Cleveland Browns (2008 Season)

LitlBuck;1194965; said:
I think what also Pluto was saying in that article that the Browns need a big year from Lewis because they really don't have a backup power RB. Harrison and Wright are not really power runners such as Lewis.

I think if Lewis went down Vickers would be a pretty decent option as a power back. With him as the power back, Wright as the combo back and Harrison as a speed back I think the running game would be competent considering they have one of the best lines in the NFL.

Lets hope it would never come to that. Vickers is a blocking FB...nothing more, nothing less. Harrison has the skill to be a nice change-of-pace back but is too small to take the beatings as an every down player. Wright has never shown anything other than being a decent backup. Our line is good, but the Browns need a talented back to keep defenses honest to open up the bread and butter passing game. This isn't a Broncos type of system where you can essentially plug in a warm body and get a 1,000 yeard rusher.

Browns cornerback vows return from knee surgery
Monday, June 30, 2008
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CLEVELAND Browns cornerback Daven Holly is confident he'll bounce back from major knee surgery next season ? and be better than ever.

Holly, 25, was hurt when he jumped for a ball with receiver Braylon Edwards during practice on May 21.

"I know fans have been wondering how serious this is and whether or not I'll be back," Holly said. "But I expect to make a full recovery with no loss of speed or strength. A delay is not a denial. I'll come back better, stronger, faster and more mature than before."

Holly, a fourth-year pro, said he must have overextended his leg because when he hit the ground, it buckled. Holly crumpled in pain and knew it was serious because of the impact, but he didn't think it was season-ending.

While Vickers was a decent running back in college but I think he has put on too much weight to make him an effective RB with the Browns. The Browns had opportunities last year to spot duty him in the one-back set but never did so. If something happens to Lewis, I think Wright would get first shot but perhaps Scott will come through during camp as Buckin mentioned at the top of the page.

Improved Quinn could result in an even better Anderson

It's no stretch to think that if Brady Quinn (10) makes great strides in training camp this summer, Browns starting QB Derek Anderson (3) will be forced to improve his game, too.

Even after four decades of covering the NFL, I have learned that I should never think I know everything.
A case in point is making rash judgments about teams and players during minicamps. A year ago, because of the increasing importance of minicamps, I hit practices of the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns on back-to-back days. I watched Bills quarterback J.P. Losman and marveled as he resembled Kurt Warner in his St. Louis Rams heydey. I also watched three Browns quarterbacks resemble members of the "Bad News Bears" baseball team.
Losman ended up losing his starting job, and Derek Anderson emerged from the Bad News Browns' minicamp to throw 29 touchdown passes and have a Pro Bowl season. Lesson learned? Accept minicamps for what they are, test laboratories for new schemes and new techniques, particularly when viewing offenses.
I offer these thoughts in sizing up some of the young quarterbacks I've seen in minicamps this spring. Green Bay Packers rookie quarterback Brian Brohm is going through a tough learning curve. Young quarterbacks learning a new system think before they throw and temporarily lose their instincts. Bad days outnumber good days, so, other than there being no question strong-armed Aaron Rodgers won't be challenged for his starting job early, making longterm judgments would be foolish.
That brings us to the subject of Brady Quinn, the Notre Dame quarterback who fell into the Browns' lap. With no games on the line in June, it's impossible to say how ready he is to be an NFL starter. But if work ethic means anything, Quinn is closer to Tom Brady than he is Jonathan Quinn.

That article makes me very excited for this upcoming season and seasons there after. Its nice to actually have something look forward to with the Browns. Its been a long time coming since the team leaving then coming back and seeing so horrible since 1999.

I did not really like Quinn when we picked him coming from ND but his work ethic sounds like he is going to make himself into a decent quarterback.

Thank you Phil Savage for getting this franchise turned around.

