Browns put the 'D' back in Cleveland

ASSOCIATED PRESS

BEREA, Ohio - Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel couldn't recall his coldest moment during a shivering Sunday in the abominable snow game against Buffalo. His warmest one? Easy. "When we stopped them on fourth-and-5," Crennel said, referring to the Bills' final play, a screen pass from the 10-yard-line that was sniffed out and snuffed by Cleveland's defense in the final seconds to preserve the Browns' 8-0 shutout. For most of this season, they've been the CLEVELAN BROWNS - no D, as in defense. But the Browns' beleaguered defense, which has been dwelling at the NFL's statistical bottom for weeks, finally showed up in the club's biggest game to date and moved Cleveland within one win of a playoff spot.

Browns Pride: Cribbs, Edwards selected for Pro Bowl

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

BEREA ? For many NFL teams, having two players named to the Pro Bowl might not be a big deal.
Up until Tuesday, however, the Cleveland Browns had produced exactly one all-star since their expansion rebirth in 1999.

"I'm excited for those guys," linebacker Andra Davis said after learning both receiver Braylon Edwards and return specialist Joshua Cribbs are going to Hawaii in February as members of the AFC team. "They represent guys who could have gone in previous years but didn't because of our record."
Winning works wonders. Edwards goes as a backup, Cribbs as the AFC's special teams designee. Four others are first alternates ? guard Eric Steinbach, rookie left tackle Joe Thomas, tight end Kellen Winslow and quarterback Derek Anderson.

Pro Bowl drought ends 2 Browns named are first for team in last six seasons

Published on Wednesday, Dec 19, 2007
BEREA: On Sunday, ESPN's Keyshawn Johnson called Browns receiver Braylon Edwards his surprise player of 2007.
''If he does not get to his first Pro Bowl this year, crying shame,'' Johnson said.
Happy tears may have been shed instead as Edwards and receiver Joshua Cribbs, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent quarterback from Kent State in 2005, broke Cleveland's six-year Pro Bowl drought. In voting by fans, coaches and players, Cribbs was selected the AFC's starting kickoff returner. Edwards was picked as a reserve behind Randy Moss of New England and Reggie Wayne of Indianapolis.

BEREA: When asked about the Browns' final two games, co-captain Willie McGinest was practically prophetic.

Cleveland Browns' Edwards, Cribbs make Pro Bowl

Wednesday, December 19, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
The Browns' first Pro Bowl players since 2001 entered the NFL in 2005 through doors at opposite ends.
Braylon Edwards was the Browns' top draft pick from Michigan, the third overall player chosen. Everyone said he had Pro Bowl potential.
Josh Cribbs was undrafted out of Kent State. He was a project player whose only hope of making the team was to put his quarterback days behind him and make tackles on kickoffs and punts.

SCOUTING THE BENGALS

One game changed it all for Bengals

Wednesday, December 19, 2007 Tony Grossi

Plain Dealer Reporter
The Cincinnati Bengals left Cleveland on Sept. 16 wondering what hit them after a 51-45 Browns win. It has proved to be a watershed game.
The Browns turned into playoff contenders. The Bengals suffered their first losing season in five years under coach Marvin Lewis. Overall, it's the 12th time in the past 17 years the Bengals have lost more than they've won.
Cincinnati is 5-9 after getting pushed around by 4-10 San Francisco. The Bengals' once-explosive offense is asleep for the winter. It peaked in the first Browns game and has had six games with one or no touchdowns.

?Bungles' back again
But Lewis? team is not devoid of talent
Wednesday, December 19, 2007
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY STAFF WRITER

As the sun sets sadly on Cincinnati?s season, the ?who-dey? chants carry less conviction than ?Kucinich for President.?

The latest bad loss, 20-13 to the 49ers, has reduced the head coach?s status ? in Monopoly-board terms ? from Marvin Gardens to Baltic.

