I wish I were that optimistic. I am to the point where I am going to be negative until the Browns give me something to be positive about. Even if they have a fantastic draft and land Steinbach, Clements and Deilman, I am just going to assume they are all going to get injured and end up with a staff infection before the season starts. :sad2:

BEREA Expansion teams sorely need bang from their free agency bucks. Browns shopping sprees have amounted to a marshmallow hammer tapped on vanilla soft serve.

Ironically, the team's series of bad luck and low-watt picks in the free-agent market leaves holes that force third-year General Manager Phil Savage to shop again.

The 2007 market opens at 12:01 a.m. Friday. By the time Conan O'Brien signs off, the team might know whether former Ohio State cornerback Nate Clements will sign.

CLEVELAND (AP) ? The Cleveland Browns spent more than $100 million on eight free agents last year and got little return on their investment.
That's not going to stop them from doing it again.
The perpetually rebuilding Browns, coming off a brutal 4-12 season, will be among several teams throwing big money at a few players when the NFL's free-agency signing period begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday.

Bless their hearts. The Browns are the NFL equivalent of the chubby kid on the little league team who strikes out all the time and has an asthma attack jogging out to is spot in RF, but he plays two innings every game anyway because the league says they have to let him participate.

Just my opinion but from a Browns fan that is pretty harsh.:cry: Maybe you were just kidding but it worries me that everyone is so down about the Browns already. Last time I checked nobody has lost a game yet so we are still right there with every other team in the NFL. This is the time of year that every team in the league is in the race for the Superbowl. They may suck now but I still love the Browns and eventually they will go to and win the Superbowl and all of this hell we have gone through as a franchise will have been worth it. Everything happens in cycles and lately our cycle sucks but it WILL TURN AROUND. Look at what happened with the New Orlean Saints last year they completely turn a team around in 1 season. Look at the Buckeyes and John Cooper...he couldn't win a game against Michigan or a bowl game. It looked like we would never turn it around but since Tressel has come here we OWN MICHIGAN. Have faith Browns fans we will have our revenge and when we do and we win it all you can say that you believed in the team when nobody else did. The Future is now, lets go get some free agents, and turn this thing around. GO BROWNIES!!! WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

Browns sign Fraley

CLEVELAND ? Shortly before trying to entice other free agents, the Cleveland Browns took care of one of their own.

They reached preliminary agreement on a four-year contract with center Hank Fraley, who rescued the Browns last season after they lost LeCharles Bentley to a career-threatening knee injury.

Financial terms were not immediately available late Thursday from agent Ralph Cindrich.

BEREA While the Browns tried to make two flying tackles immediately after the free agency market opened at 12:01 a.m. today, they also stayed alert for second-line deals.

Premium free agents Nate Clements and Eric Steinbach weren't expected to stay on the market long. In fact, one source said Steinbach could sign with the Browns as early as today.

Both agents heard from the Browns, who appeared to have a legitimate shot at signing both the Ohio-bred cornerback, Clements, and the former Big Ten and Cincinnati Bengals guard, Steinbach.

In relation to team needs and how the top of the free agency market took shape in recent weeks, Clements and Steinbach emerged as the Browns' consensus Big 2.

If they net Clements and Steinbach that would be a coup for the Browns. Arguably the top UFA in Clements and a highly regarded guard in Steinbach (also a top 5 to 10 UFA). They will pay in a relatively talent-light and dollar-rich market, but would also pay for lesser talent if they miss out on these two.

Wonder how much money they will have left for other FA acquisitions?

CLEVELAND ? The Browns will take another shot at free agency, with approximately $27 million to spend as the market opens today.
The Browns were the darlings of free agency last year, or so some thought. Cleveland had many holes and money to fill them, so they paid more than $100 million for free agents such as LeCharles Bentley, Willie McGinest, Ted Washington, Joe Jurevicius and Kevin Shaffer.

That's the going price, IMO. 7mil/yr is right in the zone that I think most of us expected.

Cleveland papers had earlier reported the cost paid to the under-performing Shaffer had a first year cost near 6.5 million, so Steinbach asking for 7 yr 49 million is in line. It is exactly the contract that Steve Hutchinson received last year from Minnesota.
