Cleveland Browns (2008 Season)

Crashcup;1104777; said:
The Browns are another shining example of a sham of Cleveland pro franchises scamming the hard working people of NE Ohio betting on the come.

Every pro franchise in every other city eventually spends the dollars to provide the carrot. Not any of Clevelands despicable owners are going to part with one red cent, but they will gladly take yours in order to keep you waiting for next year and do it to you again!

You think the owners of all these teams got to where they are by being completely inept.

I don't even live there but they did it to me for 40 years.

What the hell are you talking about? Phil Savage is one of the best GM's and they are very active in FA and spending money. Having some idea what you're talking about will help you in the future...

Also, don't forget about Dan Gilbert of the Cavs who just took on a $13 million dollar salary cap hit to bring in some help for LeBron. The Cavs now have one of the five highest payrolls in the NBA.

I wasn't at the game in Cinci, but comparing the performance of the two passers Carson Palmer and DA on that day with their Week 2 game, something happened.

Week 2 Bengals at Browns;

C.Palmer 33 of 50, 401yds. 6tds 2 ints 113.4 pass eff. rating

Anderson 20 of 33 328yds 5tds 1 int. 121 pass eff. rating

Week 16 Browns at Bengals

C.P. 11 of 21 115 yards 1 td 2 int. 44.8 eff. rating (Lowest of his season)

D.A. 29 of 48 251 yards 2 td 4 int. 53.4 eff. rating (lowest of his season)

I wasn't on the field but can only surmise with the Browns staff that the late season drop in performance level of DA were weather related or defenses catching up with offensive schemes.

I'd say it was mostly weather-related but maybe he was also showing his YOUTH. It was Anderson's first go round in a playoff atmosphere and he came up short. He's a young guy, and is basically coming off of a rookie season.

Maybe we should just get C.C. Sabathia's ass out of town since he had a bad post-season. He must not be talanted either.

I was at that game in Cincinnati. The weather contriubuted, but only insofar as Derek Anderson made decisions that he shouldn't have been making with the weather being what it was. In my book, the weather is not an excuse. These guys (players and coaches) are supposed to be professionals. It is their responsibility to handle a situation like the one in Cincy, and they all responded poorly. The coaches made poor decisions to be aggressive in poor conditions with poor field position and little time left at the end of that first half. Derek Anderson made poor decisions throwing the football. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. He was essentially a rookie QB, and I think he stands a good chance of learning from those mistakes and making better decisions in pressure situations as he evolves into a veteran QB.

What am I talking about...not a damn thing the proof is in the pudding. So I am truly the one who knows what's really going.

Sticking up for the best POS's in the land won't change a thing.

Besides, Savage isn't an owner but a pawn.

So the Browns didn't spend a shit load of money last year getting Lewis, Steinbach, Smith, Peak, or Thomas? They didn't go 10-6 this year and barely miss the playoff's? That isn't a huge improvement?

Congratulations...you now sound like the world's dumbest human being.

ROGERS TO BROWNS A DONE DEAL
According to Hondo Carpenter of SpartanNation.com, who as we understand it is very well plugged in as to the goings on in Motown, the Lions have finalized a trade of defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to the Browns.
In return, the Lions reportedly will get cornerback Leigh Bodden and a third-round draft choice.
Carpenter says that the league office rejected a trade that would have sent Rogers to the Bengals for a third-round and a fifth-round pick.

The Lions were going to accept a 3rd & a 5th from the Bengals and the Browns are going to give up a 3rd and Leigh Bodden? Huh? I realize that the Bengals 3rd is a little higher but there's no way Leigh Bodden is only worth a 5th rounder.

mixed feelings

I do believe a very good D-line magically makes average cover guys All Pro...
but even All Pro cover guys are shitty... if there is a bad line

All starts up front... on BOTH sides of the ball

doesnt say Cleveland but the NFL network is saying Cleveland and Rogers right now.

