Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

This is the way I foresee the draft shaping up.

Both Romeo and Savage MUST win this year or one or both are gone.

They are not going to be looking out for the long term interests of the team by drafting Quinn. They're going to draft someone that will help them NOW.

I would have to say that would mean AP.

Romeo gone? yes. Savage? Not a chance.

Browns sign Bengals DT Smith to offer sheet

The Browns today signed defensive tackle Shaun Smith, a restricted free agent of the Cincinnati Bengals, to an offer sheet, according to a league source. The Bengals have seven days to match the offer. Terms have not been disclosed.
Smith entered the NFL in 2003 as an undrafted free agent from South Carolina, so there would be no draft-pick compensation to the Bengals if they elect not to match the offer.
Smith, 6-2 and 325 pounds, was with Dallas and New Orleans before joining Cincinnati off waivers during the 2004 season.

I still don't think that eliminates Thomas as being the pick. He could step right in and start in 07 as well.

McCutcheon is let go by Browns

Member of expansion team lauds fans' loyalty

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

The Browns cut one of their expansion originals Friday, and he said it was time.
``I've got a lot of respect for (coach) Romeo Crennel,'' cornerback Daylon McCutcheon said by phone from his home in California. ``We talked (Friday) morning and had a real good conversation. He knew I wasn't happy there, and he felt like this was a good move for both of us.''
McCutcheon did not disagree -- as much as he liked Cleveland and its fans.
``Competing in that city for that team with those fans,'' he said. ``I haven't played for another team, but guys who moved on still talk about the loyalty there and how exciting it is to play there. It's something I'll never forget.''

Browns receive receiver in trade for Droughns

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

The expected Reuben Droughns trade went through Friday.
Droughns, the only Browns running back in 21 years to top 1,000 yards, was sent to the New York Giants for Tim Carter, a speedy but injury-prone receiver.
In addition, the Browns signed defensive tackle Shaun Smith to an offer sheet for a four-year deal and released cornerback Daylon McCutcheon, one of the last two original expansion Browns. Safety Brian Russell, a free agent, agreed to terms with the Seattle Seahawks.

I kind of liked Russell, that's a bummer. McCutcheon was well past his prime.

Me too, but at least he went to my #2 team which needs a lot of help at Safety.
Savage is putting up so many smokescreens I think it's nearly impossible to tell what he's really up to. The draft should be interesting. Too bad it's a month from now.

Can't beat them? Sign their players.
A week after signing left guard Eric Steinbach to a $49.5 million, seven-year contract, the Cleveland Browns have their sights set on two other Bengals free agents.
The Browns confirmed Friday that they have signed Bengals restricted free agent defensive tackle Shaun Smith to an offer sheet. Terms were not disclosed.

Lewis slightly better than Droughns
Sunday, March 11, 2007
SUNDAY SPECIAL
TODD PORTER

At the end of the day, Jamal Lewis is a slight upgrade from Reuben Droughns with more potential to be an impact player in 2007. That is what the Browns got this week when they signed Lewis to a free-agent contract, then traded Droughns to the Giants for receiver Tim Carter.

Droughns got a fat contract extension from Cleveland before last season but never lived up to his 1,200-yard season of 2005. Lewis got cut by Baltimore, then signed a one-year deal with Cleveland that is nearly identical to Droughns' 2007 salary cap figure. Lewis is playing for 2008, and guys playing for the next contract tend to make an impact.
