Chinedum Ndukwe, left, a Dublin Coffman grad and a rookie Bengals safety, is nudged out of bounds by the Browns' Ryan Tucker on a 44-yard interception return.

CINCINNATI -- For a few seconds yesterday, as he ran free down the sideline with the ball in his hand, Chinedum Ndukwe felt like a wide receiver again. But he was not running fade routes for Brady Quinn on this day, and the setting was much bigger than a Dublin Coffman game. Ndukwe played a starring role on a stage he worked for years to reach: an NFL game, his Cincinnati Bengals against the Cleveland Browns, as the starting strong safety.

Bengals turn tables on rivals

By Mark Gokavi
Staff Writer

Monday, December 24, 2007
CINCINNATI ? Jeff Clayton heard Cleveland Browns fans chirping all week among his buddies at Dayton Freight.
"They're telling me about how they're going to the playoffs and this and that, but I tell them about how we're going to stop them," said Clayton, a Bengals season-ticket holder from Dayton who grew up in Cincinnati. "Usually, the Bengals are the team that's winning and the Browns come in and beat us and ruin it. This time around, the Bengals are going to do it."

Bengals hurt Browns' chance at playoffs

By Mark Gokavi
Staff Writer

Sunday, December 23, 2007

CINCINNATI ? The Bengals playoff hopes went up in smoke some weeks ago. But they wanted no part of division-rival Cleveland Browns winning to clinch a playoff spot Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium.
"That's what we were preaching all week," Bengals rookie safety Marvin White said. "Not to let them come and open up cigars and smoke on our field."

Browns blown away by Bengals With a playoff berth at stake, interceptions cost Cleveland as winds gust
By George M. Thomas
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Monday, Dec 24, 2007
CINCINNATI: The road continues to bewitch and beguile the Browns with the latest unfriendly stop being Cincinnati's Paul Brown Stadium.
With a playoff berth on the line, the Browns blew an opportunity to clinch a spot with a 19-14 loss against the Bengals. It was the Browns' fifth loss in eight road games this season.
''We haven't done the things we need to do to consistently win on the road. We've always stubbed our toe somehow or another, and we've only come up with a couple of wins,'' Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards said. ''That's been our downfall this season.''

The lost chance can also provide an opportunity to grow as team The seeds of the loss show up early in game

CINCINNATI: Jamal Lewis tried to put it delicately.
The eight-year veteran running back didn't want to offend his Browns teammates by saying they choked or couldn't handle the pressure.
So, instead, he said, ''We just have to grow up.''
Needing only to beat Cincinnati on Sunday to clinch an AFC wild-card playoff berth, Cleveland fumbled the silver platter and lost 19-14. Quarterback Derek Anderson
tied his career-high with four interceptions, which handed the Bengals 13 points.

Slow start haunts Browns Cleveland rallies late but can't overcome its 19-0 halftime deficit
By George M. Thomas
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Monday, Dec 24, 2007
CINCINNATI: Yet another slow start doomed the Browns against the Cincinnati Bengals in their 19-14 loss Sunday.
Although the running game proved somewhat effective in the first half with the Browns trailing 19-0, Derek Anderson got little going and had a quarterback rating of 19.4 on 7-of-15 passing for 65 yards and two interceptions late in the second quarter.
Anderson completed 29-of-48 passes for 250 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. With the Browns down 19-0 and getting the ball to open the third quarter, Anderson looked to be getting the offense in gear. Instead, from the Bengals' 9-yard line, he threw an ill-advised pass to tight end Kellen Winslow that bounced off one Bengals defender and landed in the hands of rookie strong safety Chinedum Ndukwe to kill the scoring opportunity.

By Marla Ridenour

CINCINNATI: Derek Anderson stepped to the microphone and mumbled, ''Well, wasn't good enough today.''
Presumably he wasn't referring to his teammates.
Needing only to beat the Cincinnati Bengals to clinch a playoff spot, the Browns' quarterback tied his career-high Sunday with four interceptions as Cleveland fell 19-14 at Paul Brown Stadium.

