CLEVELAND BROWNS
New offense a challenge for Browns

Thursday, June 14, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Browns minicamp ends today, but summer school is just beginning for the offensive players trying to grasp new coordinator Rob Chudzinski's complicated scheme.
"We've come a long way, but we've got a long way to go," Chudzinski said. "They have to study film and study the playbook. They have to visualize themselves running the plays."
Chudzinski's scheme, similar to the Norv Turner-style offense that features a complex numbered-route system and plenty of shifting and motion, is so foreign that quarterback Charlie Frye will forgo the usual summer hiatus to hang around the Browns facility.

Cribbs relishes new challenge

Thursday, June 14, 2007 Tony Grossi

Plain Dealer Reporter
Josh Cribbs turns everything into a challenge.
So if someone doubts he can return punts as well as he does kickoffs, it only fuels his passion to prove he can do it.
"I've already prepared myself for the task," Cribbs said after a minicamp practice on Wednesday. "People say I can't do both, kickoff and punt returns. I love proving people wrong."
Cribbs is the leading contender to succeed Dennis Northcutt as Browns punt returner. The others are rookies Brandon McDonald, a cornerback drafted in the fifth round, and Syndric Steptoe, a receiver taken in the seventh round.

? Derek Anderson was the quarterback of the first-team offense in the final two-minute drill.

Browns seek continuity

BEREA Randy Lerner avoids interviews in times like these, when minicamp is on and football people are doing their thing.

The Browns owner shared a laugh about a topic before his team announced a contract extension for Defensive Coordinator Todd Grantham.

"You've got to love a guy," Lerner said, "who buys a house on the same street as his position coach."

It's true. Rookie quarterback Brady Quinn closed a deal in the neighborhood of Rip Scherer, an assistant head coach who is in charge of QBs.

Baxter says he'll be ready for season opener
document.title = "Baxter says he'll be ready for season opener";Friday, June 15, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA The return of the wounded could make a big difference for the Browns.

If Kellen Winslow plays faster coming off microfracture knee surgery ...

If Leigh Bodden's ankle procedure paves the way for him to be a No. 1 cornerback ...

If the Jamal Lewis of old emerges from ankle surgery ...

Among these and other ifs, not counting the nebulous LeCharles Bentley, none is as iffy as Gary Baxter.

Yet the 28-year-old cornerback showed up Thursday eschewing "if" and embracing "when."

Lewis running for the Browns now

BEREA, Ohio -- At a recent minicamp practice just outside of Cleveland, Jamal Lewis took a handoff, made one cut to his left around the guard and rambled 30 yards downfield. It was like old times with a new twist. Lewis has been running all over the Browns' defense since he entered the NFL in 2000. In 12 games spread over six seasons, Lewis turned the Browns' defense black and blue, gaining 1,524 yards with a staggering average of 5.6 yards per carry. That's almost 20 percent of his 7,801 career rushing yards. Cleveland might rock, but Lewis always has rolled when he sees a Cleveland uniform.
The new twist this season is that he's running for the Browns instead of over them. Though he had been a symbol of Baltimore's power offense, both he and the Ravens were looking for change this offseason.
"It's real odd," Lewis said of his transition. "Sometimes change is good. I needed a fresh start. I needed one last year."

DB Antonio Perkins released by the Browns today. Another wasted 4th round pick...

Looking at it from a positive perspective......cleaning up their prior mistakes and possibly more recent draft picks are making a move....

ANDERSON ON TOP

Judging by drills, quarterback has legitimate chance to become starter

By Terry Pluto

If the Browns had to open the season today, the quarterback probably would be Derek Anderson. That's the word from some with the Browns, but it's written in pencil, and keep in mind that Anderson is being judged on drills where they wear shorts and helmets and the quarterback is not being sacked. He has the strongest arm of the three candidates, and it will look the best in this type of minicamp setting.
That said, the Browns also believe Anderson showed some promise in the four games he played last season. He completed 63 percent of his passes, five for touchdowns, with eight interceptions. His stats were skewed a bit because he was terrible in his final start, completing 10-of-27 with four interceptions and a QB rating of 12.1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also suffered a separated shoulder in that game

Rob Chudzinski runs the distance to Browns

New offensive coordinator ready to tackle unit's problems with fresh energy

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA - Rob Chudzinski couldn't play, so he ran.
He turned away from the video camera he had been assigned to operate, and he ran. Back and forth, across the gravel-covered roof of the building that overlooked the University of Miami practice field.
He ran sprints and distances, and then he ran some more.
And down below, where the team practiced, nobody knew that the kid who had lugged the video equipment up a ladder with his left hand wrapped and bandaged was running.
Chudzinski had been relegated to camerawork because the too-slow, too-this, too-that kid from Toledo had mangled his left wrist and hand putting it through a plate-glass window during a summer basketball game. It was a bloody mess that left Chudzinski with severed tendons and nerves and no feeling in the fingers of his left hand.

Wright off to a strong start

Sunday, June 17, 2007

Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter

The best rookie at Browns minicamp wasn't either of the first-round picks, tackle Joe Thomas or quarterback Brady Quinn.
The one draft choice who stood out was cornerback Eric Wright, the second-round pick from Nevada-Las Vegas.
"If anybody stood above anybody, I think probably Wright's ability stood above because he does have good ability and that showed up," coach Romeo Crennel said.
Wright began the minicamp with the second-team defense and ended it sharing reps on the first unit. Some of that had to do with Leigh Bodden missing all five practices after off-season ankle surgery.
But make no mistake, Wright is off to a good start in challenging for a starting spot come September.
"I see a very intelligent player. He's very instinctual and he's aware. And he's very coachable," said secondary coach Mel Tucker Jr.

Baxter strides toward history

Friday, June 15, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Cornerback Gary Baxter, who's jogging eight months after suffering two torn patella tendons, still vows to start on opening day, Sept. 9, against the Steelers.
"That's the plan," said Baxter after the final minicamp practice Thursday. "Will it happen? Who knows? Only God and time will tell. If it happens, I'll be the happiest person in life to know that I beat one of the biggest battles of probably mankind because no one has ever done this."
Baxter, idle during minicamp, is only the second NFL player to tear two patella tendons on the same play. The first, former Bears receiver Wendell Davis, never played again.

Baxter, idle during minicamp, is only the second NFL player to tear two patella tendons on the same play. The first, former Bears receiver Wendell Davis, never played again.

Davis's injury was on the articial turf at Veteran's Stadium in Philly - probably the worst playing surface the NFL ever had. He was running a deep pass pattern and wasn't even hit by a defender.