Rogers-to-Bengals trade starting to unravel

no mixed feelings here at all. Rogers has the talent to be a pro bowler every year the only question now is his dedication. Between Romeo and the Dline coach motivating this guy I think it could be a win-win for both Rogers and the Browns.

So much for not making a splash in FA, I for one like the sound of their potential D-line.

Go Browns!!!

Feb 29 Notes from Savage presser
Friday 02-29-2008 8:27pm ET
Browns GM Phil Savage met with the media late Friday evening to explain his first two deals of free agency. Here are some notes from the press conference.

- Savage said that Corey Williams is officially a Brown, as he traded a 2nd round pick to Green Bay for the defensive lineman.

- The reason he was willing to trade away his 2nd round pick is because he did not believe that he could get a defensive lineman good enough in the 2nd round

- Williams will be used at left or right end in the 3-4 set, and he will move inside on passing downs when the Browns use a 4 man front.

- Savage had 3 objectives coming into free agency and they were to sign Jamal Lewis, sign Derek Anderson, and to find a defensive lineman.

- With that said Savage feels good about what he was able to do in day 1.

- With Anderson, Savage said that he was not interested in late 1st or 3rd round picks for Anderson.

- Therefore he never tried to trade Anderson; he worked through the night getting the deal done with Anderson?s agents.

- In keeping Anderson, Savage feels that this secures the Browns QB position for now and the future.

- At some point and time Savage said they will have to choose between Anderson and Brady Quinn. But now is not the time.

- Also stated that there will be no open competition for the QB job, that Anderson is the man in 08.

- And Savage ended the conference saying ?we are not trading Derek Anderson in 08.? Then he was asked what about Quinn and he stated neither will be traded.

Even more than the news of the actual signings and trades themselves (none of which I have a problem with in the least) hearing Savage speak on the direction of the franchise is very reassuring. For the first time since they returned to the league, I feel like the Browns are on a mission - that there is a definite vision, they are executing it, and they are headed in the right direction.

As a fan, all this trading makes the draft a lot less interesting. I look at it this way though: While everybody else is drafting college players, the Browns are using their draft picks on NFL players. These are players that are ready and able to contribute now. And besides, when your franchise is historically horrible/snakebitten when it comes to the draft, I guess the best approach is to not participate in the draft.

a quick look at the defensive linemen on the 2007 roster:

minus roye and simon

96Hamilton, Bobby DL 6-5 285 07/01/1971 13 Southern Miss
78Kelley, Ethan DL 6-2 338 02/12/1980 3 Baylor
93Leonard, Louis DL 6-4 330 07/16/1984 R Fresno State
97Pittman, Chase DL 6-5 275 05/15/1983 R LSU
60Purcell, Melila DL 6-5 285 02/05/1984 R Hawaii
73Smith, Alvin DL 6-2 307 06/16/1982 1 Oregon State
98Smith, Robaire DL 6-4 320 11/15/1977 8 Michigan St.
91Smith, Shaun DL 6-2 325 08/19/1981 4 South Carolina
92Washington, Ted DL 6-5 375 04/13/1968 17 Louisville
79West, Zach DL 6-5 305 04/27/1984 R UTEP

Plenty of young guys for depth and Robaire Smith had a very solid season starting all 16 games - 64 total tackles (39 solo) 4 sacks and 3 TFL.

Smith Rogers Williams  sounds good to me.

It sounds good indeed. A bunch of us have been saying it here for months, but it bears repeating: Upgrading the defensive line make the entire defense better. It frees up the linebackers to make plays, and decreases the amount of time the DBs have to cover. These moves could end up making a world of difference for the Browns.

Phil = :bow:

If a motivated Shaun Rogers shows up along with Williams, we just went from a very bad DL to a very good one. I'm liking this offseason so far. People doubted Savage at times, but I've said all along he's one of the best personnel men in the NFL. He's proving it with the past two offseasons. I'm getting very excited about next season.
