Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Also from cleveland.com (The Plain Dealer):

* Look for the Browns to go after Buffalo cornerback Nate Clement in free agency. :osu::oh::io:
* The Browns have $30 million in cap room and will be aggressive in free agency.
* The team has stepped up negotiations with center Hank Fraley now that it's apparent Bentley won't be around for 2007.
* There's no sense of urgency to re-sign free agent safety Brian Russell.
* The Browns extended running back Jason Wright's contract for one year through 2008.
* Cornerback Gary Baxter, who suffered two torn patella tendons, has exceeded doctor's expectations for where he'd be at this point.

Brown center LeCharles Bentley, whose lifelong dream was to play for the Browns, will most likely miss the 2007 season and Browns general manager Phil Savage indicated there?s a chance Bentley?s career might be over.

Savage said during a press conference on Tuesday that Bentley will probably need another surgery on his torn left patella tendon and that if he does, he will miss the 2007 season. He said Bentley is rehabbing in Arizona and will know by May or June if he needs the surgery.

He said the Browns will carry Bentley on the roster through the 2007 season, regardless.

I think we certainly owe LeCharles the opportunty to see where he's going to be, said Savage. This time next year I think we'll have a much clearer picture in terms of is he really a legitimate piece of the puzzle here or has the injury been so devastating that he may never play again.

I think that's something we'll know clearly this time a year from now.

Bentley, from St. Ignatius and Ohio State, vowed in December that he would play again. Bentley's agent, Jonathan Feinsod, said today, "I guarantee that LeCharles will play again at a Pro Bowl level."

Bentley, signed to a 6-year, $36 million free agent contract, suffered the torn patella tendon on the first contact drill of the 2006 training camp and underwent surgery soon after.

Savage said the Browns are proceeding as though Bentley will not play in 2007, saying it will be a "bonus" if he does.

Following his initial surgery, Bentley suffered a life-threatening staph infection in the knee that had to be surgically removed. The staph infection may have caused the current damage that will probably need to be repaired.
That looks a lot like the article posted 2 above ya...

Bentley doubtful for 2007

Browns GM concedes that team will need to add two linemen to make up for injuries, free agents

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA - General Manager Phil Savage pretty much confirmed that LeCharles Bentley will not be playing for the Browns in 2007.
Bentley most likely will have another surgery in May or June on the torn patellar tendon that sidelined him last season. Savage said the Browns would carry Bentley through the 2007 season, then evaluate his future.
``I think we certainly owe LeCharles an opportunity to see where he's going to be,'' Savage said Tuesday of the center. ``This time next year I think we'll have a much clearer picture in terms of -- is he a legitimate piece of the puzzle here or has the injury been so devastating that he'll never play again?
``I think that's something we'll know clearly this time a year from now.''

Bentley will miss another season

Third knee surgery puts Browns center's career in doubt
Wednesday, February 21, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
The Browns lifted the veil of secrecy from LeCharles Bentley's knee injury a little more on Tuesday, disclosing that the center will miss the 2007 season after an upcoming third surgery.
General Manager Phil Savage even ventured to speculate that Bentley "may never play again."

Savage wants to make Browns worth paying to see
Wednesday, February 21, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk

BEREA The Browns announced they won't raise ticket prices in 2007, meaning they were pretty sure their customers didn't enjoy taking a sharp stick in the eye in 2006.

They're hoping to raise expectations.

They head for the NFL Scouting Combine this week with a top-four draft pick - and looking for possible 2007 contributors in each of the first three rounds.

"It's a good year to be in the top five," said General Manager Phil Savage, who added that wasn't the case when the Browns had a No. 3 pick in 2005.

Savage wouldn't confirm the top four players on his board are, as some believe, LSU quarterback JeMarcus Russell, Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson, Wisconsin tackle Joe Thomas and Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn.

Savage, Browns desperately need great offseason

TODD PORTER

BEREA Inside the Cleveland Browns' war room, large dry-erase boards are blank. Last year's draft board still is visible with index cards and players' names on them, some given various keys. The other three walls are empty.

Behind the seat of scout Bob Morris, responsible for the Southwest, is a large picture of Morris sitting in the stands of the Alabama-LSU game last season. It is a blown-up photo from a USA Today story last December. A hand-written note at the bottom of the picture reads, "How am I going to see through this fog of confusion?"

Bentley's career could be over

BEREA -- Training camp is still more than five months away and already the injury news is devastating for the Browns.

LeCharles Bentley, who missed all of 2006 recovering from surgery on his left patellar tendon, is likely to undergo another operation in May or June that would cost him the 2007 season and possibly end his career, Browns general manager Phil Savage said yesterday.

Bentley is working out in Arizona, trying to build enough strength in his leg so it could withstand another surgery.

The patellar tendon was torn on the first team drill of training camp July 27 and surgically repaired the next day. A staph infection developed and had to be cleaned out surgically about a month later.

to be accurate, savage was on cleveland radio last night saying that the media took his quote out of context. apparently he said that bentley has just as much a chance of going back to the pro bowl as he does of being done for good, implying that the additional surgery in no way impacts the eventual liklihood of his return.

just looks like you'll be needing some OL in the draft, and that one isn't going to survive it to pick #3.....

probably not, but i think they will be able to get someone in the later rounds that will be serviceable. I am really keeping my fingers crossed that they get Steinbach or from what I heard Dielman is a stud too.
