Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Charlie Frye has maxed out as far as his ability and if we plan to win with him which is becoming evident,we need to have a sick defense and a great rushing offense which we don't have. We need a quarterback if not now, then when?
Can you definatively say Charlie has maxed out his ability? Really? We haven't even seen him behind an NFL line yet. All we've seen is a young QB who has made mistakes because he spent 75% of the time running for his life. We have bigger needs than a QB right now IMO. I personally don't see how we could pass up a player like AP when he's available. I know we signed Lewis, but he's a transistion back that is not a long term answer. Passing on Peterson would have me thinking of 2001 all over again. The only way we should is if we get an attractive offer to trade down and stockpile some additional picks to plug any of the many other holes on this mess.

I think it's pretty difficult to assume that a 2nd year QB, with essentially one year of starts under his belt, is going to either be a success or a bust. Give the kid a break. It's not like he's in his sixth or seventh year, and he's made no progress.

Good Post IB, I dont see how anyone can guarentee that taking BQ or JR would change anything. Who's to say they just arent hype that may take 5 years to develop too? No draft pick is a guarentee, especially at QB. For every P manning, there are 2-3 ryan leaf's

The Browns have reportedly joined the race to acquire Trent Green.

The Dolphins' pursuit of Kansas City quarterback Trent Green - now in its third week - could continue until the NFL Draft April 28-29, Chiefs General Manager Carl Peterson said today.

Peterson said he and Dolphins General Manager Randy Mueller didn't have a chance to talk at the NFL's annual meetings, which concluded today.

They will resume talks, Peterson said, when Mueller returns in a few days from a West Coast trip to scout college players.

"Until there's a deadline to get something done, it's difficult," Peterson said. "It could come right down to the night before the draft."

Kansas City wants a second-round pick for Green, a two-time Pro Bowler coming off an injury-plagued season. Miami is offering a late-round pick, Peterson said.

Meanwhile, the interest in Green, 36, has increased in the past week, with Detroit and Cleveland joining Miami in the mix....

My biggest knock against CF is that he holds on to the ball too long, and doesn't make his reads quick enough. If he improves on that and we improve our line, he could definitely be more productive. That being said though, I still would love to see them draft Troy in the 3rd Round.

That's been my criticism too. That is something that can be worked on though. I don't know if Chud and Scherer are the guys that can help him fix that, or even if Charlie could fix it with the best QB coach in the world. I do know that Charlie wants to be in Cleveland and is a "Cleveland guy" just as much as Troy is. If Troy is available in the third round, then I would love to see him go to Cleveland. I would also love to see Trent Green come to Cleveland. Having a veteran QB that isn't a system quarterback in the wrong system, could really help all of our young guys see how it's supposed to be done.

More about the Browns possibly going after Trent Green
Browns check with Chiefs about Trent Green

3/29/2007, 11:03 p.m. EDT By TOM WITHERS
The Associated Press
CLEVELAND (AP) ? The Cleveland Browns seem to be beating the bushes for a veteran quarterback after all.
General manager Phil Savage confirmed Thursday night that he contacted Kansas City GM Carl Peterson about quarterback Trent Green, a two-time Pro Bowler, during this week's NFL meetings in Phoenix.
"I spoke to a number of teams/GMs about players/picks including KC," Savage said in an e-mail. "Bottom line, due diligence on a player who might be able to help us ? nothing imminent or on the table." Savage reiterated that he "did the same thing" with other teams. However, the fact that he would even approach another team about a proven QB is an interesting development for the Browns, who own the No. 3 overall pick in next month's draft.

