Defense is lone bright spot
Monday, January 1, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk repository sports wRITER

HOUSTON Two good things might have come of the Browns' loss in Sunday's Expansion Bowl.

Losing to the Texans guaranteed them the third or fourth pick in the draft. Some pretty promising and productive players have come from there, in addition to some suspects (see chart).

Sore Winslow already looking forward to '07
Monday, January 1, 2007
By Todd Porter REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

HOUSTON If Kellen Winslow Jr. could play one more game this year, he would. The Browns are out of games, and it might be to Winslow's benefit. His body probably couldn't take much more.
Winslow played 16 games this season at less than 100 percent. He started the season nursing a right knee that was mangled in a motorcycle accident, and he ended it by tying a Browns franchise record.

Monday, January 1, 2007
By Todd Porter REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

HOUSTON Browns General Manager Phil Savage is expected to meet with Randy Lerner in the coming week, according to a report by Sports Illustrated writer Peter King on HBO's "Inside the NFL."
One of the topics to be discussed is Head Coach Romeo Crennel's future with the Browns. Crennel ended his second season Sunday with a 14-6 loss to the six-win Texans. Crennel is 10-22 in two seasons and was two games worse this season than a year ago when Cleveland won six games.

Toasted for New Year

Season ends way it started, with ugly loss
Monday, January 01, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Houston- Happy New Year, Browns fans.
Maybe this one will be different because of the way the last one ended.
For the first time in five years, the Browns concluded their season with a loss. None of the previous victories carried over into the next season. Perhaps more positive change will come from defeat this time.

Browns must resolve to score

Monday, January 01, 2007 Bud Shaw

Houston
- Turns out we owe corner- back Daven Holly an apology.
His dance last week, the one that served as another disconnect between the city's memory of big moments and a bad team's inept attempts at re-creating them? Seems Holly did give people a milestone moment after all. Sunday clinched his place as the last Browns player to step in an end zone in 2006 - if not his spot on "Dancing with the Stars."

BROWNS INSIDER
Hobbling Winslow ties team mark

Monday, January 01, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Houston- Tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. tied Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome's team record of 89 catches in a season - and did it on a gimpy knee that will require more surgery in the off-season.
"[Newsome] was a great player, so it's a great honor for me to be compared to him," Winslow said. "But I'm just happy to get through a season as healthy as possible and I'm looking forward to next year."

Frye just aching to start finale

Monday, January 01, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Houston- Charlie Frye played it off all week like there was no way he could play.
On Friday, he threw some short lob passes and told reporters Ken Dorsey was the starter. On Saturday, he rubbed his bruised wrist in television production meetings and told the crew how much it hurt.

Crennel expects to be coach in 2007
Tuesday, January 2, 2007
By STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA Romeo Crennel kept talking about ?the next two weeks.?
Never did he suggest he is turning in ? or being served ? a two-weeks? notice that would lead to his being replaced as Browns head coach. Crennel said he has ?no reason? to think he won?t return for a third season, despite a 4-12 finish.

Season's meetings await Browns, Crennel

Evaluations start over on how to rebuild losing situation
Tuesday, January 02, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Two NFL owners acted swiftly in releasing head coaches on Monday, but the Browns will proceed deliberately in evaluating how they correct their losing culture.
Romeo Crennel will make the case to owner Randy Lerner in upcoming organizational meetings that the Browns are making progress despite a drop-off in wins from six to four in his second season as coach.

Season haunting, future daunting

For Browns, offseason begins with questions about team's direction

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA - Joe Jurevicius stood at his locker Monday and stated what most everyone was thinking about the 2006 Browns.
``I'm glad the season's over,'' he said.
This is what happens when a team goes 4-12 and endures more turmoil than the average team. Even veteran leaders grow weary. On consecutive days, Willie McGinest and Jurevicius spoke of the wearying toll of losing, and losing badly.
