Knee injuries slowing expected return of Cleveland Browns receiver Joe Jurevicius

Thursday, July 24, 2008
Joe Jurevicius' status for the season is up in the air, Browns General Manager Phil Savage said Wednesday.
Jurevicius (knee) and offensive lineman Ryan Tucker (hip) were both placed on the active/physically unable to perform list, where they will remain until after the first cut to 75 on Aug. 26, Savage said.
When asked if he'll have them both for the season, Savage sounded more optimistic about Tucker than Jurevicius, who's undergone four surgeries in the off-season, including three to remove staph from the scoped knee.

Browns training camp: Anderson still the man
But Quinn is biding his time, preparing to play this season

BEREA What Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson said Wednesday didn't dispel the notion the former takes work more seriously than the latter.

On the other hand, Anderson checked into the first day of Browns training camp showing signs he's getting up earlier.

The temporarily chosen one responded to a report that his heightened fitness routine has left him with a six-pack of abs.

Characteristically off the wall, Anderson glanced at his gut and replied, "Four-and-a-half."

A month past his 25th birthday, Anderson has a chance to grow into a playoff-style quarterback good enough to keep a hot property like Quinn on the bench.

Could this be the Browns' year?
Thursday, July 24, 2008

BEREA On the first day of training camp, the Browns practiced celebrating with their fans.

Two-a-days start today, but Day One was stopped for smelling the roses. A soothing summer breeze blew in. The smell of success laced the fresh football air.

After just an hour of light practice, Head Coach Romeo Crennel huddled his men and sent all 78 of them to the gallery ropes to sign autographs.

Some fans got Kellen Winslow and Brady Quinn. Others got Melila Purcell and Brad Cieslak.

Everybody along a crowded 300-yard perimeter got a piece of the hottest team in Cleveland, expected to bring the most satisfying results in an expansion era entering its 10th season.

Pro Bowl wideout Braylon Edwards set the tone, running to a group of fans ahead of the pack. His arrival prompted a spontaneous outburst of woofing and, for whatever reason, "Pittsburgh sucks."

Running back Jamal Lewis seemed to have a good old time.

Savage containing his enthusiasm
Browns notebook

BEREA The Browns are back, but the boss isn't stepping on the gas pedal.

"There's excitement," General Manager Phil Savage said as training camp began, "but it's a little bit subdued, because we know we need to be excited Sept. 7."

That's the day the Browns play host to Dallas, a much bigger media darling than even they have become.

The first preseason game kicks off two weeks from today, against the Jets. Taking the next step with an offense that broke out in 2007 will be a focal point.

Everybody talks about finding more time for electrifying running back Jerome Harrison, and camp is the time to sort through such issues.

"He's an exciting player," Savage said, "but how do you get 80 balls to Braylon (Edwards) and Kellen (Winslow) and then 20 touches or more per game to Jamal Lewis and still factor Jerome Harrison into the mix?

"There's a balance, but."

Optimism reigns at Browns' camp
Cleveland chic pick for playoff run
ASSOCIATED PRESS
BEREA, Ohio - On coach Romeo Crennel's whistle, the Cleveland Browns sprinted across the field en masse as hundreds of fans dressed in various shades of brown and orange hooted and hollered as if they had just witnessed a Derek Anderson-to-Braylon Edwards touchdown pass. As training camp officially opened, a loud air horn pierced the air. Moments later, an unexpected chant rose from the aluminum bleachers ringing Cleveland's practice fields. "Su-per Bowl! Su-per Bowl!" went the cry.

Browns receiver Braylon Edwards, a favorite target of Derek Anderson last season, signs autographs for fans after practice at the team's training camp.

BEREA, Ohio -- Twice during the Browns' opening practice of training camp yesterday, orange-and-brown-clad supporters serenaded players with everyone's preferred destination for the upcoming season. "Su-per Bowl! Su-per Bowl!"
Seemingly spooked by their own sound of two words that for once represent a possibility instead of an improbability, autograph seekers let the chorus die out after fewer than 20 seconds each time. A comforting refrain took its place:
"Pittsburgh sucks! Pittsburgh sucks!"

I'll save Browns a bunch of money. (FIWI I believe the Bengals are probably a bigger train wreck)

Why was Cleveland so good last season?

Worst Records in the NFL

1. Miami
2.Saint Louis
4.Oakland
6. Jets
7. San Francisco
8. Baltimore x 2 Games
9. Cincinnati x 2 Games

I can't prove it yet but I haven't a found a team in NFL history that's played more games against the 10 worst teams in the leagues. The Browns cleaned up by playing bad teams. 4 games against teams with a winning record and 2 of them were the Steelers. No joke this was one of the easiest schedules in NFL history.

This year you open with the Cowboys and Steelers at home. Go on the road for 2 in the division against Baltimore and the Bengals. Come home against the Giants and then face the Redskins and Jaguars on the road. The Browns season will be over at that point.

Last season was last season and a win is a win:)

I know you are not a Browns fan but I think you have to look at our team and see that we have made some major upgrades during the off-season and if you look at some unbiased web sites you will see that the Browns OL is rated as one of the top 5 in the NFL. I do not think that you can call Lewis a bad running back or Edwards and Winslow bad receivers. I know they you did not state that in your post but you sort of insinuated that by saying that the Brown season will be over halfway through it.
My only area of concern for the Browns is solidifying the cornerback position but I think with our improvement upfront that will help in our pass coverage.

I think you need to step away from the jungle:frown2: and look at the Browns objectively.

Browns defensive line doesn't worry you? I like the skill position people for the Browns but looking at how bad last years schedule was you're not worried? My boss is a huge Browns fan and thinks because they played the Steelers and Pats tough that proves they're good. This is was one of the worst schedules in NFL history. I have no doubt the Browns will beat up at midseason and dawgdom will demand Anderson's carcass in sacrifice.

Don't get me wrong I think the Bengals will have a winning season in the next 20 years.
