Cleveland Browns (2008 Season)

Strong spring energizes Wilson

Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
06.23.2008

So, you think you're excited for the start of training camp?
Travis Wilson knows the feeling.
And it's not just that the Browns sit on the brink of a season of high expectations, or that any receiver would light up at the thought of the possibilities this Browns offense may, well, light up the scoreboard this fall.
It's that Wilson believes it's time for him to prove he belongs in a talented receiving corps and become a productive player in this, his third NFL season.
A third-round pick in 2006, he played in just four games and caught 2 passes as a rookie. Last year, he was a gameday inactive on all 16 Sundays.

The best way to find a cornerback may be to find a team looking for a tight end or a fullback. Think about all the tight ends: Kellen Winslow, Steve Heiden, Martin Rucker and Darnell Dinkins. The Browns believe Dinkins has made a lot of progress, based on how he played in the organized team activities and minicamp
In this instance, I think Savage might be dreaming a little bit to think that Dinkins would bring us any type of quality CB in a trade. The same would be true of this thinking regarding trading Ali (who is now behind Vickers at FB). I just don't think other teams would be willing to give up a CB for a Browns backup but maybe that is why I am posting and not a GM in the NFL

Dinkins for a 5th string CB like Ashton Youboty could work. It just depends on where another team needs depth. Dinkins or Heiden are both capable back-up TE's. Is a second string TE worth a CB you may cut?

Wait until they cut him and then you won't have to trade Dinkins. I would not trade SH unless the CB was pretty good. We do not have that many blocking TE's. Rucker is not in that category and Winslow rarely fits it. I would let Ali go in a trade for a CB but not one of the other guys unless the CB was pretty decent. AY has had some problems in covering the past two seasons or Buffalo would have not drafted a CB.

Unless you know said CB is going to sign with you it's risky. Luckily, the Browns have a major opportunity available to any free agent CB, that it should be attractive. But a trade takes all guess work out. You own the rights to the player, you can't be out-bid by another team.

Some CBs will be released during preseason camps and I think that is what Savage will be looking at unless someone comes along with a deal that he cannot refuse.

I 100% agree with that, but if we can land a legitimate player for a 3rd string TE, I'm all for it.

CB depth is a major concern, TE depth is solid.

Plain Dealer Reporter
Browns cornerback Daven Holly vowed not only to return in 2009, but to come back from his major knee injury a better player and person.
"I know fans have been wondering how serious this is and whether or not I'll be back," said Holly in a phone interview. "But I expect to make a full re covery with no loss of speed or strength. A delay is not a denial. I'll come back better, stronger, faster and more mature than before."
Holly said tearing multiple knee lig aments is devastating, but it's a test of his faith and persever ance.

Cleveland Browns need another big season from running back Jamal Lewis to win, says The Plain Dealer's Terry Pluto

If Browns want to win, they'll need Jamal Lewis to excel

Sunday, June 29, 2008

ABOUT THE BROWNS . . .

Cendhead%%an running back Jamal Lewis do it again? Maybe not gain 1,304 yards. Maybe not have a season that should have earned him a Pro Bowl spot - he was fifth in the league in rushing. But can he gain more than 1,000 yards? Can he stay healthy? Can he remain the driven running back of 2007, now that he signed a three-year, $17 million contract? He has $7.5 million of that guaranteed. But the real bottom line is that for the Browns to be a playoff contender, Lewis must have something close to a repeat performance this season.

I don't see why lewis can't repeat if not better his numbers from last year.
Watching the interviews, the man has the drive and ability, coupled with a few more good years left in him.

Part of me has no doubt he can go for 1200+ yards; the other part of me knows he can get more because teams will have have to spend more energy focused on Braylon, KW2 and now the addition of Stallworth.

I'm excited to see what will happen.

I think what also Pluto was saying in that article that the Browns need a big year from Lewis because they really don't have a backup power RB. Harrison and Wright are not really power runners such as Lewis.

Agreed 100%. IMO the Browns will probably need to think about drafting out back of the future next year. I know Lewis just signed a 3 year deal but he may or may not last three years as he is getting old. If he can play well this year, we draft our future back next year and can use this player to give Lewis a breather than by that third year the new RB would be experienced enough to take over. Also to this point I like Wright more than Harrison because he has put up much better numbers. Harrison has unique skills as a fast change of pace player but he just doesn't get any time on the field.

With the depth and greatness of this offensive line, I'd like to see what Wright or Harrison can do before we draft our "future back".

Who knows - but great people up front can turn an average HB into a great one.

Maybe the Browns are looking at apower back already.

Kevin Jones went through a workout while four teams watched the running back sprint and cut five months after undergoing major knee surgery.

Dr. D.S. Ping, who has been helping Jones rehabilitate his right knee, said Miami, Green Bay, Pittsburgh and Detroit sent representatives to the workout in Saline, Mich.

The Lions cut their former first-round pick in March with one year left on his contract after he hurt the knee late last season.

The Cleveland Browns also called and asked for a video of the workout.
