Bodden missing, Browns upbeat
Thursday, December 20, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

BEREA Leigh Bodden staked his claim to fame in Cincinnati, when motormouth wideout Chad Johnson called Bodden the best cornerback he had faced.

Unable to parlay that praise into consistent productivity, Bodden wages an ongoing fight against nagging injuries.

This week, it?s a back injury that knocked him out of Thursday?s practice.

?He had a back problem a couple weeks ago,? Head Coach Romeo Crennel said. ?It tightened up again.?

?I?m anticipating (Bodden) being there Sunday.?

Pinpoint snaps help put Cleveland Browns kicker Phil Dawson near team's points mark

Friday, December 21, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
It's been a career year for kicker Phil Dawson, what with two game-winning kicks in overtime, one carom shot off the crossbar support to force an overtime, and two windswept field goals in a crucial 8-0 win in blinding snow, including yet another off the now-famous Dawson Bar.
With two games to go, Dawson has a chance to break Lou Groza's franchise record (for a kicker) of 115 points. Dawson has 110.
Dawson pointed to the locker next to his, where reporters never tread. It belongs to long snapper Ryan Pontbriand.

Role players give Browns first-rate efforts

Friday, December 21, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
While the Browns' galaxy of playmakers on offense nabs the headlines, some of the unsung heroes received some mention at coach Romeo Crennel's daily news conference on Thursday.
Seemingly out of nowhere, Crennel was asked in succession about Steve Heiden, Ryan Tucker and Kevin Shaffer.
Heiden has 11 catches, his lowest total in six seasons with the Browns. The number is down because the tight end has spent most of the year blocking.

Smith loves to needle his former team

BEREA It was 1989, those ancient days when Cleveland and Cincinnati had good NFL teams at the same time.

Hudepohl, Burger and Wiedemann ? the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria of Cincinnati beers ? were at work in the stands. Rowdy Bengal fans tossed snowballs at the visiting Seahawks.

Sam Wyche left his post as Cincinnati?s head coach and seized a microphone.

?You don?t live in Cleveland!? Wyche barked at the crowd. ?You live in Cincinnati!?

Browns notebook: Lewis expecting extra attention from Bengals

Browns running back Jamal Lewis breaks away from the Bengals defense during his 216-yard performance Sept. 16. Lewis is on a roll, averaging 113.8 yards in the past five games.

BEREA, Ohio -- Jamal Lewis rushed for 216 yards when Cleveland hung 51 points on the Cincinnati Bengals during a victory in week two.
The Browns running back sounded certain yesterday that the Bengals would remember that performance, in which he carried 27 times for an 8-yard average and scored a touchdown to help fuel a wild 51-45 win.
"I'm sure they're going to come out and be over-aggressive against the run," Lewis said. "They've had their adjustments from what I've seen on film to the run. The last four or five games, they've been pretty good."

Browns: Everything fell into place in breakout year for Anderson

Friday, December 21, 2007 3:11 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson dived chest-first into the snow Sunday after an 8-0 victory over the Buffalo Bills.
This season has been a blast for the former sixth-round pick.
Anderson, with a surprising performance worthy of Pro Bowl alternate status, has led the Browns to a 9-5 record and a potential playoff appearance in his first season as a starter.
All the stars aligned for Anderson to succeed with the Browns, who picked him up off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens in 2005.

The more the Browns win, the more complicated the team's quarterback situation seems. Derek Anderson would doubtless like a long-term contract -- his agent reportedly has called general manager Phil Savage several times. But doing that would mean that first-round pick Brady Quinn likely will remain a backup.
A couple of weeks ago, Savage told reporters he is leaning toward giving Anderson, who will be a restricted free agent, the highest tender, or $2.562 million. That would guarantee Cleveland first- and third-round picks from any team that offered Anderson a long-term deal and made him its starter. If he took the one-year tender from the Browns, Anderson could be an unrestricted free agent in 2009.

Michael Arace commentary: Recognizing importance of offensive line rescues Browns

Saturday, December 22, 2007 3:08 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

MARK DUNCAN | ASSOCIATED PRESS
Thanks in part to the Browns offensive line, running back Jamal Lewis (31) ranks seventh in the NFL in rushing yards with 1,084.

Verities of life and sport are often forgotten, or neglected, which is why we have teenagers and the Cincinnati Bengals. Here's an example: The Boston Red Sox for 86 years forgot that pitching, and a little bit of speed, and more pitching, are worthwhile attributes. It took them nearly a century, but they regained their memory.
There are many such exhibits, up to and including the Cleveland Browns, who let their offensive line lay fallow for two generations. This was an egregious lapse of memory.

