Browns get 2nd chance on guard

Cleveland signs deal for Eric Steinbach worth $49.5 million

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA - Before the 2003 draft, University of Iowa guard Eric Steinbach believed reports that he was headed to Cleveland as the 21st pick in the first round.
``I was kinda waiting for that,'' he said.
But Browns coach Butch Davis took Notre Dame center Jeff Faine, and Steinbach slipped to the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round, No. 33 overall. Second-year general manager Phil Savage traded Faine to the New Orleans Saints last year on draft day.
On Saturday, the Browns corrected another past draft mistake when it signed Steinbach to a seven-year, $49.5 million contract that made him the highest-paid guard in the league. He is guaranteed $17 million.

BROWNS BRIEF

Antwan Peek gets
three-year deal
The Browns added their second free agent Saturday night, when linebacker Antwan Peek agreed to a three-year contract.
Peek played four years in Houston, where he never reached his full potential as a pass rusher. He was drafted in the third round from the University of Cincinnati and was expected to put pressure on the quarterback as a defensive end.

A fat deal for skinny Steinbach
Sunday, March 4, 2007
By STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA Eric Steinbach's wallet is fat. By NFL guard standards, he's skinny - a fire pole in a fireplug world.

The top four guard prospects for next month's draft as measured at the Combine: Ben Grubbs (6-foot-3, 311 pounds), Justin Blalock (6-3, 320), Arron Sears (6-3, 319) and Manuel Ramirez (6-3, 326).

After signing a seven-year, $49 million deal with the Browns, Steinbach said he played for the Bengals at 290 pounds. That's less beef spread over a longer backbone. He stands 6-foot-6.

Browns look to the future, add Peek

Sunday, March 04, 2007 Tony Grossi

Plain Dealer Reporter
The addition of linebacker Antwan Peek by the Browns on Saturday is a sign of the rising influence of defensive coordinator Todd Grantham on the makeup of the team.
Peek, a Cincinnati native, played the past four years with the Houston Texans. Grantham was defensive line coach during Peek's first two seasons in Houston.
Peek fell off the map last year when the Texans switched to a 4-3 defensive system. He had one sack and 13 tackles in 11 games. Peek, 6-3, had trouble keeping weight on. He finished the season at 238 pounds, much too light to play end in a 4-3.

Work on line seems infinite

Browns promise more new faces
Sunday, March 04, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Nobody can accuse the Browns of ignoring their offensive line - except in the draft.
For the second year in a row, the team is pouring millions of dollars into the line in free agency.
Last year it was center LeCharles Bentley and left tackle Kevin Shaffer signed to long-term contracts of $36 million each.

BROWNS Tucker
A renewed Tucker says he's ready to play again

Sunday, March 04, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot

Plain Dealer Reporter
Browns right tackle Ryan Tucker, speaking publicly for the first time since leaving the Browns in November with a mental disorder, said Saturday he's in great shape emotionally and physically and plans to return to his starting role with the Browns in 2007.
"I feel great, man," Tucker said during a public appearance at the new Gold's Gym in Westlake. "It's a whole new chapter in my life and I'm ready to get on with it. I absolutely plan on coming back and starting for the Browns this season."
Tucker, who left the team twice because of an undisclosed mental illness, declined to be specific about his disorder, but said everything has been rectified.

If Tucker can come back at 100% it will be good for the Browns o-line. He has been their best lineman for the past 3-4 years. That way they will just have to worry about center and the left side of the line. :p

It looks like Dielman is going to resign with the Chargers. That should about do it, as far as signing OL in free agency (unless they nab a sleeper). Now, Browns, please, draft a few Olineman. Granted, we have needs everywhere (DE, DT, CB, LB, RB, QB?, and probably even WR come to mind), and I'm all for taking the "best player on the board" (although maybe the Browns should steal some other team's board and use that), but I'd like to see at least two OLineman taken in the first 4-5 rounds.

Last time we took the best player on the board, we ended up with Braylon.

I'm all for taking AP (depending on the potential trade downs) or one of the premier DLs/CBs in the draft in the first IF we take OL in the 2nd for sure. Having Tucker back (if he can get back into game shape) really changes the complexion of the offensive line. That said, I truly think you can get 1st round quality at OL in the 2nd round.

Another thing I wouldn't be opposed to would be trading Braylon for a 7th round pick and taking CJ. Kidding, I'd demand at least a 6th rounder for his piss poor attitude.

If we can get a stud in the 2nd to play on the left side of the line (and start early on in his Browns' career), then grabbing Peterson in the first becomes very attractive.

Then again, there's the whole QB thing. I am not, never have been, nor will be sold on Frye. Even when the line holds up, he does not impress me. I think the fact that the coaches have said that the starting QB spot is no longer his, but instead an open role, says A LOT. That and who knows, it looks like we could now be a contender for Schaub or Carr (who I still don't think is done in the NFL).

I say throw Braylon for Jenkins into a trade down with the Falcons.

Yeah because Braylon has worked out SO well...

hindsight is 20/20 but the entire top 10 (minus Ronnie Brown) sucked that year.

he hurt his knee his rookie year, came back quickly from it, and has been through three different QBs (none of which are good) on a team with terrible pass protection. his drops aside, hes done a really good job.

id rather have him that any other person in that top 10 and if we didnt have him, our receiving core wouldve been awful the past the two seasons.

True he came back from a knee injury. I don't know about this "good job" you keep seeing. I saw an unmotivated and sometimes disruptive player last year.

I'd rather have Ronnie Brown. After that Shawne Merriman would be good too. And don't look now, the receiving CORPS is horrible, but while that isn't directly a product of drafting Braylon, IT IS a product of not having an offensive line to block for a young QB.

The Browns don't have one singular game breaker in the WR CORPS, Braylon included. The reason why it isn't that big a deal is that Joe freaking Montana would have issues getting the ball out with what is supposedly in front of him.
