DING DING DING! We have a winner!!!

As I was reading the last page I was going to chime in, luckily I read the most recent posts to see BuckeyeMike beating me to the punch.

The labor issues should have a HUGE effect on who comes out for the draft. If no new labor deal is seen on the horizon then only the most desperate underclassman should declare (and even then it isn't a smart move).

Of course that could be worked around if the NFL did a deal that said that the 2011 draft would still be under the old rules, if so, everyone and their mother is coming out.

there is a flip side to this. one of the biggest issues surrounding the current CBA is a rookie pay scale/slotting system. if that is not implemented prior to the draft, then underclassmen could be more tempted to come out because they risk falling under the slotting system if they wait a year.

From the above article, Wallace says that his ankle is fine and he will be ready to play against the Patriots and he believes that he should be the starting QB. He says that the offense was starting to gel in his last two games and that is one of the reasons he should start. He also believes that they should select one QB and stay with that QB. I say if they select one QB he can sit on the bench until Colt starts to go downhill.

Joe Thomas chimed in saying that when Jake is ready to play that he should be the starting QB:) Joe and Jake must go fishing together.

In the Land of Deficient QBs, the man who doesn't throw touchdown passes to the other team is king:

That's why I said this...

Basically saying since the full labor deal isn't completed yet that the 2011 rules will be under the old rules versus whatever slotting system they create in the new agreement.

But if all that is in the air, there will be rumors saying the 2011 draft will be under the new rules no matter what. I think alot of kids stay in school for one more year versus the risk of not playing at all next year AND not playing football at all.

Then again, that could be a huge business boom for the UFL

Some bye week banter, as usual, nothing profound. The Browns are ranked 21 in this weeks power poll. I hope this link works, if not somebody please fix it. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/11/02/week-eight-power-rankings/

The Browns are 2-5, but have been in every game with 8 minutes left in the fourth quarter. With New England coming in this week, and the Jets next week, we will have played 7 teams in the above power rankings top ten after only 9 games. With a little better QB play, and any corner not named Wright, we could easily be 4-3 or even 5-2.

I watched a few minutes of the New England last Sunday. Including the punter, I counted at least 4 rookies starting. I wish we drafted like that.

Earlier in this thread I wanted McCoy kept on the bench until the offense got it's shit together. After two starts, and my worst fears not realized, I'm now in the play McCoy camp. Let's see what he can do, high first round QBs cost a fortune.

Finally, if McCoy works out , I would use or first two draft picks on linemen.
One on the defensive side, the other on offensive side. From there I would look at WRs and DBs.

Amen. Wright has been, in a word, terrible.

Some tidbits from Holmgren's press conference yesterday. It seems like it's all about wins and losses as to whether Mangini will be back or not. Also, he talked about the fact that they need to find out about McCoy this year.
BEREA, Ohio -- In his first extended press conference since the regular season started, Browns President Mike Holmgren delivered mixed messages that left some major issues open to interpretation.

He said the decision on whether to keep rookie Colt McCoy as the starting quarterback is "a coach's decision." But he indicated that at some point soon the franchise has to more fully evaluate McCoy before heading into the off-season.

He praised coach Eric Mangini and his staff for working hard, but expressed dissatisfaction with the 2-5 record and the performance of the offense.
And in the storyline that just won't go away, Holmgren would not close the door completely on coaching again.
Talks about McCoy and the possibility of him coming back to coaching.
On other matters:

? Holmgren indicated the team was not interested in pursuing released Minnesota wide receiver Randy Moss. "Our focus, I believe, has to be on developing our young receivers," he said.

? Holmgren expressed dissatisfaction with the way the receivers are used in the system of offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, but said interfering would "throw a monkey wrench into it."

Still, he defended the wideouts. "Let's not jump on the receivers too much here," he said. "I think they're better than OK. I think they're pretty good. It's just that their numbers haven't been very good."

? Holmgren said running back Jerome Harrison was traded because he was unhappy with his diminished role following the acquisition of Peyton Hillis and the drafting of Montario Hardesty, who has since been injured.
"I always felt if a player is really unhappy and it makes some sense for the organization, then you try to do something to make everything right. That's kind of how it came down," he said, adding that Harrison did not ask to be traded.

? Holmgren defended the drafting of Hardesty in the second round, which cost the Browns three draft picks to move up.

"Hardesty is a big disappointment to all of us, not the young man, just that it happened," Holmgren said. "The doctors are telling me [his surgically repaired left knee] will come back and be stronger. I'm hopeful about that. The injury thing I don't know if you can predict that. He had such a good senior year [at Tennessee]."

i think if and when the browns finish below .500 it will be the end of mangenious and the era of holmgren...and there is a chance we might have to have him coach because it sounds like if he wants to coach that bad he could take a coaching gig elsewhere...if he coaches in cleveland i hope he gets rob ryan to stay

My bet is Jon Gruden. Holmgren has his hands full as President. Gruden is "like a son" as Holmgren has stated. I'm sure he is dying to change the offense. Gruden would bring is the West Coast Offense. At age 62 one has to ask, why?

I have heard Gruden's name mentioned a couple weeks ago with reference to the Browns. I really don't care who they bring in as HC as long as they keep Ryan who has the respect of the players. There was one other name mentioned besides Gruden but I cannot remember the name.

The Browns will definitely finish below .500, but for Mangini I am imagining there will be a huge difference between, say, 7-9 and 5-11 again. If he wins 7 games and gets fired, basically Holmgren is going to have to look at a camera and say someone else could have gotten more than 7 wins out of this team, and with talent level and injuries, I think that's a really hard sell. 5-11 again, however (which would mean 3-6 in the 2nd half), and I bet he is gone for sure.

Was it Del Rio? I feel like I've heard his name with the Browns a few times.

I don't think it was Del Rio. He's not a part of the Holmgren coaching tree. I have heard names like Marty Mornhinweg and Steve Mariucci in the past. Both of those guys have Holmgren ties, but I wouldn't want either of them coaching the Browns.

I've heard from a beat writer that Bill Cowher's name surfaces from time to time. Not WCO schooled but he's won a Super Bowl. With the recent passing of his wife, he may want to get back in the game.
