With the Combine over and the NFL draft approaching fast, we're starting to get a pretty good idea of how the draft will look. Of course, there are always surprises (thanks, Al Davis). I'm going to analyze the Cleveland's first round selection (and some other options with other picks) and discuss the impact of free agency for the Browns.
The Browns could address a variety of positions with their first-round pick. The team could use starting talent or depth at nearly every position on the roster. Holmgren has stated that he feels teams should build their defenses with the draft and the offense with free agency. With that in mind, I feel that the Browns should address needs on defense. This year's draft really helps the Browns in that regard, considering that it appears that the first round will be dominated by defense.
The Browns will draft Eric Berry if he is available. Unfortunately for Browns fans, don't expect him to be available with the #7 overall pick. His combine only solidified his status as the best safety in the draft - and rightfully so. He's been an elite player at the college level for multiple seasons, and appears ready to make the jump to the pros. I expect Berry to go anywhere between the third and fifth overall picks, just out of the Browns reach. A trade up for Berry cannot be ruled out, however, considering the almost unbelievable amount of picks that the Browns have accumulated. I feel that Berry is #1 on the Browns draft boards, but he is a highly unlikely pick at #7.
After the Combine, Florida cornerback Joe Haden has witnessed his stock drop out of the top-10, according to draft experts. This could work in Cleveland's favor if he's their guy after Eric Berry, which is highly possible. I would certainly not rule out a trade down, maybe with the 49ers, who have also accumulated picks in the draft and might want one of the offensive tackles in the top 10. I'm not sure I buy the chatter about Haden's 40 time dropping him out of the top 10, however. Premier cornerbacks are important in the NFL, and 40 times have been massively overrated by the media lately. Film should always carry importance over Combine results, as we've seen from recent Combine monsters (Vernon Gholston is the most recent who comes to mind - productive in college, certainly has the upside worthy of a first round selection, but 6 overall was a reach).
My prediction for the Browns first round pick is cornerback Joe Haden. Whether they trade down or not, I feel that this is the guy the Browns draft on April 22nd.
This year's draft is deep at important positions. There will be plenty of good players available outside of the first round. Dexter McCluster from Mississippi looks to be an explosive option in the second round if the Browns decide to go with defense in the first round. Jerry Hughes, outside linebacker/defensive end from TCU, appears to have what it takes to be a productive player in the NFL. Thaddeus Gibson increased his draft status with a strong combine performance, showcasing his explosive pass-rush abilities, and might end up as a high second-round pick or low first-round pick. Morgan Burnett from Georgia Tech and Darrell Stuckey from Kansas are both strong options at safety for the Browns. Look for the Browns to continue building the defense through the draft and take a safety, if Berry is unavailable in the first round.
Late picks are nearly impossible to guess. I'm not even going to try. There have been rumors of Troy Smith returning to Cleveland. Baltimore has placed a fifth-round tender on Smith, which is extremely fair for other teams. Smith carries good value for a fifth-round pick. Smith could come and compete for the starting job immediately, which would please both fans and Troy Smith. I would certainly not be opposed to this option, especially given the amount of picks that the Browns have.
Free agency has resulted in the Browns signing linebacker Scott Fujita and offensive tackle Tony Pashos. Scott Fujita will likely start inside along with promising young linebacker D'Qwell Jackson. Fujita is a leader and solid contributor on defense, and should be an immediate upgrade for the Browns. Tony Pashos has started in his career, but has had injury problems. At the very least, he will provide needed depth on the right side of the offensive line. He may compete for a starting job.
It has been reported that the Browns are pursuing tight end Ben Watson. Watson would be a good addition for the Browns. They have a big need at tight end and Watson is still productive.
This year is a big year for the Browns. I feel that the Browns did a solid job of getting good depth players last year, and now it's time for the Browns to start adding starters and playmakers. Hopefully the accumulation of picks can result in smart draft decisions that pay-off in the future. It will still be a rough year, but I feel that the new regime is shaping the team the right way. Is the future bright? Not yet. But it's not pitch black.
