Company for Baxter's misery
Former player who suffered same injury visits training camp

BEREA: Wendell Davis and Gary Baxter share the same strange fate, suffering two torn patellar tendons in an NFL game.
But Davis, a Chicago Bears receiver, never played again after going down on the Veterans Stadium turf in Philadelphia in 1993, retiring after the 1995 season. Baxter, a Browns cornerback-turned-safety, is still trying to make an unprecedented comeback from his 2006 injury.
The two met Thursday when Davis came to participate in a two-day apprentice program started by Browns General Manager Phil Savage. Now owner of a barbershop franchise in Chicago and mentoring high school students, Davis, who was a first-round pick, is trying to return to the NFL in a player development or scouting role.

I guess Hall from little St. Augustine's is starting to turn a few heads. That would be very nice but I think he has to bulk a little to make the roster but I would watch out for him next year.

Just saw this and wanted Browns fans opinion on it. Terry Glenn(coming off of knee injury) has been released by the Cowboys. What does anyone think about possibly bringing him in for 1 year to at least compete for the #3 wide reciever spot? Personally as long as he cleared waivers I think it would be a hell of an addition to an already good WR group. Hell they could, in theory, line up Lewis in the backfield with Winslow at TE and Braylon, Stallworth, and Glenn at WR. Good luck finding enough CB's to cover that group and stopping Jamal Lewis at the same time. Just something I thought about.

There is also another WR who was recently released by San Diego who is pretty good and already knows Chud's offense. I think if they go after a veteran WR they probably would go after him but I would not mind seeing Terry Glenn, with his speed, in a Browns uniform. I guess it will all boil down to the money he wants.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. We all know that WR isn't really a position to worry about but I figured CB is and right now it looks like we are stuck with what we have for good or bad. I figure what better way to protect a young secondary than make it easier for your offense to score by adding another weapon. It's not a perfect strategy but if our offense scores 40pts a game by adding more weapons offensively that's just more room for error that our young secondary has. Thanks for the input and GO BROWNIES!

Browns morning practice notes, July 26th

* Kellen Winslow sat out practice to rest his surgically-repaired right knee. "That's a coach's choice about Winslow,'' said Crennel. "He could've practiced but I held him out to try to rest him a little bit, and then this afternoon, he should be able to go. He's not happy about it, but he understands what I'm trying to get done and he works with it.''

* Crennel said he'll do the same during tonight's session with Willie McGinest, who underwent back surgery last season and is 36. "We have to manage these guys to try to keep them as healthy as we can,'' said Crennel.

* Tight end Steve Heiden twisted a knee and Seth McKinney twisted an ankle. Both were taken in to be examined by the medical staff. Their status for the evening practice is unknown.

* Receiver Donte Stallworth (hamstring) was back in full pads and participated in individual drills, but no team sets. He said he's closer to being ready but provided no timetable for his return. He stayed on top of things by listening in in the huddle.

Would depend on his asking price. He's getting up there in years and has injury problems of his own. Not likely.

In a move expected for a number of weeks, the Chargers released WR Eric Parker Wednesday.

Parker had spent his entire career in San Diego, signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2002. After being a key contributor to the club from 2004-06, he missed the entire '07 season with a foot injury and, given the team's array of young wideouts, was deemed expendable this summer.

Parker's agent has been in talks with potential suitors for his client for some time now, so the veteran receiver should have a new home soon. The Browns have been mentioned as a possible destination.

In 62 career games, Parker has 187 catches for 2,586 yards and 11 TDs.

I realize that Parker is nothing special but he is a veteran and knows the Browns system. Without JJ I think we might need another veteran WR if the price is right. I know we have greater needs in the DB area which I would like to see upgraded with a veteran edition but it just depends on the price.

I see no reason we can't talk to Dallas about giving up our 1st and 3rd round picks for him... or another deal.
Savage seems to have quite the love affair going on in Texas.

BEREA, Ohio -- The air horn sounds to end the warm-up and 80 players break into their position groups on one of the four fields at the Cleveland Browns training facility on Thursday morning.
One group heads past the sideline toward a construction vehicle outfitted as a blocking sled: the defensive linemen. Some of the members, especially the new ones, look almost as big as the piece of machinery they line up against, and that's the idea.
The Browns decided to fix the league's third-most porous defense by raiding the NFC North for 6-foot-4, 350-pound Shaun Rogers and 6-foot-4, 320-pound Corey Williams in the offseason.
The two behemoths, acquired through trades with Detroit and Green Bay, respectively, signed six-year deals with Cleveland days apart in February and March.

For decades, the Browns' offensive line was a source of neglect, derision, embarrassment and real pain to quarterbacks.
If the line is the foundation of a football offense, if not the entire team, then the eternally crumbling state of the Browns' five-man offensive front explains a lot of losing.
From 1970 through 2006, the Browns used a first-round draft pick on an offensive tackle exactly one time.

Cleveland Browns safety Sean Jones hoping for big pay day

Safety Sean Jones, in the final year of his contract, is seeking a multiyear extension that would enable him to finish his career in Cleveland.
But Jones has played so well the past two seasons, he might be too expensive to retain. What's the going rate for a top-notch safety these days? More than $6 million a year. That's what former Giants safety Gibril Wilson received from the Raiders on the first day of free agency when he inked a blockbuster six-year deal worth $39 million, including about $16 million guaranteed.
What's more, Jones, who's set to make $2.145 million this season, has better numbers than Wilson over the past two seasons. Jones has five interceptions and more than 100 tackles in each of his past two years as a starter.
