Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Frye, Anderson have 50-50 shot at starting preseason opener

CLEVELAND -- With the Cleveland Browns' quarterback derby a dead heat, coach Romeo Crennel will flip a coin to decide if Charlie Frye or Derek Anderson starts Saturday's exhibition game against Kansas City. "That's the fairest way," he said.
Who makes the call, coach?

"Maybe we'll play rock, paper, scissors for that," Crennel cracked.

A hopscotch tournament is not planned.

I will say it right now: SUPERBOWL!!!!!!!!!! :wink2:

charlie actually played decent, just hope he keeps it up.

Charlie royally fucked up the last drive of the 1st half too, but otherwise you are correct....

The special teams looked very good last night too and maybe, just maybe, the defense will be above average (we can always hope right?).

There are plenty of questions about the Brown to be answered and here is a big one.

O-line again shaky
Browns are vulnerable without Steinbach, Tucker
Published on Saturday, Aug 11, 2007

CLEVELAND: Offensive lines seem to change in a hurry in Cleveland.
Think back to 1999.
At that point, Dwight Clark did what he could to build a line in a hurry. He drafted Jim Pyne first in the expansion draft, then signed three free agents: center Dave Wohlabaugh and tackles Orlando Brown and Lomas Brown.
His thinking: Starting a team meant starting upfront, so he gave a lot of money to those players.
It didn't work.
Tim Couch got sacked a zillion times as a rookie, and the line has remained unsettled.
As this year's training camp approached, though, things finally seemed to come together.
General Manager Phil Savage brought in two new guards, Eric Steinbach and Seth McKinney, and he drafted tackle Joe Thomas. They would be added to the mix with Ryan Tucker, Kevin Shaffer and Hank Fraley.
It would be a solid group, at least on paper.
The group that starts tonight's preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs will not be that group, however. Watching them practice Thursday, they looked like a collection of players who had gone from solid to shaky.
Steinbach was in the training room, apparently working to rehab a sprained knee ligament.

My take on the game

I watched the game last night and there was no contest between who was the better QB. It was hands-down Charlie and if Anderson does not improve in the preseason I think that the Browns will keep Dorsey. He played fairly well in the second half and could serve as a mentor for both Charlie and BQ.

The O-line gave pretty good pass protection but the running game still needs a lot of improvement. I would like to see the kid from Wake Forest who played in NFL Europe last year get more of a chance at running back kickoffs. Cribbs did not impress me and the guy from NFL Europe showed some speed in his TD run back.

The D line still needs improvement against the running game. Kansas City was not a good test at all because they did not have a QB who could throw. The Browns linebacking crew and defensive backs looked pretty good but the backs will get a good test next week against the Lions.
