Cleveland Browns confirm signing of Terry Cousin
by Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter
Friday May 23, 2008, 11:04 AM

The Browns made it official today by announcing that veteran cornerback Terry Cousin has been signed to a two-year contract.

Cousin, 5-9 and 185 pounds, has played for six teams in 11 seasons, the last three years with Jacksonville.

He is 33 and is expected to vie for the job of covering slot receivers in nickel defensive packages.

According to a team source, the Browns had scheduled Cousin for a visit even before Daven Holly suffered a season-ending knee injury at Tuesday's OTA practice. They moved it up a day and signed him Thursday night.

The Browns were interested in signing Cousin in 2006, but he opted to re-sign with Jacksonville.

Daven Holly blows out knee: Browns may woo Ty Law
UPDATE: 2:41 PM, Wednesday, May 21, 2008
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITERMultimedia

BEREA Browns cornerback Daven Holly "blew out his knee" in practice Tuesday, Head Coach Romeo Crennel said today.

General Manager Phil Savage said Holly's injury is "pretty serious" and indicated surgery will be performed Friday.

Savage said finding a cornerback to replace Holly becomes a top priority.
Both Crennel and Savage made it clear they would like to sign former Patriots All-Pro Ty Law, who is still on the market as a free agent.

However, Savage said signing Law is unlikely. He said the Browns have the salary cap room to bring in the veteran but are close to the edge of their limits in terms of cash expenditures.

Law is asking for a big signing bonus, which is where the cash comes in.
Holly was hurt when he collided in practice Tuesday with wideout Braylon Edwards, who came out of the exchange with a hip pointer.

Edwards' injury was not portrayed as serious, although he did miss today's practice.

Savage sounded skeptical about Gary Baxter being part of the solution.

Baxter was cleared for practice late last season after a long recovery from double patellar knee surgery.

Crennel said Baxter suffered a "re-injury" but was not specific other than to say Baxter has not been cleared to participate in spring practice

In the article referenced above, Savage does not rule out trying to trade for a veteran CB.

Browns Bell is the real deal

By Carlos "Big C" Holmes
Staff Writer

Monday, May 26, 2008

When the Cleveland Browns moved up to select UNLV LB Beau Bell with the team's first pick in the fourth-round of the draft, fans weren't quite sure what the team was getting.
There are mixed feelings about the pick, but for those fans who are still in the dark to the type of player Bell is, I turned to Perfect Competition, Inc. Founder and CEO Sean O'Brien to shed some light on the subject.
O'Brien spent several months with Bell, who trained at Perfect Competition leading up to the draft and knows the player well. The 6-foot-1, 245-pound linebacker went there to work on his overall football skills and worked his buns off looking to impress NFL scouts.
"Beau was brought into the program early in the draft process," O'Brien said. "He spent very little time with his family during the winter holidays and spent New Year's Day training preparing for the Senior Bowl. He's a very dedicated individual and believes in hard work."

Cleveland Browns OTAs winding down

Observations from the last voluntary offseason Browns practice open to the media ...

? New cornerback Terry Cousin made a good impression in his first visit with media. He's a great talker, smart and savvy about the give-and-take with the press. He's excited about landing with an up-and-coming team that can tap his experience as the inside cornerback in the nickel defense. On the field, he spent most of his time on the outside with the second unit. He'll move into the slot over time.

? It was a good practice for young cornerbacks. In red-zone drills, Damon Jenkins, a rookie from Fresno State, intercepted a Brady Quinn lob intended for Paul Hubbard in the right corner. A few moments later, Mil'Von James, the rookie from UNLV, broke up a Ken Dorsey pass for Lance Leggett in the left corner. For what it's worth, James is built a lot like Eric Wright, his former college teammate -- very strong legs.

? Efrem Hill, the receiver who caught Quinn's first touchdown pass in preseason last year before going down with an injury, made a good grab of a Quinn whistler and then did well to get both feet down just inside the end line.

? Regarding the quarterbacks, coach Romeo Crennel made a comment that will spur forum chatter. Speaking about Derek Anderson's increased confidence in his second season as the starter, the coach said, "There's no real competition he has to worry about." What he meant, of course, is that there is no "open competition" for the starting job, as there was a year ago.

Cleveland Browns cornerback Terry Cousin has plenty of experience

Thursday, May 29, 2008Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
In his prime, Terry Cousin was good enough to start 13 games at cornerback on the NFL's eighth-ranked defense for an NFC champion.
A calf injury took him out for three games, and by the time his surprise team made the Super Bowl, Cousin was still an integral defender covering slot receivers in nickel defenses.
The year was 2003. The team was Carolina. Cousin was 28.

Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner refutes report that he is going to reside in England

Thursday, May 29, 2008 Mary Kay Cabot

Plain Dealer Reporter
Browns owner Randy Lerner denied a report in the Manchester Guardian on Wednesday that he'll become CEO of his Aston Villa soccer team and establish a permanent residence in England.
In an e-mail response, Lerner said: "To clarify recent reports, I'm not becoming a permanent resident/citizen of the UK. I will not be changing the amount of time I spend with either the Browns or Aston Villa, nor will I be assuming the title or role of chief executive officer of Villa. The responsibilities of that position are currently spread among several people at the club and I am comfortable and confident continuing in that manner."
The paper, citing sources, reported that Lerner will assume the team's vacant CEO position and have a more active role in the running of the club. It also reported that Lerner will establish a permanent residence near Aston Villa, enabling him to have an increased role.

