Cleveland Browns tackle Joe Thomas can flash a smile after signing a six-year deal worth millions.

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns general manager Phil Savage said it is time to move forward. Quarterback Charlie Frye relished the fact the team is "undefeated." And hundreds of fans flocked to practice yesterday to cheer the team's every move.

Yes, optimism is high again on the first day of training camp. The Browns think they finally have the pieces in place to be competitive.
The pressure is on throughout the organization. It is expected to be a telling season for Savage and coach Romeo Crennel.
"We want to win," said Frye, who is competing for the starting job.

Browns have key rookies -- not Quinn -- signed

By Terry Pluto

BEREA - When the Browns opened practice Friday, Joe Thomas was there. Eric Wright was on his way. And the fans were screaming at the first sight of an orange helmet -- even if they had no idea who the player was inside.
Football season is here, and the Browns had their two most important rookies in camp for Day 1.
Sorry about that, Brady Quinn, but you could sign a contract immediately and that wouldn't change the fact that you are No. 3 on this rookie list -- behind left tackle Joe Thomas and cornerback Eric Wright.

Browns notebook

Quinn reducing any chance to start

GM says QB would have to perform significantly better than vets at camp

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA - Quarterback Brady Quinn is the Browns' only unsigned draft pick, but General Manager Phil Savage said Quinn faces quite a mountain to win the starting job anyway.
``Obviously, it's important (for him) to start as soon as possible,'' Savage said Friday. ``Every day that passes, it eliminates some of that chance (to start). I would say to begin with Brady coming into the beginning of training camp (that) he was going to have to perform at a level that was clearly better and obviously better than the level of Charlie (Frye), Derek (Anderson) and Ken Dorsey.

BEREA Charlie Frye is jazzed now that training camp has kicked off.

Aiming to hold off Derek Anderson and win the Browns? quarterback job, Frye disdained vacation when the team dispersed after June minicamp.

?I?ve spent some time working out in Arizona with (Donovan) McNabb and his guys, out there in that heat,? Frye said. ?I think I?m in good shape. I?m ready to go. Let?s just go out here and work our butts off and see what happens.?

Head Coach Romeo Crennel said Frye has ?a leg up? on Anderson, based on making 18 starts to Anderson?s three with the Crennel-era Browns.

Crennel quickly added, ?That doesn?t mean it?s not a competition.?

Winslow looks healthy

DROPS IT Cleveland tight end Kellen Winslow can?t pull in a pass on the first day of training camp Friday. The tight end, however, was a welcome sight to fans who have been wondering how Winslow would look after offseason knee surgery.

BEREA The first day of Browns training camp wasn?t much to look at.

The fan turnout bordered on amazing. The perimeter of Friday?s practice-viewing area, roped by more than 200 yards of orange twine around two fields, was pure claustrophobia.

By the time Kellen Winslow Jr. appeared in a doorway, alone and fashionably late, there was no place left for fans to sit, stand or move.

But what would you rather have if you owned the Browns? Uncomfortably crowded in miserable humidity? Or cold, dry apathy after four years of 19-45?

Edwards trying to prove he has matured Browns third-year wide receiver says he wants to lead by example this season
By George M. Thomas Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Monday, Jul 30, 2007
BEREA: Meet the new Braylon Edwards.
That's what the Browns' top draft choice of two years ago hopes that fans and his teammates will see after a sophomore season marred by some questionable behavior and inconsistent play.
Last season, folks talked more than anything else about Edwards' tardiness to meetings, an ill-advised trip by helicopter to Columbus for the Ohio State-Michigan game and a sideline fracas with Charlie Frye tailor-made for postgame highlight shows across the country.
Topping it all off, his play on the field proved to be inconsistent. He was plagued by dropped balls, even though he had 61 receptions for 884 yards (14.5 yards per catch) and six touchdowns as a wide receiver.

Edwards is still talking... but saying the right things

BEREA Shut up and put up.

So goes the short, sweet formula for turning Braylon Edwards from a sourpuss into - maybe - the Browns' brightest star.

Veterans are telling the 24-year-old wideout to cool his verbal jets and turn on the talent that made him the third pick of the 2005 draft.

"They said that to him last year,'' Head Coach Romeo Crennel said. "I think he may be listening a little more this year. That happens with maturity.''

Crennel said the $1 million donation Edwards donated to scholarships for Cleveland school kids was an encouraging sign.

Edwards admits getting discouraged by a consensus perception he acted immaturely.

Short facing long odds at linebacker with Browns
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer

BEREA --Jason Short goes full throttle in everything he does, so it was no surprise a couple days ago when Browns special teams coach Ted Daisher said Short is the toughest player he ever coached.

Daisher was the Eagles special teams quality control coach in 2004 and 2005. He remembers well plays made by Short, who played with the Eagles from 2004-06. In 2006, Short was named one of the 10 most feared players in the NFL by SI.com.

Kick returner winning praise Browns assistant says Cribbs among the best
By Patrick McManamonBeacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Tuesday, Jul 31, 2007

BEREA: There's praise and high praise, and then there's the kind of praise that Ted Dashier recently gave Joshua Cribbs.
Dashier, the Browns special teams coach, said Cribbs compares with Devin Hester as a returner.
''I think he's there,'' Daisher said of Cribbs.
''There'' is in pretty lofty company.

Winslow cheered for being on field
Browns tight end talks of '06, surgery recovery
By Marla Ridenour

BEREA: With a 4-12 season winding down in 2006, Kellen Winslow could have decided to stop playing in pain.
But that thought never crossed his mind, even though the Cleveland Browns' tight end was still feeling the effects of reconstruction of his right knee, which he injured in a May 2005 motorcycle accident.
He practiced sparingly during the season but never missed a game, finishing with 89 catches. That not only ranked ninth in the NFL, and first at his position, but also tied hall of fame tight end Ozzie Newsome's team record for most receptions in a season.

Browns receivers looking for roles
Tuesday, July 31, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
repository sports writer

As the sun rose over morning practice Monday, the 11 wideouts on the Cleveland Browns roster worked drills with the three quarterbacks whose names aren't Brady Quinn.

On three straight plays, veteran Joe Jurevicius lined up wide and jogged 5 yards at the snap. Boring for him, but on two of those plays, Tim Carter ran an end around.

"He's definitely our fastest receiver," cornerback Leigh Bodden said later. "I mean, he's real fast."

Offensive Coordinator Rob Chudzinski likes the end around, a simple handoff to a wideout circling through the backfield after the snap. Joshua Cribbs ran one after Carter's two tries.

BAXTER IS BACK Browns defensive back Gary Baxter waits to work out at training camp in Berea on Monday. Baxter, who tore patellar tendons in both knees while breaking up a pass in a game last October, defied doctor's dreary predictions and rejoined the Browns at training camp.

BEREA By now, the Gary Baxter story has been told to lengths as exhaustive as his recovery work.

An important chapter was written Monday, though, when the Browns' injury-tortured cornerback suited up for the first time since October.

"I've been building a bridge for a long time now," Baxter said. "It was time to cross it."

Baxter walked onto the field at 5:34 p.m. to applause from teammates and Browns employees and some woofs from spectators.
