Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Canton

Constant coach shuffling ruffles Browns? continuity
Sunday, February 4, 2007
BROWNS BEAT STEVE DOERSCHUK

Don?t knock ancient history. It?s what the Browns have to keep them warm when Mars seems closer than Miami.
They didn?t call it the Super Bowl in 1964, but that?s basically what the Browns won when they beat the Colts, 27-0, in the NFL championship. Cleveland did it with precocious young receivers Gary Collins and Paul Warfield, who had been No. 4 and No. 11 overall draft picks. In theory, Kellen Winslow Jr. and Braylon Edwards ? former No. 6 and No. 3 picks ? are a latter-day Collins and Warfield.

Path to hall finally opens for Browns' Hickerson

Six-time Pro Bowler chosen after waiting for 29 years

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

Gene Hickerson finally has his deserved spot in Canton.
The Browns guard was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, joining fellow seniors nominee Charlie Sanders and four other modern-era players.
``I am honored to be joining such an elite group of individuals and to be remembered as one of the best linemen of all time,'' Hickerson said in a statement released by the team. ``It was such a relief to finally get the phone call.''

Friends call wait 'an injustice'

Tuesday, February 06, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot

Plain Dealer Reporter
Former Browns guard Gene Hickerson waited so long to get into the Pro Football Hall of the Fame that he no longer has the capacity to fully comprehend it.
He still has the same smiling eyes, the same dry humor and still laughs at former teammate Doug Dieken's jokes, but his mind isn't all there.
Hickerson, who will turn 72 this month, is suffering from dementia and symptoms of Alzheimer's. He remembers knowing Elvis as a kid growing up in Memphis, Tenn., but sometimes forgets his last name. At his press conference in Berea on Monday, he was unable to complete a thought about finally making the Hall after 29 years.

Colts know how to draft, Browns need to learn
Tuesday, February 6, 2007
BROWNS ANALYSIS STEVE DOERSCHUK

If the draft is the lifeblood of an NFL team, that explains the Browns? anemia.

The Colts represent a butt-kicking argument for the draft as lifeblood. They won the Super Bowl with 19 of 22 starters coming from predraft scouting. Included in that 19 were players the Colts drafted or signed as undrafted rookies. By contrast, the Browns went 4-12, basically using eight starters who joined the organization as rookies.

Cherished memory of a Browns hero

Friday, February 09, 2007

While I am ecstatic that Gene Hickerson has finally made it [to the Pro Football Hall of Fame], I am truly saddened and angered that it took so long.
I was a running back for Maple Heights in 1961 when I broke my ankle in almost the identical spot as Gene's. I was waiting in Dr. [Vic] Ippolito's office to be casted when Mr. Hickerson came in with his fractured ankle. Dr. Ippolito showed us the X-rays, which looked identical.
We sat in the same room while the casts were applied and Gene talked about his experiences with Jim Brown. When the casts were finished, I asked Mr. Hickerson to sign my cast, anxious to show all of my teammates.

Friday, February 09, 2007 Tony Grossi

Plain Dealer Reporter
Another Butch Davis assistant coach has returned to the Browns.
The club announced the appointment of Mike Sullivan as assistant offensive line coach. He had the same role under Davis for four years and replaces Jeff Uhlenhake, whose departure was not announced.
Sullivan was offensive line coach at Western Michigan University the past two years. He joins another former Davis assistant, Rob Chudzinski, now offensive coordinator, on the overhauled staff of Romeo Crennel.