Cleveland Browns lose to Cincinnati Bengals, need help to make NFL playoffs

Browns drop the ball, need help
Monday, December 24, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Cincinnati -- The Browns left here after a painful 19-14 loss to the Bengals knowing their playoff fate had been intercepted, like a Derek Anderson pass in the wind.
"Today was a big blow for us," said linebacker Willie McGinest. "But it's never over 'til it's over."
By blowing a chance to clinch a postseason berth, the Browns lost control of their destiny.

SCRIBBLES IN MY NOTEBOOK
Easy call: give the ball to Jamal

Monday, December 24, 2007
Cincinnati- Even the best offensive coordinators make a bad call, and Rob Chudzinski did just that at the end of the first half. The Browns were behind, 13-0. Quarterback Derek Anderson had just thrown an interception to set up a Cincinnati TD. With 57 seconds left, the Browns had the ball on their own 20. The Browns had no timeouts and the 29-mph wind was howling. Anderson had already thrown one interception, and was very shaky and short on several other passes. The smart play was run Jamal Lewis a few times, then go into the dressing room and get warm. Instead, Chudzinski called a pass and Leon Hall picked it off. That set up another Bengals TD, making it 19-0 at the half.
Coach Romeo Crennel defended the decision,

High winds of fate can't excuse QB's woes

Monday, December 24, 2007Bud Shaw
Plain Dealer Columnist
Cincinnati - The last time a quarterback looked this inefficient for the Browns, he was buying an umbrella in Seattle two days later.
Derek Anderson's resume away from home continued to suffer Sunday in ways that suggest either jet lag or the same kind of weather conditions that blew Dorothy and Toto to Oz.
It was windy here Sunday in southern Ohio, just not enough to explain why he played his worst game of the season.

It's no mystery: Watson gouges Browns

Monday, December 24, 2007 Dennis Manoloff

Plain Dealer Reporter
Cincinnati- The Browns figured to have caught a break Sunday with running back Rudi Johnson inactive because of injury.
Johnson, after all, had rushed for 1,008 yards in 10 games against the Browns. He had averaged 137.3 yards in his last six against them.
Johnson's replacement, Kenny Watson, entered with six rushes for 22 yards in five career games in the rivalry.

Kellen Winslow thinks Cleveland Browns deserves spot in NFL playoffs more than Tennessee Titans

Monday, December 24, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Cincinnati -- Browns tight end Kellen Winslow thinks it would be a shame for the Tennessee Titans to make the playoffs instead of the Browns.
"We deserve to be in the playoffs," said Winslow. "We think we're the better team, if we were to go against Tennessee. We have a lot to prove, and we deserve it.
"We work our butts off. We've got people with bumps and bruises and people coming back from surgeries. They do, too, but we want it. We really want it. We just didn't take it. It was right there for us to take, and we didn't take it."

Browns bungle bid for playoffs
19-14 loss endangers postseason chances
Cincinnati

-- Not again!
You could hear Browns fans screaming that at their television sets Sunday, watching their team lose, 19-14, to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Not again, a Cleveland team coming oh-so-agonizingly close . . . and coming up short.
Now, we wait.
We wait until next Sunday to see if the 9-6 Browns can beat the 5-10 San Francisco 49ers at Cleveland Browns Stadium, where the home team is a dominant 6-1 this season.
We wait to see if the 9-6 Tennessee Titans can lose or tie at Indianapolis, where the 13-2 Colts would be favored if they didn't already have their playoff spot in place. We wait for the Browns to win in case the Titans somehow tie, for Tennessee to lose or tie and for the football gods finally to smile on Cleveland.

Smith takes blame for setback

Monday, December 24, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Cincinnati -- Browns defensive lineman Shaun Smith didn't have the MVP performance he was hoping for in his own personal Super Bowl against the Bengals, the team that let him go after last season.
In fact, he was mad at himself after the game for helping allow backup running back Kenny Watson to rush for 130 yards and a touchdown.
"I take the blame," said Smith, who jawed with his former teammates all game and was shoved by kicker Shayne Graham during a confrontation.
