Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Browns unlikely to give Quinn shot now Starting QB, players don't expect backup to play against 49ers
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Thursday, Dec 27, 2007
BEREA: Brady Quinn might have the best-selling Browns jersey in town, a national Subway commercial and his face on the cover of Cleveland Magazine's ''Most Interesting People'' issue with fellow rookie Joe Thomas.
Imagine the hoopla if Quinn had taken a snap.
But coach Romeo Crennel does not seem inclined to change that Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers even though the game means almost nothing to the Browns' playoff fortunes. To make the postseason for the first time since 2002, the Browns (9-6) need the Indianapolis Colts to beat or tie the Tennessee Titans.

Spare the indignation Browns can't blame Colts for resting starters in game against Titans
By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sports columnist
Published on Thursday, Dec 27, 2007

BEREA: It would be easy to get all indignant about the situation in which the Browns find themselves.
Their game Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers has no bearing on the playoffs.
The Tennessee Titans game Sunday night against the host Indianapolis Colts does.
But the Colts already have clinched a playoff spot, so their coach, Tony Dungy, will not be playing his starters the entire game.
How can this happen?
How can the NFL allow it?
How can a playoff spot be determined by (gasp) backups?
Easy.
It just will be.
Deal with it.

Lost chance tough to get over Against 49ers on Sunday, Browns still hope to end season on winning note
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Thursday, Dec 27, 2007

BEREA: Throwing away a chance to clinch a playoff berth with a 19-14 loss at Cincinnati is not easy for the Browns to get over, receiver Braylon Edwards said.
''There is a hangover, to be honest,'' Edwards said Wednesday. ''We had a situation to shore up a playoff spot. We wanted to get it done on Sunday to be able to sit back and relax. Not relax too much and try to lose, but we would have known we were in.
''It is hanging over us, but we're professionals and we know we have to come out strong in practice today. By the time the whistle blows at 1 o'clock, we'll have to forget about it.''
The Browns (9-6) host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in a game that means almost nothing to their playoff hopes. The Browns must root for the Indianapolis Colts to win at home against the Tennessee Titans.
Quarterback Derek Anderson, who threw four interceptions against the Bengals, said morale was good.

Sorgi suddenly has a fan club

Colts backup QB could play big role in whether Browns make the postseason

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Friday, December 28, 2007

BEREA ? Today's trivia question: Who in the world is Jim Sorgi?
It made the rounds Thursday in the Cleveland Browns' locker room.

Up until a few days ago, the query would have been met with blank stares. Joe Thomas was Sorgi's college teammate for a year at Wisconsin. Guard Eric Steinbach (Iowa) and defensive lineman Simon Fraser (Ohio State) remember him from the Big Ten.
Everybody else would have been guessing.
But with the Indianapolis Colts' backup quarterback holding the Browns' playoff fate in his hands to some degree, if he didn't have a fan club before, he has one now.

Derek Anderson is player of year Football writers give Good Guy Award to kicker Phil Dawson
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Friday, Dec 28, 2007
Quarterback Derek Anderson was voted the Browns' player of the year, and kicker Phil Dawson received the Dino Lucarelli Good Guy Award from the Cleveland chapter of the Professional Football Writers of America.
Anderson follows Kamerion Wimbley (2006), Reuben Droughns, Robert Griffith, Andra Davis, William Green and Jamir Miller.
''That's pretty cool,'' Anderson said. ''Hopefully we can finish it off right.''
Dawson has always been available to talk, even after poor performances on Sundays.

Browns players suddenly big fans of Colts Cleveland fans to cheer for backup quarterback to beat Titans on Sunday
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Friday, Dec 28, 2007
BEREA: Browns quarterback Derek Anderson wondered if he should send Jim Sorgi a box of Christmas cookies.
Left tackle Joe Thomas was tempted to call his teammate for one season at the University of Wisconsin, but he doesn't want to put any extra pressure on him.
''He probably wouldn't remember me,'' Thomas said.
The Browns (9-6) will try to concentrate on their home game Sunday afternoon against the San Francisco 49ers, but their season comes down to rooting for the Indianapolis Colts, who host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday night in the final regular-season game.

BROWNS INSIDER
Season finale against San Francisco 49ers motivates Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis

Friday, December 28, 2007
BROWNS INSIDER
Season finale is Lewis' motivator
Will Sunday's game against the 49ers be Jamal Lewis' last appearance in Cleveland in a Browns uniform?

