Cleveland Browns (2010 season)

Colt will be our QB. That much is simple.

I'm on the fence about a new coach.
If Mangini is gone then I'd say stake a fine shot at Ryan possibly being the HC.

He's a defensive oriented mind, which is what I'd prefer myself in the AFC north.

We are in desperate need of a new OC. But the roster needs a serious infusion of youth and talent. The right side of the Oline needs some work. We require an upgrade at most every level of play. CB, FS, LB, DE, WR & HB. No I'm not saying Hillis cannot be our feature back. However having a solid #2 to spell him is crucial these days. I'd prefer to be known for a feared rushing attack then passing. Maybe that's just my preference but if you can't run the ball in the NFL you can't do to much else.

A couple positions we can address in FA. The question is how much of a splash is the front office willing to make in that regard?

These past couple of games have been a serious let-down. This team is by far playing down to its competition and it's frustrating to know that.

well wont have to worry about Boldin burning eric wright again this week

Browns placed CB Eric Wright (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.
Wright finishes his disaster of a contract year with 42 tackles, one pick, and nine pass breakups. He was benched at midseason for rookie Joe Haden. Wright is still just 25 years old and has flashed the talent to be a borderline No. 1 corner in the NFL, but may want to explore a one-year deal elsewhere to "rehab" his value. This was easily his worst NFL season.

I'm honestly a little surprised at the pessimism on the board. For the first time in forever we have a QB to build around, and a competent Defensive Coordinator. I'd be willing to bet a decent amount that Ryan is our head coach next year, and I'd prefer to see a #1 receiver taken in the first, but a good DE wouldn't hurt my feelings.

This year has gone significantly better than I ever expected.

And I forgot to mention Hillis. We finally have a decent core...get us a legit HC and some more depth and we could become relevant as early as next year IMO.

I think this team is 4-5 players, a new OC, and a little luck away from being a playoff team or better next year.

I think the pessimism is so ingrained at this point, it's hard not to be. But, you are correct in that this season has played out (on the whole) better than most expected. It's just the disappointment after being teased by wins over elite teams like New Orleans and New England followed by this collapse has been pretty rough.

I'm fairly convinced Rob Ryan is going to be a HC somewhere next year. If mangini gets canned (and I think he is), I hope Ryan gets the promotion. He's done incredibly well with so little talent here and I think would be a perfect AFC North coach.

Colt looks like the real deal IMO. He's showing exactly why so many of us wanted him so badly last spring. He may not have the measurables, or the strongest arm, but he is a winner and a gamer. What he's done so far with so few weapons to work with as a rookie starter against some really good teams is remarkable.

This offseason the main needs that need to be addressed is at WR and a pass rusher and I agree that addressing either with the 1st pick would be fine by me, though I would prefer a WR.

All in all, things do appear to be on an uptick, but there's still a lot of work to be done. At least these losses aren't in the blowout fashion we've become accustomed to. Having the gaping hole at QB finally addressed is a fantastic feeling.

Yes, I think Mangini is going to get fired but it will be a mistake. The guy can coach...it is just unfortunate that he doesn't have the talent or the time to make it happen. I would rather see them can Daboll and get a new OC in here than scrap the whole staff.

I don't care if Vince Lombardi or Paul Brown was here, this team doesn't have the talent or the depth to compete week in and week out. I think the team has made progress this year and has not regressed. The last two weeks have been dreadful, however I still think one more year of Mangini would be better than another rebuild.

I completely agreee. I think Mangini has done damn good with the lack of talent our roster has. Another draft, another free agency and I think keeping Mangini is the solution. Hire a new OC, Josh McDaniels?

think about it like this. if mangini gets fired, it is essentially being stated that he and the rest of the coaching staff cost this team wins. so, assuming cleveland finishes no better than 6-10, you are saying that the team should have been 7-9 or 8-8.

therefore, with an entire offseason to improve, and a new coaching staff, you have essentially set the bar at .500 or better, and a challenge for a playoff spot, and be competitive in every single game.

so, if/when this isn't achieved with a new coaching staff, will they be fired after one year?

I think they would bring in a WCO guy rather than McDaniels. Maybe Jim Zorn.

I hate how the Cleveland Media, most namely Tony Grossi and Mary Kay Cabot have been pounding the drum for his firing for well over a year now. They are like vultures. The bottom line is they need playmakers. The media is in love with Rob Ryan because of his funny quotes. Ryan's D has slipped the last 2 games. Let's put the blame where it is due.

I hope Mangini stays. this team desperately needs consitency from a HC and system perspective. If he goes, I am fine with Holmgren or Gruden. I'll slit my wrists if they hire John Fox.

I don't think Ryan is a HC next year, I really don't. I think he will be back. Which is good, because if we can get a DE and another player in the secondary, the defense will be formidable next year.

I agree with bill that there should be some optimism, with Hillis, McCoy, the improved defense, and the free agent no one is talking about much, Ben Watson, who has been a savior in the passing game. We have built the left side of the line well, so if we can get a player on the right side (or if the RG we have can figure it out) and Hardesty can at least be a backup that isn't Mike Bell, that will leave us primarily needing WRs.

As for Mangini, I agree it would be a mistake to fire him. I mean, does anyone NOT see improvement from his 1-10 start last year to where the team is now? Yes, we just lost 2 games to twat-fuck teams, and that will probably cost him his job. But I don't think Holmgren could look anyone in the eye and say this was a 9-7 team if someone else had been coaching them. We were in position to win all season, and we lost a bunch of close ones. Hell being competitive and sticking it to NE and NO is leaps and bounds over where this team has been since it came back, and that includes the smoke and mirrors 10-6 season of 2007. The team is making progress, and if we get some combination of a WR, R-OL, DE, and secondary player, this will be a team to be reckoned with next year. I think Mangini has earned the right to coach one more season, but that's just me.

seriously. look at the total filth that cleveland had at the qb spot last year. DA lost his job to a late round draft pick rookie, twice. Denver has so much faith in brady quinn that despite trading a 1000 yard rb to get him, he is 3rd string in denver. in fact, denver pondered using an injured kyle orton over him last sunday if tebow got hurt.

also i think the reason alot of people in the cleveland media are pushing for mangini to be fired is because of the expectations for him to be fired after last year since he is not a Holmgren guy...basically this year was his "contract" year where he was supposed to prove to Holmgren and everyone that this team is improved and will win more games...well he currently has 2 more games to improve the record from last year...and what was going on during the cinci game where he was actually calling in plays for the defense instead of Ryan? i never heard the explanation for that but i just assumed he was pissed off at ryan's defensive schemes and was calling in different ones because he was doing everything possible to save his job...i do like mangini and would feel bad if hes fired but live ive said before i do not want to see us fire mangini to hire the defensive backs coach for the Houston Texans...we need to make a good hire that we can hopefully rely on for more then 2 years