Well, maybe not that much. The Bengals were 19-52, 21-39 and 12-33 under the three head coaches before Marvin Lewis. Even this year?s 5-9 collapse has his nose above river level, at 40-39 overall.

Yet just one season after Bengal tailgaters were telling Northern Ohio visitors nothing less than playoff wins would do, the team is having a classic ?Bungles? year.

?We?re not very disciplined,? quarterback Carson Palmer told reporters Sunday. ?We don?t execute very well.?

Bengals game Super Bowl for Smith
Defensive lineman motivated to do well vs. his former team

By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
BEREA, Ohio -- Browns defensive lineman Shaun Smith is so excited about a game Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals that he's calling it his Super Bowl.
Smith spent two-plus seasons in Cincinnati and got few opportunities before signing with Cleveland last spring as a restricted free agent. The Browns offered Smith a four-year, $8 million contract that the Bengals didn't match.
Smith is coming off his best game, against the Buffalo Bills, in which he tied for the team lead with eight tackles. He already has set career highs this season in tackles (50) and sacks (two).

NFL
Steinbach signifies shift in fortunes
Ex-Bengal's move north helps Browns

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- For the Cleveland Browns, $49 million helped purchase a power shift within the AFC North.
That's how much the Browns spent on a seven-year contract to land former Cincinnati Bengals guard Eric Steinbach as an unrestricted free agent. The move upgraded the Browns' roster while hurting their divisional rival.
Behind Steinbach, who is a Pro Bowl alternate, Cleveland has a high-scoring offense and one of the league's best offensive lines.

Carson Palmer may have done Browns coach Romeo Crennel a favor Wednesday.
The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback assured everybody that his team doesn't intend to lie down Sunday and let the Browns clinch a spot in the playoffs in Paul Brown Stadium.
Crennel has preached this gospel to his players. Hearing it from an opponent should ensure it sinks in.
"It's an exciting game for us to play because we have nothing to lose," Palmer said on a conference call. "We're coming out firing on all cylinders and really playing like we have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

BROWNS INSIDER
LeCharles Bentley's contract length reduced, cap space grows for Cleveland Browns

Thursday, December 20, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
The Browns have shortened center LeCharles Bentley's contract by three years and he can now become an unrestricted free agent after the 2008 season, according to NFL Players Association records.
The restructured deal will pay Bentley the NFL minimum for his position ($605,000) next season, but includes incentives that can earn him the $4 million he was due to make in base salary and roster bonus.
The new deal protects the Browns from having to pay Bentley $4 million in the event he can't play, yet it allows him to make up the money if he's healthy.

Following a fine line to success
Browns' left side duo of Thomas, Steinbach anchor team strength
By Marla Ridenour

Published on Thursday, Dec 20, 2007
BEREA: When Browns running back Jamal Lewis saw film clips of University of Wisconsin left tackle Joe Thomas on draft day, Lewis noticed his balance and how he used his hands and thought Thomas could play right away.
Now Lewis is comparing the rookie to the future hall of famer he ran behind for six years in Baltimore.
''Jonathan Ogden is a great player, they have pretty much the same body type, same build. I think he is that next Jonathan Ogden,'' Lewis said Wednesday. He was ignoring 6-foot-9, 345-pound Ogden's three inches and 30 pounds on Thomas and their contrasting styles.

Bengals will be 'gunning,' says QB Palmer
He expects team to be loose, ready to knock Browns off pedestal
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Thursday, Dec 20, 2007
BEREA: Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer gave the Browns more reason to be wary of the matchup Sunday in Paul Brown Stadium when he vowed Wednesday, ''We're going to come out gunning.''
The Bengals have won five of the past six meetings, but the Browns prevailed 51-45 on Sept. 16. Revenge could be on the Bengals' minds.
''I don't know if 'get even' is the right word,'' Palmer said on a conference call. ''It's an exciting game for us to play in. We're coming out firing on all cylinders and really playing like we've got nothing to lose and everything to gain.
