns draft board due to the injury concern.

Back to Taylor, not that I don't like the pick. I can understand it, it is a poor man's version of what the Detroit Lions did with Fairley/Suh. You get two huge DTs that will just clog the middle. (versus the Lion's version that will penetrate and distrupt up the middle)

BUT, I hated trading up 6 spots to get him when you can get a perceived equal target IF Taylor was picked.

Ok guys, a lot has been said about Phil Taylor already. Some think it's a good pick, some think it's garbage. I've had a night to think about it and here's my take.

First of all, I LOVE the trade H&H made with Atlanta last night. We got some great picks. It was nice to see a trade for good value on draft day. As far as Taylor goes, I was upset and very worried at first. However, now that I have had time to think about it, the more I like the pick. He can stop the run and take up double teams. However, there is a flip side to this: we need to rush the QB. The Taylor pick only makes sense if we get a pass rusher tonight. That's what we need most now. We need a DE to put pressure on the QB more than anything. H&H look like geniuses if they are able to get a pas rushing DE to compliment Taylor and none of us will be questioning them.

As far as the second pick tonight goes, I am not sold on a WR. The question you have to ask yourself if this: are any of these wide receivers better than MoMass and Cribbs/Robiskie? I am not sold on that being the case. Yes, Hankerson, Smith and Young looked good at the combine but do not have the speed/size to be a legit number 1. I think that we should go with OLB or O lineman with our second 2nd round pick. We can get a WR either next year or via free agency.

That's my take on the first 2 rounds. Please be kind with your responses
