Cleveland Browns (2008 Season)

I'm not pissed off by this. It came to a point where I expected it to be Mangini, and I expected to be pissed off by it. After hearing some of the comments of Jets players though, I think Mangini got a raw deal in New Jersey and may be able to do some good things in Cleveland.

I've heard some fans griping that the Browns needed to hire a "proven winner" and that Mangini is not that guy. First of all, proven winners usually already have a job. Second of all, proven winners don't want their next job to be in Cleveland. It is one of the backwards hellholes of the league. We need a coach who is hungry and capable and willing to bust some skulls to pull the team out of that abyss. Maybe Mangini can be that guy.

Agree. I think Mangini is a good coach. He won with a mediocre team in 2006. Granted, he fell flat on his face in 2007, but IIRC they had a lot of injuries, and last year he had to deal with what sounds like a divided locker room and a media firestorm at QB. Add in that he probably now has a rather large chip on his shoulder and it's hard not to see this as a positive. At the very least, the kiddie camp has closed. No where to go but up from Butchie and Romeo.

Here's the line for me.....

We hired a guy that I'm confident knows more about football than me.

Romeo's clock/game management reeked of a guy who has rode the coat-tails of others to prominence.

You cannot actually be that bad at clock management. The only other person that I personally know who would be that bad at game/clock management is a female.

And I'm not exagerrating by that much......

ESPN reporting that he wants to bring in the guy from the Raiders as DC. I'm going from memory here but is it Rob Ryan?

EDIT Yep. Rob Ryan from Raiders as DC. Brian Daboll Jets QB coach as OC. Mangini and Romeo decided that it was best if they didn't work together.

Herm Edwards brought in a guy to be his clock management coach when he was with the Jets I believe. That's what the guy did. Clock management.

Yes, that is him. Son of Buddy Ryan.

Also billmac- Bret Bielema is pretty bad at the college level. But I agree, he was awful. The kind of awful that costs games, which is rare at the NFL level. Really shows that as a DC he got lucky he never had to manage a clock. Lot more complicated on the offensive side.

Yep - and that would be a steal.
Indeed.

Source: Browns have agreed to hire Mangini as next head coach

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Eric Mangini is the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns, a week after being fired by the New York Jets.
A person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press that Mangini will be introduced Thursday at a news conference at the team's headquarters in Berea. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Mangini's contract has not been finalized.
Mangini reached an agreement on a four-year deal with the club on Wednesday, the person said....

Jets running back Leon Washington said in an e-mail to The Associated Press that he was pleased to see Mangini land another head coaching job.
"I am really happy for Coach Mangini," Washington said in the e-mail. "I learned so much from him while he had his tenure with the Jets. His hardworking, selfless and competitive approach really helped me...The Browns got themselves a really good coach."

I don't know much about his choice as OC, but if he gets Rob Ryan, that's a major upgrade. I'm liking this so far.

But that is the thing. I played one year of competitive football, and yet I understand when to use timeouts, when to kick fieldgoals, and when to go for it on 4th down.

Romeo has been an NFL assisstant coach for years, and an NFL coach for 3-4 years and he didn't understand game situations.

That is just unreal to me.

If I own a team and I'm hiring a Head Coach, one of the first things we're doing is going to a game-tape and I'm asking what he does in those game situations. Just to see if he has any savvy and understanding.

Romeo was brutal. I was just never comfortable he truly understood the intricacies of the game....
