Browns have cap room to spare
Monday, February 12, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA The Browns are about $30 million under the NFL salary cap. They'll need every nickel to plug their holes.
At the moment, they have:
n No viable starters under contract at center, right guard, right defensive end and No. 3 wide receiver.
n Serious question marks at cornerback, nose tackle, right tackle, left guard, running back and quarterback.
n Doubts pertaining to left offensive tackle and outside linebacker.
n In short, more holes than a team crawling out of a 4-12 crater can shake a Brinks truck at.
The team is plowing through plans to fill holes through the first available means, free agency. With the market opening March 2, it's time to analyze the holes and ways to plug them.
Today, a look at the biggest trouble spots on offense

Browns' big worry not quarterback

Lineman, cornerback positions present more important dilemmas

By Terry Pluto

Scribbles in my Browns notebook...
? While they don't say so, it's no secret that the Browns would like to sign free agent Eric Steinbach, the outstanding guard from the Cincinnati Bengals. The Browns want him as a guard to replace free agent Cosey Coleman. They also have major questions about veteran guard Joe Andruzzi, who is having physical problems. Finding guards is one of the key quests for the offseason.

Defense needs help, but fixes will be costly
Tuesday, February 13, 2007
BROWNS BEAT

STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA

There's trouble in Cuyahoga River City. The Browns' defense needs shored up, but offseason repairs will be tricky and expensive.

Heavy erosion has the defensive line set up for catastrophe in a free-agent market that offers dubious promise. The team is inclined to spend a Round 1 pick on an offensive player, but that would likely prevent getting sudden D-line impact from a rookie - Jamaal Anderson (Arkansas) and Alan Branch (Michigan) are among the few projected as instant starters.

Likewise, cornerback problems could be severe if the right moves aren't made. Trouble is, the Browns must spend big bucks to land a free-agent cover man, just two years after doing that for Gary Baxter.

Signing him would be HUGE. Has anyone heard a status of LeCharles lately?

Browns: Year in preview

Wednesday, February 14, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
The longer you stay in this business, the more you see history repeat itself.
Marty Schottenheimer was fired as coach of the San Diego Chargers after a 14-3 season because of a "dysfunctional" relationship with his bosses. Among their many disagreements reportedly was Schottenheimer's desire to hire his brother, Kurt, as the team's defensive coordinator.
Gee, where and when have we seen that before?

Schottenheimer not to be pursued by Browns? brass
Wednesday, February 14, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Not that there wasn?t in-house discussion on Marty Schottenheimer, but the Browns won?t chase him.

Head Coach Romeo Crennel is on thin ice after a 4-12 year. However, the brass decided in January to let Crennel spend 2007 either ratifying his regime or serving as a bridge to the next coach.

Reliable league sources indicate this conclusion will stand, even though Schottenheimer plopped on the market Monday, when the Chargers fired him.

Yes, Browns should give Marty a call

By Terry Pluto

At the very least, the Browns should seriously consider hiring Marty Schottenheimer as an adviser.
Would that make current coach Romeo Crennel nervous?
Probably no more than the fact that Crennel knows his time is short, that 10 of his assistants have been replaced and that the front office is expecting a major improvement from a year ago.
When a coach had records of 6-10 and 4-12 in his first two years, there's little reason to feel secure.

It would be fantastic to see the Browns bring him back in some capacity. Give him some sort of VP title and let him contribute. He is a great football guy and he was the best coach the Browns had since Paul Brown (or since, IMO). Now, whether I would like to see him as coach, yes and no. I would like to see him coaching this team over RAC, but not if it means that Lerner does not go after "THE CHIN" in '08.
