Cleveland Browns (2008 Season)

outside linebackers Kamerion Wimbley, Antwan Peek, Shantee Orr
I have never heard of this guy. I can't even remember him playing last year. I was wondering if anyone else remembered him from last year.

As for Bentley, his agent, Jonathan Feinsod, said Tuesday, "I guarantee LeCharles will play football in 2008."
What he didn't say was for whom. Before the St. Ignatius product can begin practicing with the Browns, he must pass their physical. The plan was for Bentley to get examined by his orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Russ Warren, in New York before undergoing the Browns exam. Feinsod would not say whether that has happened and declined further comment on Bentley's situation.
This is too bad. If there was one guy that I wanted to see make it as a Cleveland Brown, LeCharles was that guy. He was our first big free-agent signing and I think helped lure some other FAs to the Browns. From the sounds of that article, I just don't think he and the Browns are going to come to an agreement with regard to his passing a physical. In addition, his contract was renegotiated down to one year to the minimum for his position. There are incentives built in blow when the Browns picked up Hadnot I think that was the beginning of the end for Bentley in Cleveland. Hopefully, I will be wrong.

Cleveland Browns OTAs are off and running
by Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter
Wednesday May 14, 2008, 1:56 PM

Observations from the Browns organized team activity practice:

? On the very first play of team drills, the starting defensive front was Corey Williams, Shaun Smith and Robaire Smith. The inside linebackers were Andra Davis and Leon Williams because D'qwell Jackson was absent while honeymooning. The starting cornerbacks were Eric Wright and Daven Holly.

? Defensive lineman Shaun Rogers later conceded that he's going through a learning period at both nose tackle and end in the Browns' 3-4 system.

? Rookie draft picks and undrafted free agents can't participate in OTAs until May 16.

? Other players absent besides Jackson were Kellen Winslow, LeCharles Bentley and Kenny Wright. Winslow's absence could be a precursor to a contract dispute. Other players not fully healthy to participate -- Steve Heiden, Joe Jurevicius and Gary Baxter -- were in the facility working with trainers.

? Defensive lineman Shaun Rogers is wearing No. 92. With all the concern about his weight, Rogers looks a lot more svelte than the previous player wearing that number, Ted Washington. Actually, Rogers looks a lot better than he did in his last year in Detroit.

? Derek Anderson's first two passes in team drills were intended for newly acquired receiver Donte Stallworth. The first was on the money, the second was not. Establishing a rapport with Stallworth, the team's No. 2 receiver, evidently will be a goal during this portion of the pre-season.

? The difference in the offense compared to a year ago at this time was palpable. One year into the Rob Chudzinski system, everyone was more confident and the result was crisper throws and routes

Sort of surprised that Kenny Wright is still on the roster.

Article also mentioned that it is a big training camp for Traves Wilson who made one nice catch during drills but dropped two other balls that were thrown his way.

Browns decide to part ways with Wright after recent marijuana incident

The Cleveland Browns have terminated the contract of veteran cornerback Kenny Wright, the team announced Wednesday. The move comes after Wright had a recent off-the-field incident that could affect his playing status for the 2008 season.
On April 3, Wright was incarcerated after reportedly being caught with marijuana in his vehicle in Pearland, Texas, and leading police on a quarter-mile foot chase. The Browns have looked into the incident, talked about it with Wright and decided to release him.
The team released a statement Wednesday on Wright's release shortly after concluding their second day of organized team activities (OTAs). Wright was not present at the workout, and coach Romeo Crennel was asked afterward if the 30-year-old was still on the team.

NFL VIDEO PROBE
Pats didn't need tapes to defeat Browns

Wednesday, May 14, 2008Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
The Browns haven't defeated the New England Patriots since their defensive signals were videotaped by coach Bill Belichick in violation of NFL policy in a 2001 game.
The teams played in 2003, '04 and '07, and New England won each time.
Coincidence or not?

Cont...

Hey Grad; Seeing that Crennel was a coach on that team that profited from the video tape information by Walsh, you would think that he would have tried to change the signals or formations.
If Romeo was as knowlegable as Weis (who allegedly profitted most from the illegal taping), seems like Romeo would have enacted some counter espionage measures in '07.

Cleveland Browns '08 prospects keep Willie McGinest with team

Thursday, May 15, 2008Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
The question Willie McGinest asked himself was not whether to retire but whether to return. There's a difference.
Walking away would have been the easy answer. In 14 seasons, he'd accomplished virtually everything an NFL linebacker could, including three Super Bowl championships. He owns an entertainment company and is prepared for life after football.
Coming back to the Browns for a third year would mean diminished playing time and a huge paycut.

