Savage says no talk of no Winslow
Friday, March 23, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Kellen Winslow should be ready for training camp, Gary Baxter?s rehab is going ?extremely well? and LeCharles Bentley remains on course for season-ending surgery.

So said Browns General Manager Phil Savage, who updated the surgically repaired players? progress Thursday on the Browns? AM radio flagship, WTAM.

An Internet report as to Winslow possibly sitting out the 2007 season ? he had recent knee surgery ? got Browns fans buzzing last week.

Taking Quinn just doesn't make any sense.

Romeo needs to win NOW! A QB is not going to help in that regard.

Yes Quinn wants to be a Brown and yes Weiss and Romeo are buds. If you're the Browns do you really take another QB this year especially if the one that you really want (Russell) is gone?

I just don't believe that it's that cut and dried over Quinn.

Agreed if given the choice I think I'd go with taking a chance on David Carr than draft Quinn. Just my opinion but I am holding out hope that the browns draft CJ.

I hate ND as much as the next guy, but there's no way I'd take Carr over Quinn.

I would. Carr has more NFL experience and I believe can still be effective if put in the right situation. I think we have made decent improvements to our line and this would be a better situation for Carr and I believe he is an improvement over Frye or Anderson. Especially if we can get him for a resonable price. I just not only hate ND, I think BQ is WAY overrated and will not be anything more than a career backup in the NFL.

I was reading an article on NFL.com that says that David Carr has been sacked 249 times so far in his 5 year career. So much for more NFL experience. That's a negative if the truth be told. Fifty sacks a year...OUCH! I'm no expert on the NFL but damn that seems like an excessive amount of sacks to take. With the state of the Browns offensive line these past 8 years, he'd be smart to stay as far away from Cleveland as possible. Same goes for Brady Quinn. The Browns shouldn't invest in a QB until they prove they can protect one. If that LT from Wisconsin is available at 3 then bring him on down. That would be a giant step in the right direction!

Go Browns!!!!! Go Buckeyes!!!!!

Carr is cheap and Quinn would cost the first round pick. Too expensive IMHO. When QB is the biggest problem they can use the first round pick on one. I've said before and I'll say it again if the Browns take a QB on the first day I'll find another team.

Free-agent spending defended

Lerner says Browns have had to fill huge holes in roster with `core players' over years

By Patrick McManamon

Randy Lerner was discussing the Browns' profligate spending on free agents the other day, and he had a conclusion: It's fine.
The Browns have invested more than $70 million in the past three years in signing bonuses and guaranteed money in free agents.
``I don't think we're outside the community of NFL teams that are trying to get good and win,'' the owner said in a wide-ranging interview during the week.

No place for rookies

TALKIN' BROWNS
? If the Browns draft Brady Quinn in the first round, I'll scream. There, I said it: I'll scream. OK, maybe not scream. I'll just mumble, ``What are they doing?'' And I'll wonder, ``Hasn't anyone learned anything in the eight years since the Browns came back?''
? This is not a knock on Quinn. With the right team, given time to develop, the Notre Dame product will probably, eventually become a decent pro. But this is not the right team, because of the problems on the line. It's not like Carson Palmer's situation. He had a reliable veteran in Jon Kitna to play ahead of him for a season in Cincinnati. Besides, Quinn is not as physically gifted as Palmer. He needs protection and strong coaching.
? It happens every year, right after the season: Fans want linemen. Closer to the draft, they want quarterbacks, running backs and receivers, in that order. It's as if they know they must lose weight, eat the veggies, fish and lean protein. But then they think: ``What I really want is a $100 gift certificate from Dairy Queen. That will make me feel better.''

Browns owner Randy Lerner turns on when cameras are off
Sunday, March 25, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA There is a sense Randy Lerner will ? on an introspective level ? perpetually chase the legacy of his hero, his father, and in his mind never catch up.

On one level, though, the son has pulled even.

He has borne the title of ?Cleveland Browns owner? roughly as long as his dad did.

Al Lerner was awarded the Browns franchise on Sept. 8, 1998, and owned the team until his death on Oct. 23, 2002. Randy Lerner inherited the reins and has kept them now through four hard years.

Al Lerner came off as the down-to-earth billionaire, a subtle raconteur who could joke with peons and presidents.

Randy Lerner has been a familiar stranger, more familiar as time passes, but still allergic to cameras, always emphatic about not coming off as a meddlesome egomaniac. His aversion to publicity upholds a mysteriousness.

United under one tint

Tennessee, the Browns, Bowling Green have common bond -- struggle to look good wearing orange
Sunday, March 25, 2007 Mary Schmitt Boyer
Plain Dealer Reporter
If, as Kermit the Frog informed us, it's not easy being green, try being orange. It's even harder.
It's tough to look good in a color used primarily for traffic cones and hunting gear.
Oh, T-shirts, sweat shirts and baseball caps are fine. Browns fans prove that every Sunday in the fall. But to really pull off orange in dress clothes is no easy feat.

Browns are 'a little bit on schedule'
Monday, March 26, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Browns owner Randy Lerner covered a variety of topics during a face-to-face interview with The Repository.

Here is the second installment:

Rep: When will the team be good? What's the plan to get good?

Lerner: We operate off the belief you need approximately 35 players to be competitive - 35 NFL-ready, high-quality type players. It's reasonable to say you get about seven NFL-level football players a year if you're doing well. Three or four out of the draft. Three or four out of free agency. That would require a five-year time horizon to get it right.

Lerner looks to future
Tuesday, March 27, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Browns Owner Randy Lerner has been in charge of the team for more than four years following the death of his father. Lerner, 44, talked about his future with the team during a face-to-face interview with The Repository.

Here is the third and final installment of the interview.

Rep Do you see yourself owning the Browns for at least the next 10 years, or some synonym that would amount to "foreseeable future?" What are your family's plans in terms of owning the team?

No offense but a quarterback is going to help in every regard. If we are going to move forward as a franchise we are going to have to center our team around a great or even a really good QB. Charlie Frye has maxed out as far as his ability and if we plan to win with him which is becoming evident,we need to have a sick defense and a great rushing offense which we don't have. We need a quarterback if not now, then when?
