Thursday, December 28, 2006
By Steve Doerschuk repository sports writer
BEREA As July expired, Hank Fraley wasn't even a tiny blip on the Browns' radar screen.
As January nears, he's 310 pounds of iron-man stability in a season that has blown up like an asteroid in a Bruce Willis movie. Having started all 15 games at center, Fraley is part of a burning two-part question.

BROWNS REPORT
Wimbley factor
Chaun Thompson played outside linebacker last year, but was moved inside because the Browns drafted Kamerion Wimbley and signed Willie McGinest. Wimbley has enjoyed the brightest year of any Browns first-round pick in the expansion era. He ranks 14th in the NFL with 10 sacks. Chicago's Mark Anderson is the only rookie with more.

Fans are used to this one. It's the game where the team has a losing record and stumbles into the finale yet somehow pulls off a win.
The team then talks about how uplifting the win was, and how it would carry into the next season. The old ``springboard'' theory.
Except these games never were a springboard. Unless it was to nowhere.

He's the Browns' No. 1 draft choice with humility.
The one who cares about doing the right thing all the time. The unselfish one who changed positions and doesn't complain about how he is used.
The one who said he would not hold out and was true to his word. The one who is loud on the field and quiet off it.

BEREA - When Dennis Northcutt drops back to return punts Sunday, it probably will be his last game with the Browns.
Northcutt probably won't return next season, and he speaks like a player who expects that to be the case. He has walked this road before, however -- after the 2003 season he had the option to pursue free agency -- and eventually he returned to the Browns.
