Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Browns got Steinbach. If given the choice, i'd have taken Steinbach over Clements in a heartbeat. Much greater need in my opinion. Mel Tucker seems to be able to produce a decent secondary with whatever talent he's given. I heard Clements was going to want Champ Bailey type money and I was hoping the Browns didn't bite.

yep...overspending for a center and a guard in consecutive years. This after drafting a center in the first round a few years ago.

Heck of a job, Brownies

The Bungles could stand to throw a little coin at a center. Then maybe they could get off an extra point to get in the playoffs.

Steinbach is a great pick up by the Brownies because he gives us options. He can play tackle or guard. They didn't overspend especially if he might end up playing LT. Then they could move Shaffer to RT. Either way at least the Browns are attempting to get better. Also who knows it sounds like we may also get Deilman from San Diego which would be another great addition. Add our possibilities for 1st round draft pick, Thomas, Johnson, Peterson, or Branch and this team has gotten a major upgrade this offseason.
Also I would have loved to see Nate in a Browns Uni but lets face it he isn't worth that much money. Having said that though congrats to Nate for getting himself that contract. It is really great for he and his family. GO BUCKS and GO BROWNIES! WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

It will be interesting to see what we do with the money we didn't spend afterall on Clements. We've now opened up some room for another pretty big FA signing. If it is Dielman, I'm for it, but to spend 14 mill on a pair of guards (Steinbach likely won't play tackle) is a little high. We could grab a quality player at another position of need and still have cash to burn for later. Plus if we do draft AP, there will be some serious $$$ spent there. Heck, signing any top 5 pick is going to be a big blow to your budget.

I bet we go after a corner or d-end next. JMO.

i've heard Antwan Peek could be close to signing. played at UC and then for the Texans. seemed to be improving with the Texans but then didn't really fit when they switched to the 4-3. could be a nice compliment to Kam Wimbley with Willie McG moving to more of a situational/reserve/mentor role. not a huge name and probably wouldn't get much pub but it likely wouldn't cost a great deal and could be a good fit if it happens.

Browns' big check lands big guard

Eric Steinbach gets seven-year agreement worth $49.5 million

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

The Browns again wasted no time making a big splash and writing a big check in free agency.
The team landed one of its priorities early Friday evening when Eric Steinbach agreed to a seven-year contract that makes him the highest-paid guard (for now) in the league. He is expected to sign the deal this morning.
Steinbach's $49.5 million deal is $500,000 more than Steve Hutchinson received from the Minnesota Vikings last year and $17 million is guaranteed.

The market changed for guards last year with the signing of Steve Hutchinson (Minnesota improved from 27th in rushing yardage in 2005 to 16th in 2006). 14 million to shore up your interior line for the next several years is a good thing to do. If we get AP, then that could be the spark that this offense needs.

As far as CBs or DEs in free agency I don't think the player's left at CB would doing anything but add depth, and the DE market is extremely thin as well.

I would really like to address these in the draft. Maybe an Okoye or Pitcock type of player would fit our 3-4 defense just fine, at DE.

In their efforts to help shore up the cornerback position in free agency, it appears as if the team will turn their attention to Rod Hood, a fifth year player out of Auburn who spent his first four years in Philadelphia with the Eagles, and was the teams nickel man last year. Hood is thought of in many circles as an up and comer, a special teams standout that has developed as a corner in years three and four, and appears ready for a full time starting role. If signed, Hood would compete with Daven Holly for the cornerback spot opposite Leigh Bodden. The Plain Dealer is reporting that Hood is scheduled to visit Cleveland today.

In that same column, the PD also reports that Houston Texans outside linebacker
Antwan Peek (pictured) was also in Berea last night, and that he has a close rapport with Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, which could lead to an announcement of the Browns inking Peek. Peek is a 3-4 outside linebacker, and would compete with Willie McGinest for the starting spot opposite phenom Kamerion Wimbley. Also mentioned as having visited the Browns yesterday were Bengals defensive lineman Shaun Smith and Cowboys defensive end Kenyon Coleman.

Typical Bengals. Congrats, Brown fans. Steiny's a good one and worth every penny. The fact that in one game he can move to center and tackle without you even noticing a difference is amazing. Might be the most versatile lineman I have ever seen....there just aren't many who can play C, G AND T.

We'll miss him in Cincy...but at least we still have Jason Buck...errr...Justin Buck...errr..Justin Smith for 8 mill this year.

Browns right tackle Ryan Tucker, speaking publicly for the first time since leaving the Browns in November with a mental disorder, said Saturday he's in great shape emotionally and physically and plans to return to his starting role with the Browns in 2007.
"I feel great, man," Tucker said during a public appearance at the new Gold's Gym in Westlake. "It's a whole new chapter in my life and I'm ready to get on with it. I absolutely plan on coming back and starting for the Browns this season."
Tucker, who left the team twice because of an undisclosed mental illness, declined to be specific about his disorder, but said everything has been rectified.

More great news for the Browns and Browns fans alike. Good to hear that Ryan seems to be getting his life back together. It seems like this offseason has really been positive for the Brownies.
