Safety still trying to make sense of Va. Tech massacre

Hamilton, an alumnus, took classes in the building where most of the shootings occurred.

BEREA ? He knew the landscape, but what Justin Hamilton saw didn't seem real.
The Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va., had been a virtual oasis for the second-year Cleveland Browns safety during his college days, and now the calm was being shattered. He watched the cell-phone video on TV. He heard the shots.

Crennel: Frye still QB, for now
Friday, April 20, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
repository sports writer

UNIONTOWN Romeo Crennel is sworn to secrecy regarding the draft.

The Browns head coach did shed a little light Thursday on how certain things will look depending on who isn't the No. 3 overall pick April 28.

Speaking at the Northeast Ohio Celebrity Luncheon Club benefiting Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Crennel said JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn both have "outstanding ability" and are among five college stars his Browns might grab. What if they don't pluck one of those passers?

"Right now, Charlie (Frye) has a leg up for the starting job," Crennel said. "And Derek Anderson showed us enough that we have to give him a chance. So there will be a competition in training camp, and the best man will win."

Wright may be right cornerback for Browns
Friday, April 20, 2007

UNIONTOWN The Browns can make a good case for spending a high draft pick on a cornerback.

Scouts can make a good case for UNLV's Eric Wright as a first-round talent who drops because of character issues.

Head Coach Romeo Crennel weighed in Thursday on Wright at the Northeast Ohio Celebrity Luncheon Club.

"(Wright) had some issues at Southern Cal and transferred," Crennel said. "Since he's been in Vegas, he's been an exemplary citizen. Everything's been good. We've checked on that. We're going to have to sit down and determine if his conduct these last couple years overrides the earlier conduct."

Wright, then 19, was arrested March 26, 2005, on a charge of sexually assaulting a Southern Cal student in Wright's apartment - not long after he started and had an interception in the national championship game. He was released on $100,000 bond. Charges were dropped April 21, 2005, but police said they found 136 Ecstasy pills in the apartment Wright shared with a teammate.

Living here, had a chance to see Wright play in person. Decent underachiever. Played down to bad WRs sometimes, played well versus the big man and has a knack to know where the ball is going to be thrown and be there. I say maybe a decent player at RD3, but probably can be picked up with our early RD4/5 pick. Not someone to move on unless we have multiple picks in the round.

Begins? I was thinking "end", as in "end of his career".

I say again, the Browns should select Adrian Peterson, as he comes pre-injured. That way, when he has a career ending injury in training camp, we fans will be less surprised.

Credit to Snoopy on the Dawg Pound message board for the following information. Apparently he is part of the Browns Backers and recently had a sit doen with Rip.

I do a lot more reading than I do posting here in the Watercooler, but I had some tidbits I wanted to share as we get closer to one of the most interesting drafts I can remember. My source tells me?.(sorry, I just had to say that). Anyway, in the middle of March a dozen members of our Browns Backers had the opportunity to sit down and drink a couple of beers with QB/Assistant Head Coach, Rip Scherer. He spent almost two hours with us answering questions and just talking along. Skeptics can go to the official website and look under the FANS drop down and go to the backer section. There is a picture of us with the coach in the slide show. Moving on. At one point I made a disparaging remark about Ken Dorsey and the need to replace. Coach was very quick to put me in my place. He went on to talk about the importance of finding the right third string QB. He said Ken will go weeks without taking a snap in practice and never complains. He is excellent at deciphering game film and the other two QB?s and coaches value his input. Rip readily admitted Dorsey did not possess the desirable physical skill but his attitude and input are invaluable. He cited the Atlanta game and said two of the TD plays came as a direct result of what Dorsey saw on film. My inference is that the 3rd string QB should not be looked at as a development type of position. The Browns are using it as a player/coach position only to be used in dire need. So I suppose the likes of Dorsey offer a club more than the likes of Spergon Wynn.

I made one other comment where Coach Scherer was quick to shoot me down. I questioned why the Browns would pick up the much despised Jamal Lewis. He laughed in disbelief and essentially told me to get over it. He said Jamal was more than pleased to be with the Browns and he felt he would play with a chip on his shoulder. He discussed how the Browns felt that the running game left a lot of yards on the field last season. They recognized it as one of the top areas they needed to address this off-season. More than once he stated, ?there is a reason they only signed him to a one year contract.? He may have said it three times. I wonder what he was saying? Could be more than one way to interpret it I suppose. When asked if we may see more of a two-back set, he replied that that was a strong possibility. I am/was a big Terrelle Smith fan so asked him about his release. They wanted someone who was more reliable receiving and that Terrelle had lost a step and simply was not getting the job done for them. The running game conversation made me wonder if Adrian Peterson will be our pick.
We didn?t discuss the Charlie/Derek situation much. Rip expressed, ?the third year is said to be a magic year for quarterbacks?, or something close to that. While he did not outwardly state Frye was the guy, I kind of got the impression they were going to stick with Charlie for the season to see if he would sink or swim. But I could be wrong. We did not ask much about who the first pick of the draft would be, but he did offer, ?I can tell you who Charlie and Derek want.? That was an easy one, Joe Thomas. He said Jamarcus Russell had the most outstanding work out he had seen from a QB. He hadn?t gone to see Quinn?s workout as of that time.

More tidbits:

I commented on how nice it was to have John Collins ousted rather than Phil Savage. He readily talked about how the fans were totally responsible for him staying. Also said Savage had at least three teams calling him ten minutes after word got out that he had been fired.

He expressed how much the entire organization desperately wants to win, absolutely no question about it.

I sometimes wonder how much the players care about winning. He said these guys are all about winning and want it terribly. It was good to hear. The locker room is very somber after a loss and many tears are shed.

Rip said Romeo has had a few ?pointed discussions? with Braylon Edwards recently. Look for his attitude and head to be in the right place, let?s just hope he holds onto the ball.

He loves Kellen Winslow as a person and a player. It has been his assignment many times to calm Kellen down on the sidelines. Coach laughed as he told us he always thinks he was open. When shown pictures of two guys covering him, Winslow will just say, ?I could have caught it, just throw it up.?

When LeCharles went down it was devastating to morale. I took a couple weeks to get things going again. The losses in the first two games last season also took a toll. He felt that a team on the edge like the Browns really needed to come away with a win in one of those. Lets hope we get a couple early wins this year, it could make a big difference.

He thinks having Chudzinsky come in as offensive coordinator was the best thing for the Browns. Rip had interviewed for the job but if he had been hired they would have kept much of the old offense in place. He said a new offensive scheme was a much better situation than trying to put a new spin on the old system. I got the impression that we can expect an offense with a renewed vigor. I got the impression there were no regrets that Carthon was gone.

He did state the needs of the draft were offensive and defensive line, running back, and DB. Said they had hoped to address DB in free agency, but just were not able to get it done.

We all thoroughly enjoyed the time with Coach Scherer, what an awesome opportunity! We could not believe he was so willing to take the time from his precious time off. The insights were endless. Not many fans in the NFL get treated like that.

Sorry this was long, but I hope you got something from it. I was tired of reading the same old stuff over and over again in the Cooler.
