Plenty of motivation to win

Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer
12.26.2007

The game might end up meaning little in terms of the playoffs, but that doesn't mean the Browns don't feel like they're playing for a lot Sunday during the regular season finale against the San Francisco 49ers.
While the fate of their season won't be decided until later in the night with the outcome of the Titans-Colts Sunday night game, the Browns will still be playing for a win earlier in the afternoon.
The Browns surrendered the chance to clinch a playoff spot Sunday during a 19-14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Now, they must hope for Titans loss to the Colts to secure a spot.

Starting D-linemen miss practice

Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer
12.27.2007

The Browns were without all three of their starters along the defensive line Wednesday in preparation for Sunday's game against the 49ers.
Defensive ends Robaire Smith (neck) and Orpheus Roye (foot) and nose tackle Shaun Smith (biceps) each missed practice Wednesday.
The team lost its previous starting nose tackle Ethan Kelley for the season Monday to a knee injury.
The team signed veteran defensive lineman Bobby Williams and moved defensive lineman Melila Purcell from the practice squad to the active roster Wednesday to beef up the ailing unit.

Vote Cribbs for 'Super ad'

12.27.2007

For the second year in a row, the NFL is asking fans to pick the pitch that will become its Super Bowl commercial. Rather than fans presenting ideas like last year, for the first-time ever, NFL players will be going head-to-head off the field with their pitches for the NFL's Super Bowl XLII commercial.

Two Browns, 49ers QB miss practice again

Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
12.27.2007

Three Browns starters returned to practice Thursday after missing Wednesday.
Joe Jurevicius (knee), Robaire Smith (neck) and Shaun Smith (biceps) practiced on a limited basis, as did Kellen Winslow (knee).
Antwan Peek (ankle) and Orpheus Roye (knee) missed practice for the second consecutive day.
49ers QB Shaun Hill(back) missed his second straight practice. If Hill can't play Sunday, the 49ers would start Chris Weinke, whom they signed 15 days ago.

Just who is Jim Sorgi?

Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer 12.27.2007

Like it or not, the Browns' 2007 season rests heavily in the hands of a quarterback who has played only 13 NFL games.
Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy said earlier in the week that backup quarterback Jim Sorgi will play at least a half during the team's season finale vs. Tennessee.
A Titans win means the Browns' season is over. If the Colts prevail, the Browns are in the playoffs.
So, besides the backup to a future Hall of Fame quarterback, just who is Jim Sorgi?

Preview: Browns vs. 49ers

Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
12.27.2007

Sunday's regular season finale brings the 2007 Browns an opportunity to match their win total from the previous two seasons combined and win 10 games in a season for the first time since 1994.
But the Browns will have to play the waiting game Sunday, too.
Their 1 p.m. game with the 49ers might also be one final tuneup for the postseason, but the Browns won't know that until they know the result of the Titans-Colts game Sunday night in Indianapolis. If the Titans win, the Browns are out of the playoffs. If the Colts win, the Browns are in.

Derek Anderson: From humble beginnings to budding star

Derek Anderson has emerged as one of the NFL's most productive QBs. Who saw that coming?

BEREA, Ohio -- Derek Anderson, all 6-foot-6 of him, walked into the Cleveland Browns' television studio a few weeks ago wearing one of those "Fargo"-esque, fur-lined aviator hats, the kind with the big ear flaps. Browns communication manager Amy Palcic -- just this side of mortified -- groaned.
Anderson, who also had a bit of a beard going, bears a striking resemblance to -- and there is no way around this -- the cartoon character Goofy. This is the single word that comes up most often when folks discuss the Browns' transcendent quarterback.
"If you're going to name a Disney character after him," said wide receiver Joe Jurevicius, "it's definitely Goofy."
And Anderson not only looks the part, it's his world view.
"I just try to keep it loose," Anderson said. "If you get tight then you start second-guessing things. I've realized that I play better when I play loose."
Said Browns general manager Phil Savage: "The tighter the game gets, the looser he is. That's a great quality to have."
Before the 2007 season there wasn't much empirical evidence that Anderson was such a cool customer. He had played in only five games in three NFL seasons and seemed destined to sit behind Charlie Frye and first-round draft choice Brady Quinn.

Craving more sacks

Posted by Mary Kay Cabot, Plain Dealer Reporter December 29, 2007 07:14AM

Categories: Browns

Browns linebacker Kamerion Wimbley vowed Friday to work harder in the off-season to return to the sack machine he was last year as a rookie.
With a team-high five sacks heading into Sunday's finale against the 49ers, Wimbley is far short of his goal of 16 -- and well below the franchise rookie record of 11 he had last year.
"It just makes me hungrier," said Wimbley, the 13th overall pick in 2006. "That's one of the positive things I'll take from this year, is just to go back out and work harder. In the off-season, I'll have my mind set to try to do everything I can to achieve those goals."

