Missing practice leads to demotion?

Browns coach denies that's the case with Edwards

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA - The significance of missing the first ``voluntary'' offseason Browns practice?
Wide receiver Braylon Edwards was running with the third team on Tuesday, a week after his absence was noted by the media in attendance.
Missing one practice, then, can result in a demotion to third team?
``I guess,'' quarterback Derek Anderson said with a shrug.
Anderson also said Edwards' absence was not an issue to his teammates.
``He came in, and he's been working hard, and I think guys respect you when you come in and work hard,'' Anderson said.
And Edwards' coach said there was ``no significance at all'' to the fact that Edwards was not with the starters.

McManamon on the Browns

Winslow looking good, QBs Quinn, Frye not so much

Browns' `voluntary' practice offers a bit of news

By Patrick McManamon

This and that from a Browns offseason practice... with the proviso that only so much can be gleaned from a workout that was voluntary and included no contact...
Tight end Kellen Winslow did not participate in the practice and probably won't take part until training camp. But if looks mean anything, he's doing fine in his comeback. Winslow walked out to the practice about midway through -- he was inside doing rehab -- and looked as fit as ever. He barely had a limp, wore no brace or sleeve on his knee, and when he jogged about 10 yards, he did so with no limitation. He still has to prove he can come back from microfracture surgery, but if looks mean anything, he's on track.
For what it's worth on the first day of an offseason practice, Kevin Shaffer was with the first team at left tackle, Charlie Frye at quarterback, Seth McKinney at right guard and rookie Eric Wright at cornerback. D'Qwell Jackson, who had toe surgery late last year, was back with the first unit.

Browns back Lewis say's he will be 100 percent for training camp

BEREA After five spring practices, Jamal Lewis said the surgery seems to have worked. The spurs are out of his ankle. He's ready to dig in and ride.

"I feel so much better as far as making different cuts," the Browns running back said.

Playing for Baltimore in 2006, Lewis ranked seventh in the AFC in rushing yards and touchdowns, but he was nagged by ankle problems.

At age 27, he's trying to recapture the magic of 2003, when he rushed for 2,066 yards.

Edwards' ability impresses Quinn
Wednesday, May 30, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

BEREA Browns spring practice is five sessions old. Games of guess and bluff are in midseason form.

Media spectators wondered Tuesday whether Braylon Edwards was running with the third-team offense because he missed a practice one week earlier.

"There's no significance to it at all,'' Head Coach Romeo Crennel said.

There is as much chance a healthy Edwards will not be the team's No. 1 wide receiver as there is Tim Couch being re-signed as a player-coach.

You didn't need Brady Quinn to tell you that, although the rookie quarterback as much as said so Tuesday.

Former Patriot Andruzzi expecting complete recovery

Ten-year veteran offensive guard Joe Andruzzi, released by the Cleveland Browns in early May, has been diagnosed with a treatable form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, agent Joe Linta confirmed to ESPN.com on Thursday night.

"He's upbeat, he's optimistic, and he's looking forward to his recovery and to the future," Linta said.

Andruzzi, 31, was diagnosed late last week after complaining of general irritability, swelling and a high fever. The popular lineman, Linta said, will immediately begin a 12-step round of chemotherapy treatments at the Dana Farber Institute in Boson. The facility is one to which Andruzzi and his family are longtime benefactors and for which he has raised a substantial amount of money during his career.

Said Linta in a statement later in the evening: "While this condition is very serious, both Joe and his doctors feel he will be quickly on his way to a full recovery ... He is being treated by some of the best specialists in the country, and Joe is confident he could not be in better hands. He would like to thank all his fans and friends for their outpouring of support."

According to the National Cancer Institute, about 54,000 Americans are annually diagnosed with a form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The disease may develop in any organ associated with the lymphatic system.

Browns report

Just-released Andruzzi gets cancer treatment

Team offers support, says officials were not aware of non-Hodgkins lymphoma

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

Former Browns guard Joe Andruzzi is being treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in Boston, his agent confirmed Thursday night.
``While this condition is very serious, both Joe and his doctors feel he will quickly be on his way to a full recovery,'' Joe Linta said in a statement e-mailed to reporters Thursday night.
Andruzzi, who spent two years with the Browns before being released a month ago, will undergo chemotherapy at the Dana Farber Institute.
The Browns released a statement that read: ``The Cleveland Browns are aware of Joe's situation and will continue to support him and his family in their time of need. While in Cleveland, Joe's leadership and strength were enormous both on the field and in the locker room. If anyone can fight through this, it is Joe.''

Plan to see more of Cribbs
Saturday, June 2, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Joshua Cribbs unveiled some nice surprises in his first two years as a Cleveland Brown. What's behind Door No. 3?

The kick return ace and possible punt return force looks to Dante Hall as a reflection of what is possible.

Before Hall became the NFL's best return man of this decade, he spent two years off the radar. Hall averaged 22 yards on kickoffs for the Chiefs. He was a punt returner nobody noticed.

Hall took off when he was Cribbs' age, going on 24. During his third and fourth pro seasons, Hall scored four times on punt returns and three times on kick returns. Every fantasy football player suddenly knew his name.

Cribbs has made a bigger splash through his first two years than Hall did in his, averaging 24.5 yards and scoring twice on kick returns while also starring as a special teams tackler. On balance, though, he's no Dante Hall. Yet.

NFL INSIDER
Sorry, but no beer here

Sunday, June 03, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Long-time Pittsburgh Steelers beat writers lament the days when coach Chuck Noll would let down his guard after a round of two-a-day practices at training camp, pull up a chair in the media room and talk about his squad for background. Everyone had a cold beer in his hand.
I recall reporting on Bernie Kosar's initial days in Dallas when the Cowboys signed him after he was cut by the Browns in the middle of the 1993 season. After a long day of cramming the Cowboys' offensive playbook into Kosar's brain, coach Jimmy Johnson and coordinator Norv Turner stopped into the Valley Ranch media room to share their observations. Johnson brought the beers.
Those days, of course, are long gone.

Tony Grossi's Browns news and notes from Tuesday afternoon:
GM Phil Savage said that center LeCharles Bentley has opted not to have a third surgery on his knee at this time, but will reassess in three to four weeks. Savage said he considered it a positive sign the knee is healing, but he would not speculate on Bentley's chances of playing in 2007. Bentley has been rehabbing mostly in Arizona and Savage said he has not seen or talked with Bentley since February. Savage said he did not even know if Bentley has a copy of the team's new offensive playbook.

What about the Browns?
Wednesday, June 6, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA The Cavs are in the NBA Finals. The Indians are in first place. The Browns are undefeated.

Yes, the Browns haven't played a game in 2007, but the football team is trying to catch some of the good karma coming from its basketball and baseball brothers.

"Hopefully," General Manager Phil Savage said Tuesday after a spring practice, "some of that will spill over to us."

The relationship among the teams is as strong as ever. The Browns-Indians connection was caustic as recently as the 1990s, when the baseballers were delirious about escaping a stadium controlled by then-Browns owner Art Modell.

Now?
