Cleveland Browns lose Jason Wright to Cardinals

CLEVELAND -- Browns running back and special teams core player Jason Wright has agreed to a two-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals for about $2 million.

Wright will replace J.J. Arrington, who signed with Denver, as the Cardinals' third-down back. The Arizona coaches believe Wright will be an upgrade in pass protection and on special teams.

"It's just a great opportunity for Jason to go to a team that went to the Super Bowl last year," agent Mike McCartney said. "We feel Arizona is a good fit for him."

The Browns did make an offer to retain Wright, McCartney said.

Wright's rushing totals were down last year (23 carries, 85 yards) as the Browns gave more opportunities to Jerome Harrison and Josh Cribbs. But the blitz-pickup specialist still participated in more than 30 percent of the offensive snaps in 2008.

Wright also had 22 catches and was a regular on most of the special teams.

"Jason leaves with tremendous feelings about the Browns," McCartney said.

Cleveland Browns visit with another offensive lineman
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Sunday March 15, 2009, 10:47 PM

CLEVELAND -- John St. Clair, a 10-year veteran offensive lineman with three NFL teams, will visit the Browns on Monday, a source said.

St. Clair, 31, started 16 games at left tackle for the Chicago Bears in 2008. They wanted to bring him back as a backup and offered him $4 million over three years last month. St. Clair publicly has said he wants to stay with the Bears but he has not acted on the team's offer.

St. Clair, who is 6-5 and 315 pounds, has 55 starts in 107 career games with the Bears, Dolphins and Saints. He has also started at right tackle and guard.

The Browns on Friday signed Seattle free agent lineman Floyd "Pork Chop" Womack. They also released right tackle Kevin Shaffer.
maybe he can play running back or WR:(

St. Clair could very well end up starting at RT if Tucker goes shithouse crazy again.

I do like the idea of pork-chop or st. clair at the RG spot therey moving Hadnot to center so old honeybuns can rightfully take his spot on the bench.

as for jason wright, this gets harrison on the field more, so it's not a bad thing, and it's probably not a stretch to assume cleveland will be drafting a rb.

Browns target Orakpo

By Carlos "Big C" Holmes | Tuesday, March 17, 2009, 12:02 AM
The Cleveland Browns have the fifth overall selection in this year?s NFL draft and will likely use that pick to upgrade the team?s pass-rush. The Browns defense finished the 2008 season tied next to last in the sack category with 17.

Nearly every mock draft on the internet have the Browns taking Texas stud defensive end Brian Orakpo with the team?s first round pick. Well, they may be onto something.
Members of the Browns organization will be in Texas Wednesday March 18, for a private workout session with Orakpo.
Orakpo is the draft?s premiere pass-rusher and comes with a lot of hardware winning the Nagurski Trophy (nation?s top defensive player), Lombardi Award (nation?s top lineman) and Hendricks Award (nation?s top defensive end) in 2008.
Orakpo?s Pro Day workout is scheduled for March 25, but the Browns want a close-up look at the fierce pass-rusher.

Updated at 9:15 p.m.

CLEVELAND -- The Browns have confirmed the signing of Bears free agent offensive lineman John St. Clair.

Brad Briggs of the Chicago Sun-Times reported the Browns gave St. Clair a three-year contract worth $9 million.

St. Clair, who visited the Browns on Monday, was offered about one-half that total value in a three-year deal from the Bears.

St. Clair made 16 starts at left tackle for the Bears last year and also has started at right tackle and guard in his nine-year career with Chicago, the Dolphins and Rams.

The Browns have not confirmed the signing. Messages to Ben Dogra, St. Clair's agent, were not immediately returned.

Is today the day we will find out if the Jets are going to match the offer sheet for Abram Elam?

Cleveland Browns won't be adding Jets safety Abram Elam
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Tuesday March 17, 2009, 3:37 PM

CLEVELAND -- The New York Jets have thwarted the Browns' attempt to sign another one of coach Eric Mangini's former players.

A league source confirmed the Jets officially have matched the Browns' one-year offer sheet to safety Abram Elam, a restricted free agent.

The Browns' offer of $1.5 million was just $450,000 more than the Jets' minimum tender offer they placed on Elam to reserve their right to match.
The Jets view Elam as a versatile safety who can contribute in a backup or rotational role if he does not start.

The Browns wanted Elam to compete for the starting job vacated by the loss of Sean Jones in free agency. Jones signed with Philadelphia.
the Browns spent her be looking for a safety for somewhere else because that is a serious steps issue amongst other positions.

i think with 2 2nd round picks, and the top rated safeties in this draft projected to go in the early/mid 2nd, that drafting a safety seems like a fairly likely scenario.

louis delmas at #36 is pretty good value.

So with the signing of St. Clair, you think that Hadnot will be moved to the starting center position and Fraley will take a seat. I thought that I read a couple years ago when he was signed by the Browns and then he was an excellent "signal" caller. I know that he is like for a center but...

I like Harrison also but when it comes down to third and 2 and Lewis has an ankle injury we better have another RB who can get the short yardage.

The Browns seem to be set at the OL so I guess that just leaves a RB, WR, a couple LB's and DB's. What say you:huh: do you see any other needs that neither addressed.

hadnot did start around 20 games at center for miami from the end of '05 through '06 before starting 16 games at RG in '07. so, i'd say cleveland is probably set along the OL.

obviously safety and wr are 2 big issues. LB is of course an issue. RB can be considered a concern as well.

A first day of the draft that consists of orakpo/curry, and delmas and robiskie is about as solid as it gets.

i'm still not convinced that cleveland is done in FA as well.

Never heard of the guy. Maybe our squealer's friend Nutty remembers him from his days in Pittspuke. Sounds like a special-teams guy to me.

by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Wednesday March 18, 2009, 3:07 PM

CLEVELAND -- Two days after losing third-down back Jason Wright, the Browns signed Tampa Bay free agent running back Noah Herron.

Herron, 26, was a seventh-round draft pick of the Steelers in 2005 and has also played for Green Bay and Tampa Bay.

Herron, 5-11 and 225 pounds, has rushed for 273 yards and three touchdowns in 23 career games.

Coincidentally, Herron was a college teammate of Wright's at Northwestern from 2001 to '04.