Browns' Jurevicius has second surgery Receiver may be late to training camp
Published on Wednesday, Jul 02, 2008
From Beacon Journal wire services

Browns wide receiver Joe Jurevicius had his second knee surgery since January on Monday, a procedure that could prevent him from reporting to training camp on time.
Jurevicius had swelling and discomfort in his knee related to his first operation, and the club said in a statement released Tuesday that he had a further ''clean out'' on Monday to help him recover. The team said no determination has been made on Jurevicius' status for training camp, which opens July 23.
The 33-year-old had 50 catches for 614 yards and three touchdowns last season.

Jurevicius has fourth surgery on right knee

Wednesday, July 02, 2008
From staff reports
Browns wide receiver Joe Jurevicius has undergone a fourth surgical procedure on his right knee and his status for training camp is in question.
Jurevicius, a Chardon native, had the first surgery to clean up previous damage in the knee following last season. He had two more surgical procedures to treat a staph infection.
In a team news release, the Browns did not disclose the nature of the most recent surgery. The release said he had experienced "ongoing swelling and discomfort in his knee" and "had a further clean-out to help him in his recovery and control his symptoms."

Browns' Josh Cribbs still looking for more
Keeps setting high standards
Wednesday, July 2, 2008
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA There's an inevitable difference between the shape of Joshua Cribbs' ego and, say, Braylon Edwards'.

One marched through Michigan hearing the world tell him what a great NFL star he would be. One trekked through Kent State constantly being reminded he wouldn't be an NFL quarterback ? even if he found an NFL job.

Now they are fourth-year teammates whose last game together was the Pro Bowl.

The difference in their paychecks is along the lines of CEO vs. office manager.

Only the staunchest Cribbs supporter would argue he means as much to the Browns as Edwards.

After all, jersey No. 17 (Edwards) scored 16 touchdowns in 2007.

Jersey No. 16 (Cribbs) would have had just five even if two hadn't been called back by penalties.

Browns report
Wednesday, July 2, 2008
REPOSITORY STAFF REPORT

Jurevicius has more surgery

The Browns can function and probably even field an elite offense without Joe Jurevicius. They might have to.

An e-mail issued by Bill Bonsiewicz, who is in charge of the Browns' communications department, detailed a setback for the veteran wide receiver:

"In the process of his recovery and preparation for the upcoming season, Browns wide receiver Joe Jurevicius has had ongoing swelling and discomfort in his knee. Joe had a further clean out to help him in his recovery and control his symptoms. The procedure was performed late yesterday at the Cleveland Clinic. No determination has been made on Joe's status for training camp, which opens July 23."

Jurevicius already was recovering from aryhroscopic knee surgery and a subsequent staph infection.

Quinn set for fundraiser

Browns quarterback Brady Quinn will be the special guest at a tailgate party for the Granted Wish Foundation's annual fundraiser from 7-10 p.m. July 19 at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Big guys, big changes in AFC North?

Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
06.30.2008

It wouldn't be much of a stretch to say that Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers are the biggest additions any AFC North team made this offseason.
Physically. Figuratively. In potential impact. The list goes on, really.
The Browns hope Williams and Rogers will key a drastic turnaround in terms of stopping the run and use their physical gifts - both are quicker and more athletic than most men their size - to improve the pass rush as well.
The Browns also hope their presence will improve their edge rush, with opposing offenses unable to double-team Kamerion Wimbley on the edge and opposing quarterbacks unable to step up in the pocket when Wimbley comes free on the perimeter.

Cribbs and Wilson are really going to have to step it up this year if Joe is out for any length of time. Hubbard might even get some playing time if he can prove himself early.

Dispatch

The few weeks before training camp are normally quiet, but the Cleveland Browns seem poised to do something.
With receiver Joe Jurevicius recently having undergone his second knee surgery since January, earlier reports out of San Diego that Cleveland is interested in receiver/punt returner Eric Parker seem more credible.
After San Diego signed Mark Jones, who fits the same roles, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Parker would be traded or released by the start of camp. The Browns' connection was initially made because offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinksi was formerly the Chargers' tight ends coach.