He doesn't know, but if it is, he wants to go out with a bang.
"Most definitely," Lewis said. "I'd like to go out with a win. This is the type of game that sets the tone for the next season, if that's where we're going."
Despite missing essentially three games with a foot injury, Lewis has climbed to seventh in the NFL with 1,176 rushing yards. He is tied for sixth with nine touchdowns on the ground.

So how does Anderson rate?
Off to sizzling start, Browns QB is struggling down the stretch

BEREA It?s debatable whether Derek Anderson deserves to be the Browns Player of the Year. According to the local chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America, he is.

The 24-year-old quarterback was told of the award Thursday. Voting was conducted Sunday in the Cincinnati press box, shortly before Anderson threw four interceptions.

Pro Bowlers Braylon Edwards and Joshua Cribbs rated consideration. So did Pro Bowl alternates Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach, who have had Anderson?s back. He has been sacked just four times in the last eight games.

So did Jamal Lewis, who has a chance to rush for more yards than any Browns player since Jim Brown in 1965.

Anderson named Browns MVP
Thursday, December 27, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA The honor quarterback Derek Anderson received Thursday ? Browns Player of the Year, as voted on by the local chapter of the Pro Football writers of America ? isn?t quite up there with the Sports Illustrated jinx.

However, it has been a mixed blessing.

The award was conceived in 2001. Its first recipient, Jamir Miller, blew out an Achilles tendon during the 2002 preseason.

William Green was Player of the Year as a 2002 rookie. He was on his way out by 2005, when his season rushing total was 78 yards.

Safety Robert Griffith won in 2004 and was playing elsewhere in 2005. Reuben Droughns won with a career year in 2005 and came back with a tortured 2006.

2002 playoff run similar, but different
BROWNS NOTEBOOK
Thursday, December 27, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA This isn?t quite d?j? vu with a 2002 twist.

The Browns? Sunday thrill ride into playoff fun ? or one-and-done ? comes on the back of a whole different animal.

The 2002 Browns wobbled into the playoffs through assorted backdoors.

They were 4-5 at one point and were left for dead when a 13-6 home loss to Carolina sank them to 6-6.

On the final Sunday, they needed a win and specific outcomes in two other games, one after their game was over, to get in.

The ?07 Browns, like the ?02 edition, were 2-3 at one point. The ?07 team, though, won five of six from there to get to 7-4. These Browns have spent nearly two months knowing their playoff chances were good.

Browns: Defense rises after hitting rock bottom
Browns are up notch from last in ratings
Friday, December 28, 2007 2:57 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- In the past three games, the Cleveland Browns have allowed fewer points than Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Indianapolis, Dallas and Green Bay. Lost in Cleveland's costly 19-14 loss on Sunday in Cincinnati was the steady improvement by the defense, which is ranked No. 31 in the NFL. Until their recent run, the Browns were ranked last at No. 32 for nine consecutive weeks.

Notebook: Browns wish Colts backup quarterback all the best

Friday, December 28, 2007 2:57 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- Indianapolis Colts backup quarterback Jim Sorgi is noticeably on the minds of Cleveland Browns players this week. Cleveland's playoff hopes will rest in the hands of the inexperienced quarterback from Wisconsin when the Colts play host to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday night. A Tennessee loss would give Cleveland the final AFC wild-card spot.

Lewis climbing the record books

Steve King, Staff Writer
12.26.2007

Though it has gone virtually unnoticed, Jamal Lewis is doing a good job of running his way through the Browns record book.

After rushing for 92 yards in Sunday's 19-14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, the veteran running back now has 1,176 yards in his first year with the team. At that rate, with one game left -- on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers at Cleveland Browns Stadium -- Lewis is on track to finish with 1,254 yards.

If he does that, then he will have recorded the ninth-most yards by a Brown in a season. Pro Football Hall of Famer Leroy Kelly is currently ninth with 1,239 yards in 1968. Right behind him in 10th is Reuben Droughns, who had 1,232 in 2005.

Browns sign veteran Hamilton

Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer
12.26.2007

The Browns have filled two vacant roster spots with defensive linemen to boost an ailing unit.
Wednesday, the team signed 13-year NFL veteran Bobby Hamilton and moved 2007 sixth-round draft pick Melila Purcell from the practice squad to the active roster.
Hamilton (6-feet-5, 285 pounds) has played in 164 NFL games with 102 starts for the Jets, Patriots and Raiders and was a part of two Pats Super Bowl championship teams with Browns head coach Romeo Crennel as his defensive coordinator.