Browns notebook: Vickers grows quickly in his lead blocker role

Saturday, December 22, 2007 2:48 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPA TCH

BEREA, Ohio -- When you think about the Cleveland Browns' high-octane offense, Lawrence Vickers might be the last name that comes to mind.
But the growth and production of the fullback in his first season as a starter has played a significant role for Cleveland.
Vickers has paved the way for running back Jamal Lewis to pass 1,000 yards rushing, and the tandem has brought balance to the Browns. Vickers' performance also has brought him league-wide appreciation as the second alternate for the AFC in the Pro Bowl.

Battle of Ohio takes on playoff meaning today
Saturday, December 22, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CINCINNATI The ?Battle of Ohio? ebbs and flows, rises and falls, fluctuates from comedy to apathy to high drama.

One Sunday, flat and lazy on the Ohio River. Another, 10-foot waves on Lake Erie.

Today: Cincinnati tries to make its year by wrecking Cleveland?s fun.

When Browns vs. Bengals was a novelty, 84,816 flocked to Ohio Stadium to see them in Ohio Stadium ? for a practice game ? in 1972.

In 1980, Cleveland?s Kardiac Kids needed a regular-season win at Cincinnati to avoid Kardiac arrest. A 27-24 thriller sent them to the playoffs.

?The Battle of Ohio? became a punch line in 1999. Cleveland was a hapless expansion team. Cincinnati was the NFL?s worst team of the decade.

The lasting image of the final game at Riverfront Stadium is mounted police overtaking the field as players shook hands. There, in the presence of teams who came out of the season with a combined 7-25 record, horses did what horses do.

Today is a horse of a different color.

Judgment day is here for Browns, Bud Shaw says

Sunday, December 23, 2007Bud Shaw
Plain Dealer Columnist
For all the swagger of their head coach, Butch Davis' Browns entered the postseason like cat burglars - winning on the final day and still needing a boost through an unlatched window.
A more direct entry is available for this Browns team, whose coach goes out of his way to keep the challenge simple.
"All he'll say is, 'Let's go win a football game today,' " Phil Dawson said of Romeo Crennel. "With a young team, that's a great message. I mean, who knows if we're ready for the spotlight. With this head coach, we don't even know if the spotlight is here."

Braylon Edwards delivers on the Cleveland Browns' draft confidence in 2005

Sunday, December 23, 2007
. . . ABOUT BRAYLON EDWARDS
When Phil Savage took over the Browns, he wanted to draft a Pro Bowl player right away. The franchise never had one before since returning in 1999, and Savage and GM Ozzie Newsome made their reputations doing that in Baltimore with 13 Pro Bowlers picked in 11 years. His first pick in 2005 was Braylon Edwards, who went No. 3 in the draft. The Browns had him ranked first, and he has become their first Pro Bowl draft pick of the expansion era.
What if Edwards had been picked by San Francisco (QB Alex Smith) or Miami (RB Ronnie Brown)? "I didn't want to think about that," said Savage. "We would not have picked Smith, because I didn't want a quarterback that high. I liked [linebacker] Demarcus Ware, but making our first pick at No. 3 a kid from Troy State? I wasn't sure about that, either. We thought we'd get Braylon, but if not, it would probably would have been [linebacker David] Pollack."

Browns defense then and now

Sunday, December 23, 2007

The Browns' defense has improved dramatically over the past five weeks or so. Here's proof:
Points: In the first 10 games, the Browns gave up an average of 29.4 points per game. In the past four games, they've surrendered an average of 15.5.
Third downs: In the first 9 games, they allowed third downs to be converted 45 percent of the time. In the past five games, they've allowed only 13-of-62 for 21 percent.

Defensive backs say they're ready for aerial attack

Sunday, December 23, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot

Plain Dealer Reporter
Cincinnati- Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer vowed to come out gunning against the Browns again, but the young defensive backs say they will be ready for him and his star receivers this time.
"The biggest difference you see is in their secondary," said Palmer, who threw for six touchdowns and 401 yards in a 51-45 Browns' victory in Week 2. "It's a different team, a different secondary than we faced Week 2.
"They're all higher draft picks, guys that have athletic ability, speed and quickness to play. Now they're finally figuring out how to play within their system and really coming along."

Winslow's new look' idea falls flat

Sunday, December 23, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards may not like it, but the Browns have no intention of changing their uniforms anytime soon.
Winslow created a fan frenzy when he said in an interview in Penthouse Magazine that the team would update its uniform look.
Winslow was quoted as saying: "You know what? We're in the process of changing all that. Next year, you're gonna see some new uniforms for the Cleveland Browns. This is really a big part of what Braylon Edwards and I have been talking about for a long time. It's time for a change. Sometimes people live in the past in Cleveland. That's fine, but this team is trying to build an identity and start up something new."
