Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Browns drop ball Was a win over Bengals too much to ask? Now Cleveland fans must root for Colts
By Patrick McManamon

BEREA: Well, as Stanley once said to Oliver, this is another fine mess you've gotten us into, Ollie.
The Browns have made a mess of their playoff chances by botching a game in Cincinnati.
Now there are a lot of ifs and ands, and wondering what and why.
And a game will be played Sunday in Cleveland Stadium that means nothing whatsoever to the Browns' playoff chances.
Well, there's a slim chance it could mean something.
If the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts tie Sunday night ? yes, Sunday night, everyone has to wait until late Sunday to know the Browns' fate ? then the Browns would need a win over the San Francisco 49ers to reach the playoffs.

Ken Dorsey

BEREA, Ohio -- It's a thankless job, but Ken Dorsey is happy to do it.

The third-string quarterback for the Cleveland Browns has been a quiet mentor this season to starter Derek Anderson and rookie Brady Quinn.
There are no statistics to measure Dorsey's contribution. He has thrown just one pass (an incompletion) for the Browns the past two years. Yet Dorsey takes a measure of pride in Anderson (3,635 passing yards, 28 touchdowns) becoming a Pro Bowl alternate in his first full year as a starter and Quinn's development in his rookie season.
"It's all about guys doing their part on the team to win," Dorsey said. "That's my part and I'm fine with that. I enjoy doing all this stuff, and if I didn't, I wouldn't want to be here."

NFL
It's a dream undeterred for Browns sub Dinkins

Wednesday, December 26, 2007 Mark Gillispie
Plain Dealer Reporter
Darnell Dinkins, a reserve tight end for the Browns, has grown accustomed to overcoming obstacles during his improbable journey to the NFL.
A star quarterback at Schenley High School in Pittsburgh, he was buried deep on the depth chart at that position after arriving at Pitt and ended up playing safety after spending some time at wide receiver and linebacker.
Dinkins was a starter for two seasons at Pitt, but no NFL teams came calling after his college career ended.

Sacrifice feels good when wins are result
Heiden among Browns adjusting to new positions without complaint
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Wednesday, Dec 26, 2007
BEREA: Tight end Steve Heiden need only step on the scale to measure what he's sacrificed for the 2007 Browns.
One of the longest-tenured players with six years in Cleveland, Heiden put on 10 to 12 pounds so he would be better suited for his role as a blocker this season.
After catching 156 passes in his eight-year career, 142 with the Browns, Heiden noticed in training camp that Kellen Winslow had recovered from off-season microfracture surgery on his right knee. Heiden realized that new offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski was going to feature Winslow in his attack.
Heiden knew that meant it was time to beef up.

Browns' Thompson would like to stay, but needs to play
Wednesday, December 26, 2007
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Buffalo was trying to shatter Cleveland?s season with an ice ball.

The Bills were deep in Browns territory with a chance to send the Snow Bowl to overtime, but it was fourth down. Time was almost gone. There was one more chance.

Buffalo bet on beating linebacker Chaun Thompson with a screen pass.

?They ran the same play earlier,? Thompson said. ?Melvin Fowler (Buffalo?s center) cut block me. They got a couple yards.?

A couple? Running back Fred Jackson had gained 33 yards on two previous catches.

Kellen Winslow thinks Cleveland Browns deserves spot in NFL playoffs more than Tennessee Titans

Monday, December 24, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Cincinnati -- Browns tight end Kellen Winslow thinks it would be a shame for the Tennessee Titans to make the playoffs instead of the Browns.
"We deserve to be in the playoffs," said Winslow. "We think we're the better team, if we were to go against Tennessee. We have a lot to prove, and we deserve it.
"We work our butts off. We've got people with bumps and bruises and people coming back from surgeries. They do, too, but we want it. We really want it. We just didn't take it. It was right there for us to take, and we didn't take it."

Browns notebook: Dorsey gets three-year contract extension

Thursday, December 27, 2007 3:08 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- The Browns signed third-string quarterback Ken Dorsey to a three-year contract extension yesterday that will keep him in Cleveland through 2010.
Dorsey has thrown one pass the past two seasons with Cleveland but played an important role behind the scenes this year helping develop Derek Anderson and rookie Brady Quinn.

Browns: Quinn will be ready if called on to play
Cleveland might look at QB in season finale
Thursday, December 27, 2007 3:23 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns quarterback Derek Anderson will start Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, and coach Romeo Crennel was noncommittal yesterday about whether fans would see the much-anticipated debut of rookie Brady Quinn.
Cleveland's first-round pick (No. 22 overall) hasn't played a down this season because of Anderson's success, but there are several reasons Quinn could play in Sunday's regular-season finale.

ANDERSON OR QUINN IN REGULAR-SEASON FINALE?
There's no debate: It's D.A.

Thursday, December 27, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
One final home game, against 5-10 San Francisco. The Browns' playoff implications are practically nil. The only thing that affects their playoff berth is Tennessee's outcome against Indianapolis later that night.
Sounds like an opportunity to get rookie Brady Quinn some regular-season game experience, no?
The Browns don't see it that way.

A bad day can't alter QB's status

Start Brady Quinn Sunday?
Some fans need to be re minded that the Browns still have a decent chance of making the playoffs, that they need to take the field Sunday against San Francisco assuming they will be in the postseason.
They have to play to win, and they have to play their best guys.

BROWNS INSIDER
Bill's guy? Crennel brushes off talk of Parcells

Thursday, December 27, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Coach Romeo Crennel was asked Wednesday about a report on profootballtalk.com that he's Bill Parcells' No. 1 choice to replace Cam Cameron as head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
"I haven't heard it and rumors are rumors," said Crennel. "Everybody has their opinion on that. I haven't heard anything about that."
But what if Parcells, the Dolphins' new vice president of football operations, came calling?

Quinn still waiting for his chance

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Thursday, December 27, 2007
BEREA ? Is this the week rookie quarterback Brady Quinn gets in a game?
He hopes so. Then again, he always hopes so.

"I'm a quarterback," Quinn said Wednesday. "Every second of the game, you're always wishing you were playing. This game is no different than any other."
With the Browns' regular-season finale against the San Francisco 49ers just about meaningless in any way that affects the playoffs, Quinn supporters think now would be a good time to see what the first-round draft pick from Notre Dame can do.
Head coach Romeo Crennel says he'll wait to see how the game goes.

Browns, 49ers game has a 'strange' feel to it

Cleveland seeks 10th win; but game probably has no bearing on the Browns making playoffs.

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Thursday, December 27, 2007

BEREA ? The Cleveland Browns can make the playoffs Sunday, but their home game against the San Francisco 49ers probably won't have anything to do with it.
Yes, it's going to be an unusual day.

"Strange," mused defensive lineman Shaun Smith. "I have faith we'll be in. Everything's been bouncing in our favor and I think it'll bounce in our favor again."
Not until late Sunday evening, when the Tennessee Titans conclude their 8 p.m. nationally televised business with the Indianapolis Colts, will the Browns learn whether they will be working the next day or cleaning out their lockers.
