Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Canton

As usual, it's a QB question What's next for Browns?
Sunday, April 1, 2007
BY STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA

It's crunch time for the Browns' quarterback question - so crucial, so chronic for a crew that has kicked off the last five campaigns with a different No. 1 QB.

Here are some legitimate questions, along with answers others might see as illegitimate:

? Should the Browns bank on Charlie Frye or Derek Anderson graduating from the school of hard knocks?

Not necessarily. Both have potential, but Frye has a better shot at success than Anderson. Other options beg all the due diligence General Manager Phil Savage can offer.

? Should they pounce on JaMarcus Russell or Brady Quinn in the draft?

BROWNS BEAT: Is team making mistake by not chasing Carr?
Thursday, April 5, 2007
BROWNS BEAT
STEVE DOERSCHUK

It's fun to debate whether the Browns should make a run at David Carr.

Up front, we hear they have virtually no interest in the No. 1 overall pick of the 2002 draft.

Kinda shades the debate, but ... are they making a mistake?

One NFL man with strong knowledge of Carr tells us he's still sold on the 27-year-old QB.

"He's going to make it," the source said. "He reminds me of Steve Young, both in the way the early part of his career has gone and the kind of talent he has to break through.

"Steve Young was very athletic. A lot of people don't realize how athletic David is."

Young was 25 and three years out of college when he became a starter for Tampa Bay. He threw eight touchdown passes and 13 interceptions. The Bucs went 2-14.

Cleveland Browns keeping an eye on Massillon grad
Wednesday, April 4, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

Athletic Andy Alleman, Stark County?s top NFL draft prospect, keeps earning ?A?s? as the race for April gold hits the home stretch.

The 6-foot-4, 306-pound guard has passed running and agility tests with flying colors.

By Alleman?s calculations from cross-checking Combine and Pro Day numbers, he is the top-ranked guard in most measurable draft workout categories. One exception is strength reps, not that bench pressing 225 pounds 30 times makes him Barney Fife.

The Browns, who are in the guard market, have as much inside information on Alleman as anyone. Much comes from Frank Verducci.

Browns sign safety, set preseason games

The Cleveland Browns added a safety and announced their preseason schedule on Monday.
Free agent safety Mike Adams, who started eight games last season for San Francisco, joined the Browns. The former standout at the University of Delaware signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2004.

Thomas gets high marks from coach

Ex-Browns assistant says lineman has right stuff for success in the NFL

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

Bob Palcic spent the 1999 season with the Browns trying to right the wrongs on a struggling offensive line.
He spent last year with the athletic left tackle who might finally help accomplish that.
Now offensive line coach at the University of Wisconsin, Palcic has worked for 12 years in the NFL and 22 more as a college assistant. He tutored Tony Boselli at USC and Jonathan Ogden at UCLA. Now, Palcic has nothing but glowing praise for Joe Thomas, a three-year starter for the Badgers.

Browns report

Brady Quinn spotted in Berea

By Tom Withers

Associated Press

BEREA - Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn dressed in a light orange shirt for his visit to the Browns. If he gets his wish, he'll soon have a matching orange helmet.
Quinn, who grew up in Dublin, Ohio, has said he wants to play for the Browns, the team he rooted for as a kid. On Thursday, he spent a few hours touring the team's headquarters and interviewing with coaches.
He arrived in Cleveland on Wednesday night and was taken to dinner by team officials.
The Browns have the No. 3 pick in this month's NFL Draft, and they could use it to select Quinn, regarded as the second-best quarterback prospect behind LSU's JaMarcus Russell.

Savage: No hurry with Green talks
Friday, April 6, 2007
By STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA It may not be known until April 28 if the Browns have gone Green.

"It actually could play out all the way up until draft day," General Manager Phil Savage said of a possible trade for Chiefs quarterback Trent Green.

Speaking Thursday on the Browns' AM radio flagship, WTAM, Savage said his interest in Green spiked when he learned Miami - reportedly a team Green likes - hadn't made a hard trade offer.

Savage won't give up the farm for Green, who turns 37 on July 9 and is coming off a season marred by a concussion. On the flip side, Green went to a Pro Bowl after passing for a Chiefs franchise record 4,591 yards in 2004. He also surpassed 4,000 yards in 2003 and 2005.

Imagine these Brownies after mixing in picks
Sunday, April 8, 2007
BY STEVE DOERSCHUK

Three weeks out from the draft, debate swirls as to what the Browns need. The intelligent arguments, perhaps, are tied to what they have. Coming off free agency, with trade talks in the air, here's a categorized view of the Browns' strengths and weaknesses.

a HAS-BEEN SUPERMAN

There is no chance the running game can be more bland than in 2006. There is concern it won't be much better.

New No. 1 back Jamal Lewis ran well against certain teams in 2006. Take Cleveland. Lewis ran 195 yards at 4.53 per carry in two games against the Browns. He averaged 3.46 per carry against everybody else. Reuben Droughns, who didn't get to run against Cleveland, averaged 3.44 yards.

Jurevicius supports NFL policy

Wednesday, April 11, 2007 Tony Grossi

Plain Dealer Reporter
Browns receiver Joe Jurevicius applauds the NFL's crackdown on player misconduct by new Commissioner Roger Goodell.
"I'm for it. I think we all need to be held accountable," Jurevicius said on Tuesday. "I just think for the amount of money [we're paid], for the privilege to play in the NFL, we should be professionals. We should really be appreciative of what the league has given us and not take advantage of it.
"Ultimately, we're role models. We're heroes to a lot of kids."

It is hard to make an accurate guess so early in the year but I can realistically see an 8 or 9 win season as long as things go well this season. GO BROWNIES!!!! WOOF! WOOF!

8 or 9 might be stretching it a bit....

I'm thinking 4 or 5 and I wonder if I'm being optimistic....
Hey now come on. We can turn things around. I see Oakland, Miami, Rams, texans, cardinals, jets, and 49ers as all possible wins. Pittsburg is rebuilding and the ravens are getting older by the second so we could split the series with those teams. I don't think my guess is too far fetched. :)

Until the Browns actually beat Pittsburgh I can't pick it that way I'm sorry to say....

The Ravens still have that defense and it hasn't changed...

The only wins out of those you listed that I see (while all are possible) are Oakland, Houston and the Cardinals. Miami could go either way (remember they had injury issues and probably would be a lot better than they were) and the Jets made the playoffs. the 49ers should be better and so should the Rams.

Just how I see it.

That's fair. There are plenty of Browns fans who feel the same way you do. But you all will feel silly with low expectations when we go to the superbowl this year! :groove:J/K but hopefull.

I'll go for noticable improvement this year. I'd like to see the Browns get a functioning offensive line. Screw that, I want to see the Browns get through a season without a Free Agent or draft pick getting injured (and the required Staph infection)....

I hope I'm wrong though.

Of course this could all be a moot point if they draft Quinn.....