Cleveland Browns players talk about Winslow's no-show

Thursday, May 15, 2008Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
The Browns are apparently interpreting Kellen Winslow's absence from voluntary organized team activities - and silence - as a statement about his contract.
Asked Wednesday if it was health-related, coach Romeo Crennel said, "When he gets here we'll find out for sure exactly what that is. He's not here and I haven't spoken with him."
But Crennel didn't seem surprised by the no-show.
"There's something that happens every year with somebody," he said. "We've just got to get this team ready."
He said the last time he talked to Winslow was in January or February. Winslow has been rehabbing his surgically repaired knee in San Diego since then, but his absence most of the off-season is believed to be related to wanting a new deal. The 12 voluntary practices lead up to a mandatory minicamp June 10-12.

Guess I talked to soon about Kenny... bye-bye:shake:
From article referenced above
The Cleveland Browns have signed free agent defensive back Jereme Perry to a 1-year contract to fill out their thin secondary.

The team made the deal on Thursday. Perry played 12 games for the Browns in 2006 after earning a roster spot as an undrafted free agent from Eastern Michigan. He made 12 tackles and recovered one fumble. Perry played in four games on special teams for the Miami Dolphins last season.

BROWNS INSIDER
Cleveland Browns adding to Joshua Cribbs' workload

Friday, May 16, 2008Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Browns return specialist Joshua Cribbs might soon get his long-held wish of being more involved in the team's offense.
"We're putting in a nice package just to utilize more of my skills as well as everyone else's," said Cribbs, who made the Pro Bowl last season as a kick returner. "Last year, we put in one or two plays a game, but this year, it will be on a more consistent basis. It's going to be more of an elaborate package for a change of pace."
Cribbs, who was used creatively in organized team activities Wednesday, said defenses better beware.

Dispatch

In his talk at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club this week,
Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel sounded optimistic that former Ohio State star LeCharles Bentley has recovered from the torn patellar tendon that caused him to miss the 2006 and 2007 seasons.

Crennel said the former Pro Bowler was in New York to clarify an aspect of his recovery process and would likely begin regular practice sessions with the team.

"He feels good," Crennel said. "He says he feels better than he's felt in a long time. He's excited about the possibilities."

Bentley was signed as a free agent in 2006 but was injured early during training camp.
I found this rather surprising after everything else I have read.

Browns OL Tucker to miss two months with broken hip

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Ryan Tucker broke his hip during practice this week and will miss at least two months.

The Browns said Saturday that Tucker had successful surgery at the Cleveland Clinic on Friday to repair the non-displaced fracture. He hurt himself Wednesday during the Browns' organized team activities and limped off the field at end of practice.

The 6-6, 320-pound Tucker will likely miss all of training camp but is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season. Cleveland's opener is Sept. 7 at home against the Dallas Cowboys.

ABOUT THE BRADY QUINN PLAN

Sunday, May 18, 2008

Both Browns QBs must be ready
The Browns need to have a clear preseason plan for how to prepare Brady Quinn to eventually be a starting quarterback. That's not to push Derek Anderson out the door. It's to admit the Browns failed to use Quinn correctly last preseason, and it's to realize that quarterbacks do get hurt in the NFL. Finally, it's to pay respect to the difficult schedule facing them.
When it came to the quarterbacks, last preseason was a mess. Offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski seemed to favor Anderson. Coach Romeo Crennel wanted to give incumbent Charlie Frye a real chance to win the job. Quinn was holding out, but did sign a week before the first preseason game. Finally, there was a fourth QB -- Ken Dorsey.

Ex-Lion Shaun Rogers fitting in with new team, impressing coaches and ex-UM star Braylon Edwards

FREE PRESS STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES ? May 18, 2008
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports ex-Lion Shaun Rogers impressed in the Browns' recent off-season workouts. Rogers weights in the 360 range and is wearing Ted Washington's No. 92. A portion of the Plain Dealer story:

Rogers, acquired in a trade with Detroit this off-season, worked on a dance with his fellow defensive linemen after practice on Wednesday and they were all laughing and joking around. Apparently, the change of scenery has already done him a world of good. In Detroit, he became a symbol for all that was wrong with the team. Here, the pressure's off and he's happier than he's been in awhile.

This is not good especially if Shaffer or Thomas would suffer any type of injury during camp/preseason or probably about the first month of the season assuming Tucker's hit heals properly. They really don't have any quality backup OTs on their roster.

Fortunately, they have Hadnot to slide into Tucker's position at guard and we can always hope that Bentley will pass the Browns' physical exam and he can provide some depth at guard.
