Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

SI.com - Writers - Peter King: Quinn holdout big story of Browns camp - Monday July 30, 2007 1:22PM
I was reading Peter King's camp report card and he predicts that Jamal Lewis is going to rush for atleast 1,300 yards this year. Lewis told King that he was down to 239 from 251 and its the best he has felt in a long time. King said that is looked like Lewis had a big chip on his shoulder and is really looking forward to proving the Ravens wrong. Personally I don't think that 1,300 yards is a stretch at all considering the Browns finally have a decent line.

For any Browns fan who hasn't seen it, Sports Time Ohio is running a show called Training Camp Daily. My DVR is set up to record all new episodes, and it is recording about 3 or 4 episodes a day. I have yet to get a repeat, and it's a pretty cool way to catch up on what's happening in Berea. Jim Donovan, Doug Dieken, and Sam Rutigliano have been covering all aspects of the team, as well as interviews with players and coaches. Is it September yet?

EDIT: Common sense came knocking, and no, they are not airing 3 to 4 new episodes per day....pfft, come on schwab....

BROWNS TRAINING CAMP: Tucker likes what he sees
Wednesday, August 1, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

BEREA Browns right tackle Ryan Tucker let out a secret under the blast-furnace sun Tuesday.

?I?ve played a lot of pass rushers,? Tucker said as sweat streamed down his face. ?Peek?s got it all, baby.?

In Tucker?s mind, Antwan Peek isn?t the guy who spent four forgettable years with the Houston Texans. He?s the force who helped the Cincinnati Bearcats put Ohio State on the ropes in a near-loss that would have cost the Buckeyes a national title.

He?s the free agent who will get Cleveland?s pass rush over the hump.

?Peek is a helluva pass rusher,? Tucker said.

?I?m so happy I get to work against that guy. He?s gonna take my game to another level. With him, Kamerion Wimbley and Willie McGinest ... it?s gonna be fun, man. I?m telling ya.?

Defensive end Orpheus Roye to have surgery
UPDATE: 11:47 AM, Wednesday, August 1, 2007
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA The thin orange line got dangerously thinner today.

Defensive end Orpheus Roye, a vital starter on a three-man front with age and depth issues, will have arthroscopic knee surgery, Head Coach Romeo Crennel said a few minutes after today?s morning practice.

?He has some clicking in the knee,?? Crennel said. ?We?re gonna clean it out (Thursday) morning and see if we can get him back for the regular season.??

Crennel said Roye?s problem is a ?normal football situation?? that entails removing loose cartilage.

The only player who has been with the Browns longer than Roye is kicker Phil Dawson. Roye arguably has been the most consistent performer of the expansion era.

He might be wearing down, though, at age 34. He battled injuries to both knees in 2006 and ultimately sat out six games, including the last three.

Browns may pick starting QB soon
Decision could come after 1st preseason game
By Patrick McManamonBeacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Wednesday, Aug 01, 2007
BEREA: The Browns' quarterback situation might be decided sooner than expected. General Manager Phil Savage said Tuesday that the Browns would like to have a pretty good idea of the team's direction at quarterback after the first preseason game Aug. 11.
''We'd like to get this thing narrowed down pretty quick,'' Savage said.
If the Browns stick to that plan, Derek Anderson and Charlie Frye have 10 more practices and one game to try to win the job for the opener.
An early decision would not seem, though, to bode well for Brady Quinn, who has not yet signed a contract.
''I can't answer that,'' Savage said when asked how the situation would affect Quinn. Quinn's absence can't help. He missed four days of ''rookie camp'' and now has missed five more days of full-team camp.

BROWNS INSIDER
Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis on cover of Sports Illustrated

Thursday, August 02, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Running back Jamal Lewis was surprised Monday to hear he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated's fantasy football issue.
"I hadn't heard that yet," said Lewis. "That's news to me. That's a great accomplishment but I think it does more to expose the Browns more than myself, to put this team out there, just to let people know we're coming and that we're going to be a threat this year."
How many times has Lewis been on the SI cover?

BROWNS TRAINING CAMP
Cleveland Browns defensive end Orpheus Roye to miss preseason after knee surgery

Thursday, August 02, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Big O has just become the Big Uh-O.
Browns left end Orpheus Roye, a 12-year pro, will undergo arthroscopic today on his right knee and be lost for the rest of the preseason.
It represents a huge blow to the team's biggest area of concern: the defensive line of its 3-4 defense. The three starters are so old they qualify for a senior discount in the Browns' cafeteria line.

BROWNS TRAINING CAMP
Cleveland Browns happy with Shaun Smith in the middle

Wednesday, August 01, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Nose tackles are supposed to be the biggest guys on the team. Part of their job description is to take up as much space as they can along the defensive front.
Shaun Smith looks the part. Signed in free agency off the Cincinnati Bengals' bench, Smith checked in at his first Browns training camp at 6-2 and 325 pounds. He's squatty and wide, just what coaches want in the middle of a three-man defensive front.
But for the past two years Smith has been dwarfed by the players ahead of him on the depth chart. In Cincinnati, he played behind Sam Adams, who was 6-3 and 350 pounds. Here Smith is listed second to starter Ted Washington, who is 6-5 and 375.

Browns two-minute drill

Rapid-fire questions with ?

Kamerion Wimbley

6 feet 3, 260 pounds, OLB

? College: Florida State
? NFL experience: 2 years
? Notable: Wimbley set a Browns rookie record last year with 11 sacks.
Is anything less than 11 sacks a disappointment for you?
Well, I don't think so. I'm setting a standard and hopefully I can go out and improve on that and get more. But my goal is to be a better overall football player, not just to get sacks. Of course that's nice and one of the reasons they brought me in here, so if I achieve that goal that will be great.

Browns' Tucker violates NFL steroid policy

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns offensive tackle Ryan Tucker was suspended Friday for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's steroid policy.

Tucker, one of Cleveland's leaders on the field and in the locker room, missed part of last season with what the team called a "mental disorder." He says he is now healthy and is eligible to return to the roster Oct. 1, one day after the Browns host the Baltimore Ravens.

"I didn't intend to compromise the integrity of the NFL, my team," Tucker said following Friday's morning practice. "I want to apologize to the fans, my family. It's been a long road. I was pretty down and out last year, and in my attempt to come back I took a banned substance. I'm going to fulfill this punishment and get it behind me."

Tucker will be allowed to stay with the Browns during training camp and preseason. However, coach Romeo Crennel said the 32-year-old player may not participate in team activities once the suspension without pay starts Sept. 1.

Tucker won a Super Bowl ring with the St. Louis Rams and has been a rock at right tackle for the Browns since joining them as a free agent in 2002. The 11-year veteran started all 16 games in 2005, and in 2003 he was the only Cleveland offensive player to be on the field for every snap.

He talked about "getting the respect and trust back of my teammates" earlier this week, but he wouldn't elaborate.

Way to go :roll1:
