Browns coach Eric Mangini disagreed Sunday with receiver Syndric Steptoe's agent, who blamed Steptoe's season-ending torn labrum on the team practicing full-speed in a driving rain.

I guess he should have limited himself to playing in the AFL but with that going down the tubes he is going to be hurting or he is going to have to find a place where there is climate control.

Shaun Smith released; small market baseball; and clues about LeBron's future - Cleveland Sports Blog Network

Shaun Smith became the first training camp surprise of 2009 when he was released this weekend.Cleveland Reboot: "I guess I had to see it coming. Take an underachieving, annually overweight, mouthy backup defensive tackle and insert him in the radar sights of an ultra-authoritarian, no-nonsense head coach and the results were predictable. In a new era of accountability and de-emphasis on the individual in Berea, Shaun Smith is unfortunately the first casualty of the Eric Mangini regime. While Smith's release seems to be the most natural move Mangini could have made in the early weeks of August, the symbolism of his departure speaks volumes about where this team is headed, and where it has been."

It must have thought he was still playing under Romeo's rules had thought that he could run his mouth whenever he wanted.

Cleveland Browns sign OL Weary
by Mary Kay Cabot
Sunday August 09, 2009, 12:37 PM

The Cleveland Browns today signed offensive lineman Fred Weary, the team announced.

Originally drafted in the third round (66th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, Weary has started in 43 of the 63 games in which he has appeared during his seven-year career (2002-2008), all at right guard.
The 6-4, 307-pound Weary was a four-year letterman (1998-2001) at Tennessee where he earned All-American and All-Southeastern Conference first-team honors as a senior. Born September 30, 1977, the Montgomery, Ala., native attended Robert E. Lee (Montgomery, Ala.) High School.

I understand what you are saying but Mangini must be fairly pleased with his depth at DL or I do not think they would have released Smith. They are counting on one of their guys that they drafted last year to play some at NT. Plus there is still plenty of time to pick up some guys if needed.

Poor Syndric.

Did Romeo not require them to practice in the rain? Fucking excuses.

And of course it never rains in Cleveland on gameday or anything...

To be fair (just to keep in mind), this is his dipshit agent, not him, saying this stuff...

Could be, I just worry we are short on guys who are going to know what they are doing, and Rogers needs some help...all NFL teams seem to run much more of a DL rotation during a game than an OL rotation, so all things being equal, we need some quality bodies there after releasing Comrade Mouth...

I think we'll be just fine without Sean Smith. His personal issues aside, I thought he was a decent player who could be plugged in a rotational role. Considering he played in a standard 43 defense at South Carolina and for the Bengals, he adapted pretty well to the 34 in Cleveland. I always thought he at least showed some solid effort and intensity while he was on the field on game days.

We should be pretty strong with a rotation of Shaun Rogers, Kenyon Coleman, CJ Mosley, Corey Williams, and Ahtyba Rubin. Robaire Smith will be a solid veteran if he can make it back 100% from his achilles injury. I think Mangini and Kokinis will certainly be looking at another free agent to fill Smith's spot at some point, if they don't already have someone in mind. Otherwise a guy such as Louis Leonard, Santonio Thomas, or Melila Purcell just may get there chance to remain on the active roster.

Regardless of depth, I'm glad the Browns finally have a HC and GM that see that it's not a good idea to keep around a guy who took a swing at your probably starting QB.

Oh I don't disagree at all with dropping Smith...I'd just like to see a quality DE replace him on the roster. I'm not sold on the Jets guys.

So, do we have any idea if the game vs GB will be on air? Or even a live stream perhaps?
I know that STO will have a delayed telecast of it but can't remember day and time. WCMH carried their preseason games last year don't know if they will be doing that this year are or not.

Sean Smith's biggest mistake was not only taking a swipe at Quinn but also talking back to Bryan Cox--very bad idea.

The Browns signed free agent first-year receiver Edward Williams Tuesday and waived/injured Syndric Steptoe, who suffered a torn labrum in practice on Saturday...

Saw today the Shaun Smith was running his mouth today too. He sure has a lot to say for somebody whose entire career has consisted of getting passed around among all of the shittiest teams in the league from the past decade. Have fun in Detroit, asshole.

Summer camp has closed and I, for one, love it. They may not win games pretty, but I have a sneaky suspicion this team's gonna be a lot better this year.

Hell, they may not even win games, but I don't think they'll look as shitty in the process, and that's all I'm really hoping for this year.
