Team delivers some real hope on a draft day that's no fantasy

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- When coach Romeo Crennel was asked whether he felt good about what the Browns had accomplished on draft day, he was smiling but refused to join the growing giddiness.

"Me personally, I feel good when we win games," Crennel said.
What?s this, reality? Now that is something to celebrate on draft day. Although, in fairness, this did seem like a good day for the Cleveland Browns and their fans.
The NFL draft sells hope, and it?s difficult to imagine any team ever buying more hope with two picks than the Browns bought yesterday. The Browns wrote, directed and produced the most dramatic story of draft day, first passing on Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn with the third pick to take Wisconsin offensive tackle Joe Thomas, and then spending most of the afternoon trying to acquire another pick to take Quinn, who inexplicably was falling like a sacked Cleveland quarterback through the first round.

Browns pull off shocker
After passing up Quinn for Thomas, Savage trades up to land QB

Brady Quinn poses with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell while holding a Browns jersey, the team he rooted for while growing up in Dublin.

BEREA, Ohio ? Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage had his mind made up: He had no interest in taking Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn yesterday in the first round of the NFL draft.

Out of respect, Savage called Quinn?s representation Friday to let Quinn, a Dublin native, know that his childhood team would not select him. The Browns had the No. 3 overall pick and were set on drafting Wisconsin left tackle Joe Thomas.
But after taking Thomas, something strange happened that neither Quinn nor Savage anticipated.
Quinn, a projected top-10 pick, watched as team after team bypassed him as he sweated it out in front of a national television audience. The Browns were paying close attention, too. Once Quinn fell out of the top 10, things became hectic at the team?s headquarters.

So, I can just hear the Browns trying to explain to BQ's agent how they thought that an offensive lineman was more important than BQ as a draft.

BQ has got to be ticked at the Browns for this slight. And the many hours of embarrassment he endured.
Will he hold it against them?

But, bottom line, I think the Brown's problems were not a QB issue, but a offensive line and supporting cast issue(a team issue).

You think the problem with the Browns was not a QB issue? I have to disagree with you. Charlie's arm is extremely weak. He cannot make the throws that an NFL QB must be able to make. Sure the Browns have other problems besides QB but they have addressed some of those problems in this draft (Thomas and Wright) and in free agency by getting Steinbach and some DLs along with another pass rushing LB.

Quinn as a boatload of endorsement packages and is not hurting for money and Condom, Quinn's agent, said that the contract will be of no problem and I do not think it will be because Quinn does not want to get off on a bad foot with the Browns.

If you are not a fan of the Browns why do you even bother to post.

Apparently Kevin thinks he is better than he actually is. Trade the fucker.

Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns OT Kevin Shaffer will ask the team for permission to seek a trade. "I think Kevin, in our dialogue, would welcome an opportunity to go somewhere else," agent Alan Herman said Monday, April 30.

I liked the lineup that I saw with Thomas, Steinbach, placeholder, Tucker, and Shaffer. Keeping Shaffer would give the Browns some depth unless they could get a decent trade for him. How much did they regret trading Faine last year.

He's overpaid, but I'd still like to keep him for RT -- at least for another year. Him, Butler, and Sowell (who the staff seem high on) would give us some depth and options. Plus I'm betting Quinn is gonna start for at least the 2nd half of the season, and I'd feel better having Shaffer on the right side with Butler in reserve than just Butler.
But that's just me.

Whether you like the guy or not, I think anyone with a brain and a clue about the Browns injury issues KNOWS we can use Shaffer for depth this year. Next year, we'll see...but for now, unfortunately, we need the guy. UNLESS....maybe we could get the Giants 1st rounder next year in the deal somehow so we can snatch a top end RB.

Unfortunately,we didn't pay for "depth" and a first rounder for him, highly unlikely