Savage had said previously that the team would be willing to go into training camp next summer without a veteran and allow Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson to compete for the starting job.
There's also the possibility the Browns could wind up taking either LSU's JaMarcus Russell or Notre Dame's Brady Quinn if things fell into place in the first round.
On Wednesday, Peterson told the Kansas City Star that Savage approached him at the conclusion of the meetings about Green, whom the Chiefs are looking to trade if they can't restructure his contract.
"We agreed to talk some more later this week or the first of next week," Peterson told the newspaper. "He said he wants to talk some more with his head coach and his offensive coordinator.
"But he did ask whether this thing was over with. I said, 'No, not at all.' Cleveland would make sense to me because Trent played very well against them last year."
Green, who last season missed eight games after sustaining a severe concussion on a hard hit in the season opener, threw a season-high four touchdown passes in a loss at Cleveland on Dec. 3.
Miami and Detroit are also reportedly interested in Green, who is signed through 2009. He is slated to make $7.2 million next season, and $7.7 million and $9.2 million in the final two years of his contract.
Green struggled after returning from his concussion, throwing seven touchdowns and nine interceptions as Kansas City went 2-3 in its final five games. Green's 74.1 passer rating was his lowest since 2001 ? his first year with the Chiefs.
Damon Huard, who filled in when Green was sidelined last season, recently signed a three-year deal with the Chiefs. Kansas City also has Brodie Croyle, last year's third-round draft pick.

Absolutely, great post. I just want them to do whatever they can to be competitive. I don't want to have to turn off any of their games at halftime because it is so painful to watch. I think they have made some positive moves this off season to address the O-Line. Let's just hope they make it through training camp without injury or a staph infection. LeChuck would have been a huge upgrade for us last year, and his loss was substantial and will no doubt be felt again this year, but this team has to improve. I can't go through another rebuild of coaching staff, upper management and players.

New D lineman shows he can be a real character
Friday, March 30, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA It remains to be seen whether Cleveland's new nose tackle can be quite the player.

It became evident Thursday that Shaun Smith is quite the personality.

The Bengal-turned-Brown laughed about getting even with former teammate Chad Johnson, who once sent Pepto Bismol to Cleveland cornerbacks he vowed he would make ill.

Smith was playful about trying to make ends meet on his new four-year, $8 million contract.

Browns set up visits with top prospects

Friday, March 30, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot

Plain Dealer Reporter
LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn and Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson will visit the Browns next week, sources said.
Peterson will visit on Wednesday and Quinn will be in on Thursday. Russell will most likely visit on another day. They're three of the four players the Browns are seriously considering with the No. 3 overall pick in the April 28 NFL draft, including Wisconsin tackle Joe Thomas.
As of Thursday night, the Browns had not yet scheduled a visit with Thomas. "But they know his game is as clean as anyone's in the country," said his agent, Peter Schaffer. "They don't necessarily need to bring him in, and I don't think they think he'll be there at No. 3."

Browns may go Green

Savage inquires about veteran QB

Friday, March 30, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot

Plain Dealer Reporter
Apparently the Browns haven't ruled out acquiring a veteran quarterback.
Browns General Manager Phil Savage confirmed Thursday that he spoke to Chiefs General Manager Carl Peterson at the NFL owners meetings Wednesday about trading for 15th-year quarterback Trent Green, 36.
In an e-mail response, Savage said the Browns' inquiry was "due diligence to check on a player who might be able to help us. Nothing imminent at this time."

Scheme is dream for Browns' Peek
Saturday, March 31, 2007
By STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA Maybe it's the sense he conveys with his atomic-grip handshake. Maybe it's the sound of spring thunder in his refreshed voice.

This much is clear: New Browns linebacker Antwan Peek sounds ready to bring it - the way he did when he sacked Wisconsin quarterback Brooks Bollinger three times in his third game as a Cincinnati Bearcat.

"Antwan is faster than all get-out," then-Cincinnati Coach Rick Minter said at the time. "He's faster than anybody on our defense except for our cornerbacks

New Browns nose tackle is happy to add leadership

Saturday, March 31, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
If any young Browns defensive tackle can withstand big Ted Washington's icy glare and maybe siphon a few reps off him, newly acquired Shaun Smith probably can.
Smith, signed as a restricted free agent from Cincinnati, showed up for his introductory news conference Thursday with a Washington-like swagger and edge.
For those who have never experienced the 6-5, 365-pound Washington up close and personal, he's scolded younger teammates for playing video games in the locker room, scowled at reporters and growled at kids - before ruffling their hair and laughing.