Browns fans rooting for Indianapolis Colts on Sunday

Saturday, December 29, 2007 John Horton
Plain Dealer Reporter
It sounded . . . well, just a bit awkward. But James Foreman of Euclid, president of the Lake Erie Browns Backers, swallowed hard and spit out the words: "I am a Colts fan."
A traitor? Nah. Just a man who knows the facts.
Rooting for the Browns means bleeding a little blue and white on Sunday. The home team's playoff fate rests solely in the hands of the Indianapolis Colts, the guys with the horseshoes on their helmets. The Cleveland faithful hope that logo's a lucky charm.

BROWNS INSIDER
Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis is in team's plan for 2008, source says

Saturday, December 29, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
The Browns intend to bring running back Jamal Lewis back next season, a source said Friday.
Lewis, with 1,176 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, is on pace for his fourth-highest career rushing total of 1,260 yards despite missing one full game and lasting only one play of another before leaving with a foot injury.
Lewis' one-year contract, which increased from $3.5 million to $5 million with incentives, is up after this season. He will be an unrestricted free agent in March.

Here?s a draft that paid off
Edwards looking like a good choice

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA The Browns used to be famous for letting the big fish slip away.

Their 2007 reversal of fortune happened in part because a big one slid to them.

The 2005 draft comes into focus this week with the Browns hosting the 49ers on Sunday.

San Francisco had the No. 1 overall pick, gambling on a quarterback, Alex Smith, who might have been the product of Utah opponents having no answer for Urban Meyer?s system.

Braylon Edwards, who went to Cleveland after Miami drafted running back Ronnie Brown at No. 2, was pure talent everyone could see.

Edwards took it as a snub. After Cleveland picked him, he found a future NFL schedule so he could find out when the Browns would face San Francisco.

That game is here.

Browns report Dec. 29
Saturday, December 29, 2007
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

Back to build on?

Jamal Lewis, who won a Super Bowl as a Ravens rookie in 2000, is a main reason the Browns went from 4-12 without him to the cusp of the playoffs.

?This year is definitely a stepping stone for this organization,? he said. ?I think there will be a lot of good years to come.?

But will he have even one more year as a Brown? He is in limbo on a one-year contract, uncertain whether Sunday will mark his last game as a Brown.

?Wait one more game, then let everything stack up,? he said.

Unbeaten Browns
Cleveland went 14-0 in former AAFC
Saturday, December 29, 2007
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Nobody talks about Cleveland?s unbeaten team, but there was one, and it rocked the foundation of the early NFL.

The 1948 Browns went 14-0 in the regular season and won their league title game, 49-7.

The achievement is dismissed because it happened in the All-America Football Conference. It was a big-city autumn league sniffed at by the one whose initials were NFL.

The 49ers were loaded with talent and became the Browns? biggest AAFC rival. Cleveland?s closest calls in 1948 came in two games against the Niners. It?s hard to say the game meant nothing, in that 82,769 saw the Browns beat San Francisco at Cleveland.

Chris Weinke to start for 49ers vs. Browns
Friday, December 28, 2007

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) ? Chris Weinke will be the 49ers? fourth starting quarterback this season when he replaces the injured Shaun Hill at Cleveland on Sunday.

Weinke, the former Heisman Trophy winner and Carolina quarterback, signed with the 49ers (5-10) just two weeks ago. He will follow Alex Smith, Trent Dilfer and Hill, who won his first two NFL starts in the last two weeks, as the starting quarterback for San Francisco this season.

Hill, the sixth-year pro who hadn?t thrown an NFL pass until this month, will miss San Francisco?s season finale with back spasms caused by three small fractures incurred from a hard hit in last week?s victory over Tampa Bay. Dilfer is out for the season with a concussion, and Smith is on injured reserve with a separated shoulder.

Browns' defense shows improvement

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Saturday, December 29, 2007

BEREA ? Glancing at the NFL's overall defensive statistics, your eyes travel all the way down the list of 32 teams before getting to the Browns.
Yes, it's accurate to say they have given up more yards than any team this season. But it's also misleading, because it ignores the reality of how the defense is playing now.
Granted, they haven't faced many offensive juggernauts and a blizzard came in handy, but only once in the past five games have the Browns given up more than 20 points ? a triumph considering they were torched for nearly 30 points, on average, through the first 10.
"The guys have really worked hard to improve all year, and I think now is the time that it's kind of showing up a little bit," defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said.
Over the past five games, opponents are averaging 16.2 points.
In Sunday's devastating 19-14 loss to Cincinnati, the defense gave up two touchdowns but only after interceptions thrown by Derek Anderson positioned the Bengals deep in Browns territory, once at the five-yard line.
