Also - feeling pretty good about my Wake Forest pick. Georgia Tech would be up there too if not for the recruitment of Dennis Scott and Stephon Marbury in basketball.

The criteria was:

  1. No history of "lawlessness"- Students will be students, but the athletic program shouldn't be a regular player in the Fulmer Cup.
Describe a 'regular player'? We were in the top 10 one year due to one player who was a knucklehead, but not since then.

Great question, and this is where subjective comes in. Since this is about perspective (we can find stuff about Harvard if we ask Yale fans), perhaps it's the perspective of outsiders? When people think about your program, what comes to mind... and does that include legal problems.

For instance, PSU is pretty clean except for all of the minor arrests and stuff that they always seem to have. And that's how some people remember them, so it impacts this "survey".

Plus, you know Huskers are getting discounts at Runza Hut... you haven't be caught because your on-campus compliance office gets the same deal. :biggrin:

To me, the bigger strike against Nebraska is that they've had basically no meaningful success at all in their second money sport. There are a lot of programs that are consistently good-to-very-good in one money sport. There are only a few that are consistently so in both, or at least have some tradition of success in both money sports.

"I appreciate the efforts of Mike and his coaching staff, but I have made the decision to change the direction of our program," Osborne said in the statement released by NU officials.

So much for supposed favoritism.

Pitching coach Eric Newman, whose young group was the strength of the 2011 team, said the entire staff was fired during a meeting in Osborne?s office around noon Sunday.

"He (Osborne) was very sympathetic," Newman said. "At one point, he got kind of emotional."

I was defining the "money sports" as football and men's basketball. Success in baseball is great, and I personally would place it as being at least equal to women's basketball (in contrast to the original criteria laid out in the question), but it's certainly second-tier after football and men's basketball. So if Nebraska is going to get into the club of programs who are successful in the two money sports, they at least need to start making the NCAA men's basketball tourney semi-consistently.

Well, if you're talking success in only one major sport (and the original question said at least one major sport), then we should be able to add Butler and Gonzaga to the list.

If you're looking for occasional moderate success, then I'd put any of the service academies and Northwestern on the list...but that wasn't the original question, so I can't add them in good faith.