Browns' new corner is 'old' man in league
Cousin expects to tutor younger defensive backs
Thursday, May 29, 2008
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA His name is Terry Cousin, but call him big brother.

He's the Browns' new nickel back. With Willie McGinest absent from Wednesday's spring practice, he was the oldest defensive player on the field.

Among Browns cornerbacks, Cousin, 33, is grandpa.

Both 22-year-old starters, Eric Wright and Brandon McDonald, were in third grade when Cousin broke into the NFL as an undrafted rookie.

"I think that's good," Cousin said after running a few post-practice gassers. "They're hungry. They're eager to learn.

"Those guys are intelligent. They've been through an NFL season. It's not like they're running around with their heads cut off."

Cousin didn't arrive in Berea limping. He played in all 18 of the Jaguars' games last season, starting against New England in the playoffs.

He lingered on the free-agent market but was certain he would find work.

It came after the Browns lost Daven Holly to a knee injury.

Is LB Colvin in team's future?
Thursday, May 29, 2008
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Last spring, the Browns were bursting out all over at outside linebacker.

Kamerion Wimbley was coming off a big rookie year. Antwan Peek was an exciting addition. Veterans Willie McGinest, Chaun Thompson and Matt Stewart promised depth.

Now? Wimbley is coming off a lukewarm sophomore year. Peek confesses he played most of 2007 with a torn meniscus. McGinest is aging. Thompson and Stewart are gone.

It should be no surprise the team is monitoring the availability of free agent Rosevelt Colvin.

"We're always looking for good football players," Head Coach Romeo Crennel said. "I know Rosevelt personally. He's a good pro. He's a good player."

Colvin, who turns 31 two days before the Browns kick off the season against Dallas, played on Crennel's New England defense when the Patriots won their last two Super Bowls.

He has been a strong pass rusher with the Bears ? 101⁄2 sacks in both 2001 and '02 ? and the Patriots ? team sacks leader in 2005 and '06.

Savage seeing fruits of his labor
Thursday, May 29, 2008
BY JOE FROLLO
REPOSITORY SPORTS EDITOR

UNIONTOWN As OTAs wrap up this week in Berea, Phil Savage remembers the first time he watched the Cleveland Browns trot out for practice.

Just days after being named Browns general manager in January 2005, Savage stood next to T.J. McCreight, who came to Cleveland from Baltimore with Savage.

"After everyone filed out, T.J. leaned over and asked, 'Is that it?' " Savage said Wednesday during the Northeast Ohio Celebrity Luncheon Club meeting. "I said, 'Yep, T.J. The varsity ain't coming out after them.' "

A little more than three years later, Savage likes his roster a whole lot better.

"When I first got here and looked at what we had, I told someone I thought our long-snapper (Ryan Pontibrand) was about the best player at his specific skill," Savage told about 100 people at Prestwick Country Club during an event to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs. "Now, we look like a real NFL football team."

Savage ran down the Browns roster for the lunch crowd, saying quarterback Brady Quinn continues to impress every day, but incumbent starter Derek Anderson "is worth us investing another year to see how far he can go."

Random thoughts as the Browns workouts continue
by Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter
Thursday May 29, 2008, 2:30 PM

There are three more Browns voluntary practices left and five mandatory practices at minicamp in two weeks. Until then, these are our thoughts on how things are going:

? The offense doesn't need to be more prolific to be better. It has to be more consistent -- from game to game, but also from quarter to quarter. That rests primarily with the quarterback. It's impossible to judge whether consistency will improve until we get into the season. The preseason is not going to be an accurate barometer. It sure wasn't last year.

? You can't tell anything about the offensive line in offseason practices in shorts, but it appears that Rex Hadnot is fitting in seamlessly at right guard. The injury to Ryan Tucker hurts the team's depth at offensive tackle, which is important. If nothing else, Tucker's injury is giving Isaac Sowells much-needed time at both tackle spots. His days at guard appear over.

? It was good to hear Romeo Crennel give Travis Wilson some praise. You've got to believe that Wilson's confidence eroded during his first two NFL seasons. Crennel throws around plaudits like manhole covers. Wilson should be encouraged by the coach's words.

? Yes, Josh Cribbs is being incorporated more into the offense. Every time I see him out there, though, I lament the fact he wasn't converted into a third-down back instead of receiver. His blocking alone would save a few sacks a year on third downs.

? The Browns will exercise patience with rookie receiver Paul Hubbard because of his size and athletic ability. Their patience may be tested by his -- so far -- unreliable hands.

Anderson, Quinn trying to put finishing touches on Browns offense
UPDATE: 12:39 PM, Thursday, May 29, 2008
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA By August, the Browns intend to paint the finishing touches on a state-of-the-art offense.

As spring practice winds toward June, the brush is leaving splatters.

"C'mon, back in the huddle! Let's go!" Offensive Coordinator Rob Chudzinski barked after quarterback Derek Anderson dropped a snap from center Hank Fraley.

Anderson seemed choppy in this week's practice that was open to the media. He is running the first-string offense, such as it is with key players missing.

In one sequence, he misfired to tight end Darnell Dinkins on the left sideline, sailed another sideline throw way over wideout Travis Wilson's head, then underthrew wideout Dont? Stallworth, almost getting intercepted by safety Mike Adams.

After those three turkeys, though, Anderson fired a majestic strike to Wilson deep over the middle. It was one of those "wow" plays, which, if nothing else, reminded you Wilson's stock is rising.
