Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Witness this: Phil Dawson is Cleveland's MVP

Sunday, December 23, 2007John Campanelli
Plain Dealer Reporter
Arguments about Cleveland sports are endless: Would we have won the NBA title if Carlos Boozer were still here? Should Chief Wahoo be retired? Is it best to give a Steelers fan an uppercut or a groin shot?
But one question -- who is Cleveland's sports MVP? -- seems to be settled. It's LeBron James, of course.
Or is it?

Ridenour on the Browns
Santa, please make this wish list a reality Defensive end might not fit under tree, but beating Patriots would make year
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Sunday, Dec 23, 2007

In the spirit of the holiday season, and with the possible euphoria of clinching a playoff berth this afternoon in Cincinnati, it's time to dream. So here are five Christmas wishes for the Browns in 2008:
1. A defensive end.
Orpheus Roye has been a dedicated player here for the past eight years, but at age 34 and in his 12th NFL season, his body is breaking down. Currently in the bottom six in the league in sacks with 23, the Browns' pass rush needs help. But their search will be tougher because of the type of athlete needed to play end in a 3-4 scheme. Roye is 6-foot-4, 330 pounds, and Robaire Smith is 6-4, 320 pounds.
Matching a list of potential 2008 free-agent defensive ends on theredzone.org (which might not include up-to-the-minute signings) with the list of the NFL's leading sackers (5.0 minimum) offers a few names, but most are not hefty enough for the 3-4. The Browns' ideal choice probably also would be seeking his first free-agent deal, like left guard Eric Steinbach was in March, rather than someone on the downside of his career. Among the possibilities (if they don't re-sign with their respective teams) are Jared Allen (6-6, 270), a fourth-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2004 who has 39 career sacks, and Antwan Odom (6-5, 274), a second-rounder in '04 for the Tennessee Titans who is from Browns General Manager Phil Savage's hometown of Mobile, Ala. Allen has baggage, including his second DUI arrest before this season began. Restricted free agent Chris Canty of the Dallas Cowboys comes closer to the profile at 6-7 and 280 pounds. A fourth-rounder in 2005, he played in Al Groh's 3-4 scheme at Virginia, but what the Cowboys tender him will determine whether he's an option. The Browns might have to scour the list of available defensive tackles that could make the transition.
Savage probably will look for help in the draft but won't have a shot at some of the top talent without a first-round pick (surrendered to the Cowboys to draft quarterback Brady Quinn). Chris Long (6-4, 282) of Virginia could be a top-five selection. Quentin Groves of Auburn (6-3, 251), whom ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. calls ''a speed rusher with the talent to rank as one of the most feared sack artists in the nation,'' would probably be a linebacker in a 3-4 and could go in the top 15.

Cleveland Browns | Titans, Colts now control Browns' fate

Titans, Colts now control Browns' fate

Zac Jackson, Staff Writer

CINCINNATI -- Now, it's out of the Browns' hands.
The Browns' loss in Cincinnati combined with the Titans' win over the Jets means this for their playoff chances...
**The Browns and Titans are both 9-6 heading into the season's final week.
**The Titans play at Indianapolis in a game that means nothing to the Colts, who have clinched a first-round bye. If the Colts win, the Browns are in. If the Titans win, the Browns are out. Here's why...

Today was not the day for DA to throw 4 INT's. May very well have cost the Browns a shot at the playoffs, I know it's still hasn't been determined yet but I don't have that warm and fuzzy.

However, if The Browns do win, 10-6 is nothing to hang their heads about. Making the playoffs at this point is out of their hands...they still played like shit today but during this season they grew up a lot.

They probably get bumped in the first round regardless, that defense has got to get better at stopping the run, especially if they plan on making any noise in the playoffs this year or in the future.

Beat the niners and hope to get lucky with some help.

It's definately been a great season, but i am absolutely fuming right now. DA is partially to blame for throwing into coverage, but the fucking retarded coaches called 48 passing plays on a day where winds were pushing 40 mph. That is idiotic any way you look at it. Jamal was effective and the Bungles run defense sucks, yet they go away from the run and pass like there's no tomorrow. The implosion at the end of the 1st half should never have happened. Boggles the mind. Also, they need to take a hard look at Grantham after the season. There is no excuse for how piss-poor this team is at tackling. No excuse.

The weather was very similar, except for the footing, to last week and they ran the ball much more last week then today and Cincinnati has a terrible run defense. Sometimes I wonder about DA and then sometimes I wonder about Chud. Sometimes he is a master at calling plays and at other times I just have to shake my head. I am just so pissed to lose to the fucking Bengals.

Jamal definetly showed up today. I really think we set this guy down and talk to him about sharing some carries with a young guy, then sign him to a fair 3 year deal.

I was pissed too about the amount of pass plays too. Chud is a great OC, but I think him being young tend to make him panic a little too early. He needs to stick with the run longer, but tends to get pass happy if we're down 10 or more.

I'm starting to wonder, what is it going to take to get Brady Quinn on the field?

I know what you're saying, but DA is a major reason the Browns are where they are. The thing that concerns me about him is that he really hasn't been all that sharp the past few weeks. That maybe it was a case of somebody coming in, starting off really fast, then coming back down to earth. A few weeks ago, I was certain that DA was the future at QB, now I'm a little less sure of that. Either way, he's had a great season and deserves a lot of credit. I'd hate to be in Savage's shoes having to make a choice between him and BQ, because inevitably, it's gonna have to be made. Another bad performance next week by DA could make the decision easier though.

What's really sad is that the Browns can stay home next Sunday... They have no reason to even play... They literally can forfeit next week and it won't matter...

Their fate is 100% in the hands of the Indy-Tenn game... and with Indy planning on treating this like game 1 of the pre-season (starters will play one or two series then sit).. it's not looking good...

damn

On the plus side, we can put BQ in for a half or maybe the whole game in front of the home crowd to see how he does. Why not?

The Browns' Kellen Winslow Jr. is tripped by the Bengals' John Busing on a first-half reception. Winslow surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the season.

CINCINNATI -- Browns cornerback Leigh Bodden played the best game of his NFL career but still was down following yesterday's 19-14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Bodden has had success against Bengals receivers Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh and played well again yesterday with five tackles, two interceptions and three passes defended.
It was his first multi-interception game.

Four picks put dent in Anderson's dream season

By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
CINCINNATI -- In the midst of a Cinderella season, Browns quarterback Derek Anderson turned into a pumpkin yesterday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Anderson had his worst game of an otherwise breakout season in a 19-14 loss to Cincinnati. He completed 29 of 48 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns while tying a career high with four interceptions for a season-low 53.4 passer rating.

Bob Hunter commentary: Browns send wrong signal in botching great chance

Browns quarterback Derek Anderson reacts after an incompletion on the Browns' final drive. He threw a season-high four interceptions.

CINCINNATI -- It doesn't get much easier than this, does it? Beat the woeful Cincinnati Bengals and make the playoffs for the first time since 2002 and only the second time in the past 13 years. Beat a 5-9 team that has been losing to bad teams all season, a team that lost to the 4-11 San Francisco 49ers last week. Beat a Bengals team that was missing its two starting safeties and its starting running back, a team that can't stop the run, a team that ... oh, all right, you get the idea.
