Cincinnati Bengals (Same Ole Bengals)

Bengals' Joe Burrow sets mark with 5th 400-yard game in 3 years

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow collected another record Sunday in his team's 35-17 win against the Atlanta Falcons.

Burrow became the first player in NFL history to have five games of 400 or more passing yards in the first three years of his career, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

Burrow previously held the record with Dan Marino, a Pro Football Hall of Famer.

Another 2nd half without allowing a TD. That’s impressive against anyone (except Iowa?).

Other than gifting those 10 points at the end of the 2nd quarter, that is about as impressive of a performance you can expect!

That game was truly enjoyable to watch, getting a stress free win at home with lots of offensive fireworks to get back to a winning record? Yes please. I know the Falcons aren't world beaters but anything can happen in the NFL and nothing usually comes easy (also note that the Falcons just came off of soundly beating SF the week before). Really nice win and hopefully that puts them in the mindset that they can go perform like that every week.

Now the next game in Cleveland is going to be a tough one, particularly slowing down their interior run game...having no Reader or Wilson in the middle to stop Chubb makes me nervous. The backups at DT and LB played very well in their stead (AKD, Carter and Tufele in particular), but Cleveland's run game is light years better than ATL. Really an important one to win though, don't want to fall to 0-3 in the division.

Rewatched the game against Atlanta and here are my thoughts:

1. The OL is improved, but not by as much as we thought it would at this point. Burrow is under clear directive to throw the ball in under 3 seconds on almost every play, which is the instructions he should be getting...his QBR is off the charts when he does that and I think even if the OL was a fortress, that is generally what we want to see.

2. Ran the ball quite a bit better and I hope to see that continue...this offense needs Mixon running strong to really excel.

3. Really hope Wilson and Reader are ready to go after the bye...defense really filled in admirably for them but we need both of those guys down the stretch to make a run. I am concerned on how we hold up against Cleveland in run defense.

4. Burrow is back and so is our offensive play calls perhaps. He is letting the ball rip and just putting it in a spot where Chase/Higgins/Boyd can just make a play...we have the best WRs in the League, so really it was a breath of fresh air to see us allow Joe to just push the ball downfield. I think we were all pulling our hair out for not doing this before the last game.

5. Might need to sub in Taylor-Britt or Hill for Apple, or at least split time...I hate to say it, but the dude is getting torched every week and that late season performance is growing into a distant memory. He is the clear and maybe sole liability on the defense, so at least getting the young guys in may change up opposing offenses strategy in the pass game...and we need to see if the two first picks of our draft can develop into long-term players.

Overall this looked like last year's team at its prime. Atlanta is not a great team but we beat them like a championship contender team should and we haven't seen that all year, very encouraging. On to Cleveland, this would be huge to go to 5-3 and pretty much ensure Cleveland is out of the AFC North race if they drop to 2-6.

At this point, I’m just watching for fantasy reasons. I’ve got Chubb and Cooper against Burrow and Mixon. I swear to god, if these guys score a meaningless TD and it costs me a win, I’m going to be pissed.

Haha I had Chubb and Cooper, and my opponent had nobody... but also McPherson, who got me -4 points. I was down by a lot but the last Chubb TD won my game ...silver linings?

Despite all the "progress" this organization has made, the ring of honor, the new uniforms, the indoor practice facility even the drafting of Joe Burrow, they remain the same fragile team they've been since their inception.

An important player gets injured. Do they redouble their effort and play harder? No, they crawl into a shell and hide. An important game against a divisional foe in prime time. Do they come out fired up and ready to kick ass and take names? No, they come out and stumble and bumble all over the field and look like a deer in the headlights.

When Marvin Lewis was coaching you could always count on at least twice a season the Bungles would show up (usually against an inferior team with a losing record) and look like a Chinese fire drill. Opposing players running free down field. Running backs that averaged 1.5 yards a carry suddenly having a 135 yard game and some perennial back up QB having a career day.

I hoped those days were gone with Lewis and his silly seasonal sayings (remember Just Keep Digging...?). But no, it's not a Marvin or a Mike Brown thing. It's a Bengal thing....period.

I honestly doubt they'll ever change. Ever.
