Cincinnati Bearcats (Juggalos official thread of Faygo)

Seriously? I've lived in those two places my entire, life, save the four years I spent in Columbus. I don't agree 100% with what you're saying about Cincinnati, but I understand where you're coming from. I have no idea where the Dayton part comes from. That sounds absurd.

I agree. Dayton has always been strong Buckeye country. Additionally, the Dayton Daily News' editorial page is a very strong supporter of Ohio State's interests.

I've lived in every part of this state for school, work, family, etc.. (even Toledo when I was a young child). Based on that experience, I can tell you that there is a dramatic difference between the mentality towards Ohio State in Central/NE Ohio than there is in SW Ohio.

For example, at a Browns game, if they play Hang on Sloopy, a strong majority of that crowd is into it, doing the O-H-I-O. When I went to a Reds' game this year, they played it and you could hear birds chirping. Just a different mentality.

Don't throw Dayton into that mess. Dayton is solid OSU country. That's why I was so amazed when I moved to Cincinnati. That 45 miles makes one hell of a difference.

As I've said ad nauseum, Cincinnati does not see itself as a part of Ohio. It's the capital of Tri-State.

What did I make up? The second best winning percentage among PAC 10 teams, for the last 50 years is UCLA. That's not something I pulled out of my ass. it means that for many of the last 50 years the USC - UCLA game determines which team goes to the Rose Bowl.

...

So why 50 years? Because one decade does not make a program....

But two decades of mediocrity can be its undoing. In the case of UCLA, two decades of irrelevance invalidates the argument you make about their importance--just like two decades of mediocrity have mitigated against the inclusion of Notre Dame in top programs.

And three years of Dantonio inspired plenty, do not make Cincy a cornucopia of college football good times in future years. Charlie is likely to find that this is his last year at Notre Dame, if they finish outside the top 5 and don't get into a BCS bowl. It is hard to believe that Cincy won't be looking for a new coach if Chuckie rolls on out to "pursue other meals".

Maybe they will get another good coach. Maybe they will build a new stadium and competitive facilities. Maybe this move to the Big East will take them to a new level. Or maybe they are the current Kansas State in a hot streak year. None of us know the future but my feeling is that this will not last along the Ohio River.

A good deal of what happens on the Ohio probably depends on what happens in Paul Brown Stadium. If the Bengals continue to be the Bengals then football fans (distinguished from UC or Bengal fans) may begin to fill Nippert. If the Bengals play like they have the first five weeks of this season the bearcats will find the NFL too tough to allow them to make any money and thus become a consistent top 50 - 60 program.

It's irritating listening to the USF-UC broadcasters try to castigate OSU for not playing UC this year. They act like OSU is dodging UC....
And when UC is back to being a 4-8 team in a few years, the talking heads will be castigating Ohio State for scheduling an in-state cupcake....

Can't win, so don't bother listening to those clowns.

FWIW ...

PAC-10 conference win %
99-08:

USC 74.7
Oregon 66.3
Oregon St. 59.0
Cal 49.4
Arizona St. 48.2
UCLA 48.2

89-08:
USC 68.8
Oregon 58.6
Washington 55.5
UCLA 53.7

If you go back to 79 UCLA is tied for second with Washington at 59.6 (USC at 71.1).

And Dayton... Dayton is Ohio State all the way. I won't even agree to disagree on that one.

I have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to Dayton. Dayton is very much an all Buckeye town. Cincinnati is and always will be a little different when it comes to college sports. There is as big a UK influence there as UC or OSU.

I lived in Warren county for a couple decades, and it's a bizarre mix. We were on the very northern edge, and there are a lot of OSU fans there - but there are also a lot of UK fans (mostly basketball). You get more UC fans as you go south, but it's a pretty even mix. UC definitely doesn't dominate the hearts and minds of the hoi paloi. There's a pretty even gradient from Dayton all the way down to Mason, beyond which it's pretty heavily UC fans (and fair weather OSU fans). It's about what you'd expect, given the geography. Anyway, Dayton is an OSU town for the most part.

Actually I'd say that UC fans in Cinci are far behind OSU, ND & Moeller/St X/Colerain in football and are split with Xavier & UK fans in B'Ball.

Until recently finding a UC football fan was about as common as finding a Nebraska fan in Norman, OK.

I don't necessarily disagree with most of what you say (This is still a UC basketball city and XU fan knows that). UC and Cincinnati are in the center of a 100 mile radius of OSU, UK, UofL, IU and Purdue...Not to mention UC and XU right here at home...

My point was to show how stupid it is to be 'shocked', 'amazed' or even pissed that Cincinnati is not 100% OSU territory. This would be like going to Baltimore and being pissed that there aren't a shit tone of Yankee fans in the city. It is just ignorant to feel that way...and, for the record, the last time I was in Toledo I counted more scUM shirts on a 2-1 ratio to OSU shirts. Why do I never hear anybody bitch about that on here? No, its always Cincinnati. Sorry, It gets real old.

There have been numerous posts on BP about Toledo being split between tOSU and TSUN fans. Being from Toledo, I know it's true and I've certainly noticed many posts on BP that have talked about it.

And since Baltimore is in Maryland, not New York state, I think that comparison is apples and oranges.

Maybe Yankee fans complaining that there are Mets fans in Queens is a better comparison.

As a fan of football in general I'll say flat out that I was always shocked when I ran across a UC football fan when I lived in Cincy because from all accounts they were nonexistent.

In fairness, it's hard to find USFL fans anywhere. I blame Donald Trump.
