Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

One thing to Quinn's credit is that he WANTS to be a Brown.

Even when he dropped to 22nd he still wanted to be a Brown.

If Shaffer doesn't want to play for the Browns I can't imagine them wanting him around and possibly poisoning the lockerroom.

See if you can get a trade working and if not a 1st rounder, get some other lower picks and bolster the depth and the defense.

Browns need to take their time with Quinn

So the Browns have their quarterback of the near future. Now, how do they ensure Brady Quinn doesn't end up another Tim Couch?
Couch, if you remember, broke his thumb in practice midway through the 2000 season on the helmet of a rookie linebacker who got too close to him during a passing drill.

SPORTS SPOTLIGHT
TODD PORTER

BEREA The lasting image of Tim Couch isn't one that is upright or even righteous. It is Couch (rhymes with ouch) looking like a 6-foot-4, 220-pound rag doll without the stuffing.

Couch, thanks to his Hall of Shame offensive linemen, had more than the stuffing beat out of him in four seasons.

He was emotionally absent and bereft of confidence.

The Browns just released Andruzzi...if they trade Shaffer and get rid of Andruzzi I think our O-line is back to some problems. Where is our depth going to come from?

Andruzzi has been done for awhile, his knees were shot when he got to Cleveland two years ago. They have just gotten worse since that time.

I understand that but if he is not the started at least he would be a great backup. I don't understand this at all. They needed depth we finally got some of that and now they are getting rid of it. Doesn't make much sense to me.

Browns to cut lineman Andruzzi

Posted by Mary Kay Cabot May 02, 2007 12:00PM

Browns starting left guard Joe Andruzzi will be cut today, a source close to the Browns said.
Andruzzi, who was set to make $1.5 million this season and is signed through 2008, has been the Browns starting left guard since he was signed as an unrestricted free agent from the Patriots in 2005. Andruzzi, a 10-year pro, was a favorite of coach Romeo Crennel's both on and
off the field because of his great attitude and work ethic.
Andruzzi, who battled through a knee injury last season, became expendable because the Browns signed guard Eric Steinbach and Seth McKinney in free agency. They also have second-year pro Isaac Sowells competing for a job.
Andruzzi was originally signed by the Browns to a four-year deal worth $9 million in 2005

They mention that Sowells will compete for a job but if he hasn't proved anything I'd like to see if he can beat out Andruzzi. Hell at the very least he wasn't going to make much money this year and he is a great veteran to have in the locker room with his work ethic etc.

I know it's early but anybody got any guesses as to the starting OL lineup to start the year? With all these changes I am struggling to come up with a OL depth chart.

LT Kevin Shaffer Nat Dorsey
LG
Eric Steinbach Lennie Friedman
C Hank Fraley Rob Smith
RG
Seth McKinney Joe Andruzzi
RT Ryan Tucker Kelly Butler

This is their depth chart minus Joe Thomas obviously. You put him in at LT, and if we deal Shaffer, we sill have Dorsey for depth there. Not that he is anything special. Take Andruzzi out of that equation and not sure who is a backup to McKinney. I imagine Friedman or one of those guys can move to RG if needed.

I'm not sure where the depth will come from, but Andruzzi wasn't in the starting picture this year. I'd look for Thomas, Steinbach, Fraley, Tucker, and Shaffer to be the starters with Butler, Friedman, and Sowells being the main backups. Shaffer will be able to play either tackle and Steinbach can play pretty much anywhere except for maybe center. I don't see them getting rid of Shaffer right now unless they get a good deal or think that one of the young guys is that much better.

edit: I forgot about McKinney
